RECOMMENDATIONS:

A. That the City Council designate the uunumbered location situated one sidewalk square southerly of and between numbered locations 36g and 360 as shown on Sheet 16 of Plan D-13788 for the Hollywood Walk of Fame for the installation of the name of Mel Brooks at 6712 Hollywood Boulevard.

B. Inform the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce of the Council's action on this matter.

C. That this report be adopted prior to the date of the ceremony on April23, 2010.

FISCAL IMPACT STATEMENT:

No General Fund Impact. All cost paid by permittee.

DISCUSSION:

The Walk of Fame Committee of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has submitted a request for insertion into the Hollywood Walk of Fame the name of Mel Brooks. The ceremony is scheduled for Friday, April23, 2010 at 11:30 a.m.

The communicant's request is in accordance with City Council action of October 18, 1978, under Council File No. 78-3949. Following the Council's action of approval, and upon proper application and payment of the required fee, an installation permit can be secured at 201 N. Figueroa Street, 3rd Floor, Counter 23".

The Walk of Fame Committee of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has approved the below listed name for insertion into the Hollywood Walk of Fame:

MEL BROOKS -(category-MOTION P!CT!JRES) Requested star location to be 6712 Hollywood Boulevard in front of the Egyptian Theatre on the South side of the street. The star for MEL BROOKS will be placed in the second row next to the original row closest to the property, between the stars of CAMERON DIAZ and JAMES CAMERON which have no numbers. The stars situated in the original row where star is near are DIANA ROSS (36g) to the east and MACK SENNETT(SGG) to the west. According to sheet #16 plan 13788, MEL BROOKS' star has no designated number. The dedication ceremony is scheduled for Friday, April 23~ 2010 at 11:30 a.m.

Mel Brooks Bio

Director, producer, writer and actor, Mel Brooks is the creative force behind the 2001 smash hit Broadway musical -winner of a record-breaking 12 ®. Three of those (Best Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Musical), along with two Grammy Awards® (Best Musical Show Album and Best Long-Form Music Video), went to Brooks himself. He recently followed it up with the successful Broadway production of , which won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical.

Brooks began his distinguished career during television's Golden Age as a writer for on Your Show ofShows in 1951. In 1955, 1956 and 1957, he received Emmy® nominations (with others) for Best Comedy Writing for Caesar's Hour. In 1952, Brooks wrote sketches for 's Broadway smash-hit revue , and in 1957, together with Joe Darien, he wrote the book for the Broadway musical , which starred . In 1962, he wrote the book for the Broadway musical , starring Ray Bolger.

In the '60s, Brooks teamed up with to write and perform The albmns, which became immediate bestsellers. In 1960 and 1961, Brooks and Reiner received Grammy nominations for Best Spoken-Word Comedy for 2000 Years and for Best Comedy Performance for 2000 and One Years, respectively. In 1997, Brooks and Reiner reamed up again for The 2000 Year Old Man in the Year 2000. Both a book and CD were released, the CD winning a Grarnmy in 1998 for the Best Spoken-Word Albmn, Comedy.

Brooks wrote and narrated The Critic, a short satire on avant-garde art films, which received the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Subject in 1964. In 1965, he teamed np with to create , the long-running television show starring . Brooks, along with others, received an Emmy for Outstanding Writing Achievement in Comedy­ Variety in 1967 for The Sid Caesar, , Carl Reiner, Special. In 1968, he wrote and directed his first feature film, The Producers, starring Zero Mosie! and , which earned him an Academy Award® for Best Original Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen. He then went on to create a remarkable string ofhlt comedies: 1970, wrote, directed and acted in The Twelve Chairs; 1974, co-wrote, directed and acted in and was nominated, along with , for Best Title Song, "Blazing Saddles"; 1974, co-wrote and directed Young Frankenstein; 1976, co­ wrote, directed and starred in Silent Movie; 1977, co-wrote, directed, produced and starred in ; 1981, wrote, directed, produced and starred in History of the World, Part I; 1983, produced and starred in To Be or Not to Be; 1987, co­ wrote, directed, produced and starred in the hit sci-fi spoof, ; 1991, co-wrote, directed, produced and starred in ; 1993, co-wrote, directed, produced and starred in Robin Hood: Men in Tights; 1995, co-wrote, directed, produced and starred in Dracula: Dead and Loving It; and 2005, co-wrote and produced The Producers, the film version of his Tony­ winning 2001 Broadway musical and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, "There's Nothing Like a Show on Broadway." For three successive seasons, Brooks won Emmys for his role as Uncle Phil on the hit comedy show . His visionary film company, Brooksfilms Limited, founded in 1980, has produced some of 's most distinguished films, among them David Lynch's The Elephant Man, David Cronenberg's The Fly, Graeme Clifford's Frances, 's and David Jones' 84 Charing Cross Road, starring Anthony Hopkins and .

Last year, commemorating his lifelong contributions to American culture, Brooks was named among the most recent recipients of the prestigious .
