2Nd Annual Tribute Event Mel Brooks Will Capp-Ture Your Attention As 2nd Annual Tribute Event Sunday, November 2, 2014 Martin and Esther Capp have created a path of generosity that has epitomized their life in the Jewish and broader community. Temple of Aaron, the JCC and שיר חדש many other organizations are forever indebted to the Capps for their vision and lifelong giving. Temple of Aaron deeply appreciates their kindness, beginning in the 1950s when the Highland Park building was constructed, and continuing through the years with the Capp Lounge, Capital Repair, Clergy Fund and the Jubilee Celebration. The Capps’ compassion delivered the major gift to build the St. Paul JCC in 1963, which carries their name, and they have continued supporting the JCC with Capital Repair, Camp Butwin additions and the Burt Garr Matching Gift Fund. In addition, Jewish Family Service presented the Community Service Award to the Capps in 1995, and Marty, who once served as Hillel President at University of Minnesota, currently is providing assistance to renovate the building. Esther has used her talents while serving on numerous Boards, including Temple of Aaron, JCC and JFS, and she contributed enormous energy helping with Russian and Eastern European resettlement. In the general community, the Capps recently donated major gifts to support Sholom East, St. Paul Children’s Hospital, Minnesota Children’s Museum, Herzl Camp and United Hospital in St. Paul. Mel Brooks will Capp-ture your Attention as Special Entertainment for Special Community Leaders Mel has won an Academy Award, Emmy Award, Tony Award and a Laurence Olivier Award. We all know he has not yet won a Temple of Aaron Award. Mel will bring his comedic genius to St Paul to entertain us. LOOK WHO’S LAUGHING: BLACK BUDDIES, BODIES, AND UNLAUGHTER IN THE NEO-SLAVE NARRATIVE Alexander Catchings Interracial, comical camaraderie propels Charles Johnson’s 1982 Oxherding Tale. Some time around 1840, a drunken Jonathan Polkinghorne, master of the South Carolina Cripplegate Plantation, sips whiskey alongside his most loyal house slave, George. The chums sit on the house’s porch when Jonathan confesses that his wife Anna would “brain me like a milkstool” for going to bed with her smelling of spirits (Johnson 2). George admits his wife would feel equal disapproval in the slave quarters, so Jonathan suggests the two switch bedrooms (and consequentially, wives) for the evening. He explains that if they follow his plan then neither wife can be mad at her respective husband for coming to bed drunk. The men shake hands, and minutes later George is engaging Anna, who sleeps with a sleeping eye mask, in intercourse. After “gripping the headboard” and gleefully groaning, “Oh gawd, Jonathan,” Anna realizes who her partner really is, letting fly a horrified shriek (6). Almost synchronously, a shrill cry comes from the slave quarters—Jonathan screams in fright while being chased off by George’s enraged wife, Mattie. As the two men, naked and frenzied, pass each other at the house’s entrance, Jonathan asks George, “Whose fat idea was this?” With countrified candor, George reminds his owner, “Suh, it was you who told me…” (7). This carnivalesque opening scene bears an easy humor as it ruptures traditional dynamics between slave and master. Jonathan’s role as a momentary trickster figure, duping his own slave in order to be sexually deviant with a woman in the slave quarters, moves this scene into the realm of absurdity.

The dialogue is full of “n—s” and “f—gs,” the randy female lead played by Madeline Kahn is named “Lili Von Shtupp,” and the moron Mongo commits animal abuse by K.O.-ing a blameless horse. Political correctness? What’s that? The movie was also deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant by the Library of Congress in 2006 and preserved in the National Film Registry.

THE SOUTH ACCORDING TO QUENTIN TARANTINO A Thesis presented in partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture The University of Mississippi by MICHAEL LEE HENLEY August 2015 Copyright Michael Lee Henley 2015 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This thesis explores the filmmaker Quentin Tarantino’s portrayal of the South and southerners in his films Pulp Fiction (1994), Death Proof (2007), and Django Unchained (2012). In order to do so, it explores and explains Tarantino’s mixture of genres, influences, and filmmaking styles in which he places the South and its inhabitants into current trends in southern studies which aim to examine the South as a place that is defined by cultural reproductions, lacking authenticity, and cultural distinctiveness. Like Godard before him, Tarantino’s movies are commentaries on film history itself. In short, Tarantino’s films actively reimagine the South and southerners in a way that is not nostalgic for a “southern way of life,” nor meant to exploit lower class whites.
