Production history Made as a one hour television documentary, 'Into the Mainstream' follows the Aboriginal band Yothu Yindi on its journey across America in 1988 with rock groups Midnight Oil and Graffiti Man (featuring John Trudell). Yothu Yindi is famed for drawing on the song-cycles of its Arnhem Land roots to create a mix of traditional Aboriginal music and rock and roll. -

Competition came from some twenty crews in superb vehicles – and those crews had some outstanding events in which to compete under the auspices of CAMS. Firstly, there was the inaugural Australian Rally Championship (ARC); secondly the Southern Cross International Rally; thirdly, the London to Sydney Marathon, which clashed with the last round of the Championship. The ARC was a series of six rallies conducted in four states, of which the best five scores counted for the final pointscore. First placed gained 9 points with the following five places earning 6, 4, 3, 2, 1, as was the common scoring system in circuit racing. -

To examine Metz‘s sources and how others expand upon his work, I propose a two-part thesis. Part one arises from critical appraisal of sources upon which Metz relies in formulating his idea of memory. While the thinkers Metz draws upon are secular Jewish philosophers, Metz appropriates key notions in specifically theological ways by linking them with the memoria passionis of Jesus Christ and the Jewish religious roots of memory. Furthermore, Metz‘s apocalyptic/eschatological hope for the future differs from secular and postmodern hopes for something surprising, new, and redemptive because Metz advocates real, faith-filled content for these ideas. Part two of the thesis is critical-constructive. Metz‘s idea of memory has the potential to be more than an anthropological category. While reticent to speak of God‘s memory, anamnestic reason becomes a way of speaking about God‘s work of salvation for and with humanity. This becomes clearer when his idea of memory is considered in conjunction with the theology of God‘s memory in the writings of Latin American Candace Kristina McLean liberation theologian Gustavo Gutiérrez. -

1 Picturing a Golden Age: September and Australian Rules Pauline Marsh, University of Tasmania Abstract: In two Australian coming-of-age feature films, Australian Rules and September, the central young characters hold idyllic notions about friendship and equality that prove to be the keys to transformative on- screen behaviours. Intimate intersubjectivity, deployed in the close relationships between the indigenous and nonindigenous protagonists, generates multiple questions about the value of normalised adult interculturalism. I suggest that the most pointed significance of these films lies in the compromises that the young adults make. As they reach the inevitable moral crisis that awaits them on the cusp of adulthood, despite pressures to abandon their childhood friendships they instead sustain their utopian (golden) visions of the future. It is 1968, rural Western Australia. As we glide along an undulating bitumen road up ahead we see, from a low camera angle, a school bus moving smoothly along the same route. Periodically a smattering of roadside trees filters the sunlight, but for the most part open fields of wheat flank the roadsides and stretch out to the horizon, presenting a grand and golden vista. As we reach the bus, music that has hitherto been a quiet accompaniment swells and in the next moment we are inside the vehicle with a fair-haired teenager. The handsome lad, dressed in a yellow school uniform, is drawing a picture of a boxer in a sketchpad. Another cut takes us back outside again, to an equally magnificent view from the front of the bus. This mesmerising piece of cinema—the opening of September (Peter Carstairs, 2007)— affords a viewer an experience of tranquillity and promise, and is homage to the notion of a golden age of youth. -

Barry Ferguson/Dave Johnson in the Holden Torana GTR – from the 1971 regulations booklet 1970 7 - 11 OCTOBER SYDNEY – PORT MACQUARIE - SYDNEY 62 PREAMBLE The New South Wales tourist resort town of Port Macquarie became the host town to the 1970 Southern Cross International Rally, again directed by Alan Lawson. In between starting and finishing in Sydney, the event spent three nights at Port Macquarie, with its thousands of square miles of adjacent forests, ideal for the way rallying was developing now that shire roads were not readily available. The new area allowed for an event in excess of 3000 kilometres and was considered to be able to provide competition at least half as tough again as previous events, although 1969 was not considered to be as tough as the first three years, when the event passed through the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria. The Southern Cross International Rally was becoming a major undertaking, and one that brought rewards to entrants and competitors, and also to the commercial and tourist interests who supported it. With this kind of support, the event looked forward to be being Australia’s answer to some of the top overseas events. The starting order was by ballot within five categories, which unlike previous years, reflected the increasingly international status of the event. The first category was drivers who had placed up to 6th in an international rally. The second category was for drivers placed up to 12th in any international rally or up to 6th in a national championship rally. The third category was for drivers who had placed up to 3rd in class in an international rally or up to 12th in a national championship rally. -

For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] The Flip Side: Women on the Redex Around Australia Reliability trials of the 1950s Georgine Clarsen In August 1953 almost 200 cars set off from the Sydney Showgrounds in what popular motoring histories have called the biggest, toughest, most ambitious, demanding, ‘no-holds-barred’ race, which ‘caught the public imagination’ and ‘fuelled the nation with excitement’.1 It was the first Redex Around Australia Reliability Trial and organisers claimed it would be more testing than the famous Monte Carlo Rally through Europe and was the longest and most challenging motoring event since the New York-to-Paris race of 1908.2 That 1953 field circuited the eastern half of the continent, travelling north via Brisbane, Mt Isa and Darwin, passing through Alice Springs to Adelaide and returning to the start point in Sydney via Melbourne. Two Redex trials followed, in 1954 and 1955, and each was longer and more demanding than the one before. -

As the Spirit Moves: A Study of Personal Spirituality as a Source for Musical Inspiration Philip Frank Bywater Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music Performance by Research October 2010 Faculty of the VCA & Music, The University of Melbourne Abstract This research aims to clarify links existing between the performing activities of musicians and their spiritual and religious backgrounds. Specifically, it investigates my spiritual background and the impact it has had on my creative musical activities from 1990-2010. It explores my involvement with the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), demonstrates links between Quaker religious practice and improvised musical performance, charts the musical and spiritual influence of Indigenous Australians on my performances, and examines the influence of contemporary Australian Quaker thought on my recorded and notated musical activities. Chapter 1 outlines my personal spiritual background. It examines the history of Quakerism, clarifying its conceptual origins and outlining the ongoing commitment of Quakers to social justice issues. The conflicted history of art-making within the Society of Friends is investigated, and experiential links between “improvisational” Quaker worship and the practices of improvising musicians are identified. In Chapter 2 I scrutinise my experiences performing with Australian Indigenous musicians, clarifying links in my own performances with Indigenous ideas and concepts of music-making, and exploring how my musical performance and social and spiritual understanding have grown due to Indigenous influences. I explore issues of meaning, language, politics and social structure in relation to Indigenous music, establishing their possible impact on musical structure and performance in Indigenous rock and reggae music.
