J. Peach 8 Our ‘very special’ Guest Martin Jenkins - The Oldershaw School 1951 -1958 Life for Martin began in Wallasey and at school he enjoyed and excelled in English Literature and Drama. Martin speaks with great fondness about his teachers especially Joe Wolfman who he believes, along with Jimmie Ford, inspired him to achieve in school and in life. Martin’s other great love was a fanatical fascination with Public Transport. For over 55 years his friends – including Chris Bennett – and his long suffering family have been dragged around trams, trains, trolleybuses and ferries. He produced a number of videos including a best-selling history of the Liverpool Overhead Railway – The Dockers Umbrella and preserved one of Liverpool’s famous Green Goddess trams. He has also co-written books on Wallasey Trams and Ferries. Martin progressed from Oldershaw to Liverpool University where he met his wife Jacqui and married her in 1965. They had four lovely children – 3 girls and a boy. Sadly Jacqui passed away recently. In 2006 he was given an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Liverpool and was very proud that Sonia and Joe Wolfman were able to be his guests at the ceremony. Founding the Everyman Theatre in 1964 Martin along with Pete James and Terry Hands founded the Everyman Theatre in Hope Street Liverpool in 1964. This theatre has given great joy and pleasure to hundreds of thousands of people. Originally it encouraged local talent and developed new artists and writers. The Liverpool Scene gained a national reputation and included artists, poets, musicians, and sculptors such as Arthur Dooley, Roger McGough and Adrian Henri. It has shown the works of Liverpool playwrights, Willy Russell and Alan Bleasdale and established the careers of Julie Walters, Roger Phillips, Bernard Hill, Jonathan Pryce, Pete Postlethwaite, Antony Sher, Bill Nighy, Barbara Dickson, Matthew Kelly, and Cathy Tyson. The Royal Shakespeare Company In 1962 Martin joined the Royal Shakespeare Company and performed as an actor and eventually became a successful director. He saw this as a perfect job – being paid to do something he loved and meeting all the very best actors and actresses from across the world. Director of Drama at the BBC Martin then joined the BBC producing over 1000 programs and eventually became the Chief Drama Producer. Martins' famous advice to actors was: "half the volume, twice the intensity." His work includes Julius Caesar with Richard Dreyfuss and A Streetcar Named Desire. He was nominated for a SONY Best Production Award in the UK in 1998 and was awarded the USA- UNDA Gold Award for "The Trojan Women" in 1999. 9 Year 13 Leavers 2011 Jade Assall Lianna Elsam Sara Martin Sean Boston Steven Fairclough Abbie Nelson Kayleigh Brabander Jed Fielding Sarah McQueen Jennifer Cannon Jessica Hadden Aimee Morrow Christopher Carson Sophie Harold Emma Murray Laura Clements Lauren Harvey Jamie Nash Gemma Coggins Justine Hesketh Steven Saunders Ashleigh Connelly Philomena Higginson Dominic Smedley-Jones Stuart Connor Charlotte Williams Arron Stewart Joshua Courtney Stephanie Hooker Kevin Tsang Stephan Crennell Denzil Jones Andrew Walker Alex Drury Stephen Kennedy Steven Warrington Millie Skelhorn-Duffey Daisy Kenny Hannah Wood Leah Dunkerley Grace Kenny Steven Woods Samuel Dutton Scott Lowe Jade Wylde Natalie Eastwood Jessica Marl Year 11 Leavers 2011 Daniel Atherton Molly Hamer Jordann Patten Lauren Barlow Jade Hardie Lee Prescott Michael Barlow Elizabeth Heath Dale Redfern Josh Beaman Colin Henry Michael Reilly Damian Boote Chelsea Herlihy Joshua Robinson Charlotte Boyd Alexander Higginson Ben Ryan Jordan Brennan Georgina Hughes Rasheed Saeed Jodie Bromilow Shaun Hughes Nathan Searles Alexander Cady Stephanie Hughes Connor Shindler Jessica Carr Jamie-Lee Jackson Jenna-Lin Sime Thomas Chadderton Sophie Jamieson Lucy Taylor Layna Hamilton Ashley Kazara Charley Tinken Kieran Cottrell Joseph Keatley Ashleigh Towey Carl Cubbin Connor McCloud Shennon Turton Daniel Davies Denise McDermott Thomas Vanderbilt Leigh-Anne Doughty Kieran Mercer Hope Walker James Emmett Kieran Molyneux Daniel West Jadie-Leigh Gill Matthew Moore Elizabeth Willers Joshua Greany Michael Moore Ashley Woodward Harley Green Katie Moran Matthew Griffiths Charlotte Murphy All at the Oldershaw Academy would like to wish all our departing students every success and happiness in your futures. • Smiles Better West of Minsk
REVIEW Frank Cottrell Boyce is on the scene of the third Merseyside Festival Of Comedy Smiles Better west of Minsk. And a queue is the best audience in the world. Everyone in a queue is bored, you need only tell the slightest knock-knock joke to be treated like a pro- phet of better days. But the people of this city have an even longer tradi- tion and culture of waiting around: wives waiting for their seafaring husbands to return; dockers waiting for their ship to come in; mer- chant seamen waiting to go home. And in the meantime, a few jokes and a few songs. Then of course there's the Irish connection. Now I'm not saying that Sterne, Swift and Wilde are in the same league as Chegwin, Tarbuck and As- key, but the prestige of verbal performance is a feature of Irish culture. All dominated cultures have their ways of reasserting pride. For the Irish in Britain it was the smart reply and this has stuck in Liverpool. Then there's Catholicism. Catholics are still not in the majority in Liverpool but all of Liverpool's key cultural figures have Catholic roots with the exception of Mrs Hemans (author of 'The Boy Stood On The Burning Deck') and Gladstone. Where the personal columns of left-wing magazines are filled with sensitive guys looking for mountain bikes or lesbian couples looking for sperm, the personal column of the Liverpool Echo is filled with thank-you letters to the Sacred Heart and to St Jude (one in today's is signed, 'Grateful Protestant').

  • Here Would Be a Message from the Northern Athletics President
WELCOME MESSAGE Normally in this space there would be a message from the Northern Athletics President. Unfortunately that is not the case this year as our incumbent President, Dr Leo Carroll sadly passed away in June after a short illness. I would however like to pay tribute to him here by remembering what a devoted athletics fan he was. An accomplished athlete for Wirral AC in his youth, Leo went on to become Hon Secretary, Chairman and/or President of Wirral AC, Merseyside AA, Northern Athletics and the ECCA amongst many other roles. Leo became NA President in November 2015 and had carried out his duties presenting medals and meeting the athletes at all Championship events up to the Senior Championships in June when he was too ill to attend. He thoroughly enjoyed the tasks associated with the Presidency and would have had a great time this weekend as he was particularly involved with Endurance events both as an athlete and as a fan. Whilst you are enjoying the races today, please spare a moment to remember that without loyal servants like Leo Carroll voluntarily carrying out administrative, coaching and officiating tasks, sports events such as this one simply would not happen. Thanks to all you unsung heroes out there. On a lighter note I would like to wish all the competitors here this weekend the best of luck in achieving their goals at whatever level that may be. • John Byrne's Scotland Paul Elliott, University of Worcester
Its Only Rock and Roll: John Byrne’s Scotland Paul Elliott, University of Worcester …I was brought up in Ferguslie Park housing scheme and found myself at the age of fourteen or so rejoicing in that fact and not really understanding why…Only later did I realise that I had been handed the greatest gift a budding painter/playwright could ever have…an enormous ‘treasure trove’ of language, oddballs, crooks, twisters, comics et al…into which I could dip a hand and pull out a mittful of gold dust. (Byrne 2014: 23) John Patrick Byrne was born six days into 1940 and grew up in the Ferguslie Park area of Glasgow. His father earned a living through a series of laboring and manual jobs and his mother was an usherette at the Moss Park Picture House. Byrne took to painting and drawing from an early age and recounts his mother stating that he began drawing in the pram as she wheeled him around the housing estate where they lived. As evidenced by the quote above, Byrne constantly drew on the people he met and saw in his early childhood for his art, and much of his later work can be seen to reflect this child-like vision of the world. When he was in his late childhood, Byrne’s mother was diagnosed with schizophrenia and taken to the Riccartsbar Mental Hospital in Paisley. This had an enormous impact on the young artist’s development and his creative output would be peppered with images of feminine abandonment and women with fragile mental states.
