    WELCOME MESSAGE Normally in this space there would be a message from the Northern Athletics President. Unfortunately that is not the case this year as our incumbent President, Dr Leo Carroll sadly passed away in June after a short illness. I would however like to pay tribute to him here by remembering what a devoted athletics fan he was. An accomplished athlete for Wirral AC in his youth, Leo went on to become Hon Secretary, Chairman and/or President of Wirral AC, Merseyside AA, Northern Athletics and the ECCA amongst many other roles. Leo became NA President in November 2015 and had carried out his duties presenting medals and meeting the athletes at all Championship events up to the Senior Championships in June when he was too ill to attend. He thoroughly enjoyed the tasks associated with the Presidency and would have had a great time this weekend as he was particularly involved with Endurance events both as an athlete and as a fan. Whilst you are enjoying the races today, please spare a moment to remember that without loyal servants like Leo Carroll voluntarily carrying out administrative, coaching and officiating tasks, sports events such as this one simply would not happen. Thanks to all you unsung heroes out there. On a lighter note I would like to wish all the competitors here this weekend the best of luck in achieving their goals at whatever level that may be.     PRESS RELEASE Everyman Theatre, Liverpool 18th Feb 2014 The Liverpool Everyman is a new theatre, won in open European competition, for an internationally regarded producing company. The scope of work includes a 400 seat adaptable auditorium, a smaller performance and development space, a large rehearsal room, public foyers, exhibition spaces, catering and bar facilities, along with supporting offices, workshops and ancillary spaces. The entire façade is a large, collaborative work of public art. The design combines thermally massive construction with a series of natural ventilation systems and low energy technical infrastructures to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating for this complex and densely inhabited urban building. Steve Tompkins, Director of Haworth Tompkins said: "The Everyman project has been a labour of love for almost a decade, during which time we've come to understand the unique quality of Liverpool's architecture and the deep civic pride of its people. I hope this new incarnation of the Everyman will command the same affection and loyalty as the previous one, and inspire a new generation of Liverpool theatre makers and audiences." The Everyman holds an important place in Liverpool culture. The original theatre, converted from the 19th century Hope Hall chapel, had served the city well as a centre of creativity, conviviality and dissent (often centred in its famous subterranean Bistro) but by the new millennium the building was in need of complete replacement to serve a rapidly expanding production and participation programme. Haworth Tompkins’ brief was to design a technically advanced and highly adaptable new theatre that would retain the friendly, democratic accessibility of the old building, project the organisation’s values of cultural inclusion, community engagement and local creativity, and encapsulate the collective identity of the people of Liverpool.

I have been in-house casting director for Chichester Festival Theatre, Rose Theatre Kingston, English Touring Theatre and Soho Theatre and returned to the RSC in 2005/6 to lead the casting for the Complete Works Season. I currently work closely with Danny Moar on many of the shows for Theatre Royal Bath Productions, with Laurence Boswell at the Ustinov Studio Theatre and with Howard Panter and Trafalgar Theatre Productions. Abstract Troilus and Cressida is the unusual instance of a Shakespearean play which had long been read and commented upon before stage practitioners explored it in the theatre. My thesis examines the changing perceptions of the play’s characters, paying attention to the chronological relationship between revisions in literary criticism, much of which was written with little proximity to performance, with reinterpretations during its British stage history. The thesis has a particular focus on issues of gender and sexuality. Both the theatre and literary criticism reflected and responded to social change in their dealings with this play, but they did so at different moments. By using the case of Troilus and Cressida, I examine whether theatrical practice or academic literary criticism has acted as the more efficient cultural barometer.
