What is the actual colour of the universe? Is it black? ? A whimsical mix of galactic purples and pinks? How about an office wall ? In 2002, a pair of scientists from Australia determined that the true colour of the universe was beige, not turquoise or a pale blue as previously thought. Some coined the shade as “cosmic latte” due to the milky appearance. This coffee-stained became a starting point within this brief, inspiring me to delve into a space age world and explore colours in the Archroma Colour Atlas.

I experimented with the ancient Japanese technique of marbling – Suminagashi. Literally translating to ‘floating ink’, when created effectively the pattern loosely resembles the swirls of the . I tested the technique in order to replicate the shapes of the universe that we all see, regardless of colour, in the spiralling arms of the galaxy and milky ways (spiral arms is a term used to describe the layout of a region of within .) I then digitalised the various patterns and edited the colours to conform to the “actual colour” of the universe. They replicate the unique swirling motions throughout the sky, and much like Suminigashi – it is never the same twice.

Taking into account my impact on the environment and planet by means of sustainability, I digitalised the marble pattern and modified the colours to fit the “cosmic latte” theme. This meant that I was able to prevent unnecessary water waste within the design process. When it comes to the creation of garments, digital sublimation is a much less polluting method of printing. Throughout this brief, I conducted some research into how we individually perceive colour. Every living being sees the universe differently with one in twenty humans having a form of colour blindness. This colour-blindness only allows an individual to perceive colours at a reduced colour space. Having a reduced colour space means that somebody who is colour blind could perceive two colours (that appear distinctively different to a person with normal colour vision) as the same colour. This phenomenon is called “confusion lines” with every colour on these lines appearing the same to a person who is colour-blind. Using the Colour Atlas by Archroma, I created my colour palette in accordance with the “cosmic latte” theme but is also similar to the shade ranges that - colour- blind people see (Deuteranopia).

To tie the universe theme together, I sought out the 1960s space age era for fashion and media influences. With galactic cut outs, space-man shapes and mods, the 60s was my final reference point for out of this world design. My line up consists of a spin on 60s trends of boxy fitting garments, thigh high (mini skirt) length hems and over the top print. I aimed to modernize a vintage trend with an age- old technique, and I hope this outcome brings the viewer some nostalgia and joy for the colours of our universe.
