Geography Msc Title.P65 PREFACE In the curricular structure introduced by this University for students of Post- Graduate degree programme, the opportunity to pursue Post-Graduate course in any subject is equally available to all learners. Instead of being guided by any presumption about ability level, it would perhaps stand to reason if receptivity of a learner is judged in the course of the learning process. That would be entirely in keeping with the objectives of open education which does not believe in artificial differentiation. Keeping this in view, study materials of the Post-Graduate level in different subjects are being prepared on the basis of a well laid-out syllabus. The course structure combines the best elements in the approved syllabi of Central and State Universities in respective subjects. It has been so designed as to be upgradable with the addition of new information as well as results of fresh thinking and analyses. The accepted methodology of distance education has been followed in the preparation of these study materials. Co-operation in every form of experienced scholars is indispensable for a work of this kind. We, therefore, owe an enormous debt of gratitude to everyone whose tireless efforts went into the writing, editing and devising of a proper lay-out of the materials. Practically speaking, their role amounts to an involvement in invisible teaching. For, whoever makes use of these study materials would virtually derive the benefit of learning under their collective care without each being seen by the other. The more a learner would seriously pursue these study materials the easier it will be for him or her to reach out to larger horizons of a subject. Care has also been taken to make the language lucid and presentation attractive so that they may be rated as quality self-learning materials. If anything remains still obscure or difficult to follow, arrangements are there to come to terms with them through the counselling sessions regularly available at the network of study centres set up by the University. Historical geography studies a wide variety of issues and topics. A common theme is the study of the geographies of the past and how a place or region changes through time. Many historical geographers study, geographical patterns through time, including how people have interacted with their environment, and created the cultural landscape. Historical geography seeks to determine how cultural features of various societies across the planet emerged and evolved, by understanding their interaction with their local environment and surroundings. In its early days, Historical geography was difficult to define as a subject. A textbook from the 1950s cites a previous definition as an ‘unsound attempt by geographers to explain history. Its author, J.B. Mitchell, came down firmly on the side of geography : ‘the historical geographer is a geographer first last and all the time’. By 1975 the first number of the Journal of Historical Geography has widened the discipline to a broader church: ‘the writings of scholars of any disciplinary provenance who have something to say about matters of geographical interest relating to past time’. For some in the United States, the term historical geography has a more specialized meaning: the name given by Carl Ortwin Sauer of University of California, Berkeley to his program of reorganizing cultural geography (some say all geography) along regional lines, beginning in the first decades of the 20th century. To Sauer, a landscape and the 7 cultures in it could only be understood if all of its influences through history were taken into account: physical, cultural, economic, political, environmental. Sauer stressed regional specialization as the only means of gaining sufficient expertise on regions of the world. Sauer’s philosophy was the principal shaper of American geographic thought in the mid-20th century. Regional specialists remain in academic geography departments to this day. But some geographers feel that it harmed the discipline; that too much effort was spent on data collection and classification, and too little on analysis and explanation. Studies became more and more area-specific as later geographers struggled to find places to make names for themselves. These factors may have led in turn to the 1950s crisis in geography, which raised serious questions about geography as an academic discipline in the United States. This sub-branch of human geography is closed related to history and environmental history. At many colleges it is a field of study in Historical studies. 1.1.1 Definition of Historical Geography Basically Historical Geography is a sub-field of Human Geography dealing with the works of explorers and geographers of the past and their relations with the present. It can precisely be stated that Historical Geography is interested in reconstruction of past Geographical phenomena at present. So Historical Geography can be defined in more general terms that the study of past geographical or events. The study of past geographical phenomena is inseparable from geography in general, because to understand the present status of any geographical phenomenon or phenomena past study is inevitable. It is true that without having any knowledge of past events the knowledge of present becomes meaningless. Nature, Scope and Content of Historical Geography Since the emergence of the subject Geography as an academic discipline (Darwin) historical studies have featured prominently in the subject. The fact that historical geography studies both space (chorology) and time (chronology) leads some to contend that it is as much a mode of analysis as discrete branch of knowledge. Certainly, the field can appear almost boundless since in contrast to other sub branches of geography, it is defined not by concentration on a particular area of theme but by its focus on the dimension–that of time. It has been argued that all geography is historical geography since a full understanding of the present requires an appreciation of the past. In practice, however, the subject matter of historical geography has been defined by practitioners in a slightly less eclectic manner, typically summarized as (a) Geogrphy of the past, (b) Changing landscapes, (c) the past in the present and (d) Geographical history. 8 Methodologically, these may he distributed into static or synchronic reconstruction of the past periods and process studies of geographical change. In addition to the centrality of time historical geography has also traditionaly been characterized as an academic as opposed to applied discipline. Major Areas of Temporal (Historical) Explanation in Geography The main areas of geographic research specifically involving the study changed through time (Darwin) are : (a) cultural geography (study of landscape); (b) innovation diffusion (spread of phenomena over space through time); (c) time geography– relates to analysis of space, time, patterns and process; (d) the process–form approach to explanation–geographers are becoming more and more interested in reference to spatial process which requires study of past and present location. Approaches to the Study of Historical Geography There are four approaches to the study of Historical Geography (i) Operation of the geographical factor in history; (ii) Evolution of cultural landscapes; (iii) Reconstruction of past geography; (iv) Study of geographical changes through time. (i) Operation of the geographical factor in history : In regard to the operation of geographical factor in history it is noted that any phenomenon or events could best be understood by studying, listing and classifying the operation or action of particular groups of factors and effects, each group producing its own particular pattern of influence. So in shaping the history of past the geographical factor such as physical i.e. relief, climate, soil, vegetation etc play important role. In the development of historical events geographical factors dominate the entire process of development.

Personal names may become ethnic names, as in the case of the Tuyu- hun. 4 Names of neighbouring tribes might be projected onto their overlords, as in the case of the Ḥaža, who were conquered by the Tuyuhun, the latter then being called Ḥaža by the Tibetans. Ethnic names may become geographical names, but then, place names may travel along with ethnic groups.

    Geography of Early Historical Punjab Ardhendu Ray Chatra Ramai Pandit Mahavidyalaya Chatra, Bankura, West Bengal The present paper is an attempt to study the historical geography of Punjab. It surveys previous research, assesses the emerging new directions in historical geography of Punjab, and attempts to understand how archaeological data provides new insights in this field. Trade routes, urbanization, and interactions in early Punjab through material culture are accounted for as significant factors in the overall development of historical and geographical processes. Introduction It has aptly been remarked that for an intelligent study of the history of a country, a thorough knowledge of its geography is crucial. Richard Hakluyt exclaimed long ago that “geography and chronology are the sun and moon, the right eye and left eye of all history.”1 The evolution of Indian history and culture cannot be rightly understood without a proper appreciation of the geographical factors involved. Ancient Indian historical geography begins with the writings of topographical identifications of sites mentioned in the literature and inscriptions. These were works on geographical issues starting from first quarter of the nineteenth century. In order to get a clear understanding of the subject matter, now we are studying them in different categories of historical geography based on text, inscriptions etc., and also regional geography, cultural geography and so on. This article is an attempt to understand the contours and history of Thar Desert of Rajasthan and to explore the features that have kept the various desert states (Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bikaner etc.) and their populace sustaining in this region throughout the ages, even when this region had scarce water resources and intense desert with huge and extensive dunes. Through political control the dynasts kept the social organisation intact which ensured regular incomes for their respective dynasties. Through the participation of various social actors this dry and hot desert evolved as a massive trade emporium. The intense trade activities of Thar Desert kept the imperial centres intact in this agriculturally devoid zone. In the harsh environmental conditions, limited means, resources and the objects, the settlers of this desert were able to create a huge economy that sustained effectively. The economy build by them not only allowed the foundation and formation of the states, it also ensured their continuation and expansion over the centuries.

    Religion, ‘Nature’ and Environmental Ethics in Ancient India: Archaeologies of Human:Non- Human Suffering and Well-being in early Buddhist and Hindu contexts Julia Shaw (UCL Institute of Archaeology) Abstract: This paper assesses archaeology’s contribution to debates regarding the ecological focus of early Buddhism and Hinduism and its relevance to global environmentalism. Evidence for long-term human:non-human entanglement, and the socio- economically constructed element of ‘nature’ on which Indic culture supposedly rests, challenges post-colonial tropes of India's utopian, 'eco-friendly' past, whilst also highlighting the potency of individual human:non-human epistemologies for building historically grounded models of Indian environmentalism. For early Buddhism,I mediate between two polarized views: one promoting the idea of ‘eco-dharma’, as a reflection of Buddhism’s alignment with non-violence (ahiṃsā), and the alleviation of suffering (dukkha); a second arguing that early Buddhist traditions have been misappropriated by western environmentalism. I argue that the latter view subscribes to canonical models of passive monks removed from worldly concerns, despite archaeological evidence for socially-engaged monastic landlordism from the late centuries BC. Others cite this evidence only to negate Buddhism’s eco- credentials, thereby overlooking the human:non-human entanglement theme within modern environmental discourse, while the predominant focus on non-human suffering overlooks convergences between modern and ancient ecological ethics and environmental health. Case studies include examples of Buddhist land and water management in central India, set within discussions of human v. non-human-centric frameworks of well-being and suffering, purity and pollution, and broader Indic medico-ecological epistemologies, as possible models for collective responses to environmental stress.

The lion is the king of the animal world. They live in the plain and grassy hills particularly. Due to these characteristics, the lion has been considered through all ages in the world as a symbol of royalty and protection as well as of wisdom and pride, especially in Hindu- Buddhist religion. In Buddhism, lions are symbolic of the Bodhisattvas. In Buddhist architecture, lion symbols are used as protectors of Dharma and therefore support the throne of the Buddha’s and Bodhisattvas. The lion symbol is also used in Hindu temple architecture as Jora Shiva Temple, Akhrapara Mondir of Jashore. In Bangladesh, there are various types of lion symbol used in terracotta plaques of Ananda Vihara, Rupbhan Mura, and Shalban Vihara at Mainamati in Comilla district, Vashu Vihara, Mankalir Kundo at Mahasthangarh in Bogra district and Somapura Mahavihara at Paharpur in Naogaon district. This research has been trying to find out the cultural significance of the lion symbol in Hindu-Buddhist art and architecture of Bangladesh.
