We first present the rich linguistic and biological diversity of this region, which is of significant interest in typological and theoretical linguistics and language documentation. We then discuss certain central educational issues in relation to human resources, infrastructures, and institutional support, critical for high quality research and documentation. We argue that the issues are multidimensional and complex across all levels, posing sociocultural challenges in capacity-building programs. Finally, we reflect on the significance of the participation oflocal fieldworkers and communities and their contextual training. 1. Introduction In this paper, we reflect on linguistic fieldwork and language documentation in Eastern Indonesia. By “Eastern Indonesia,” we mean the region that stretches from Nusa Tenggara to Papua,1 including Nusa Tenggara Timur, Sulawesi, and Maluku. This region is linguistically one of the most diverse regions in the world interms of the number of unrelated languages and their structural properties, further discussed in the next section. Today, Malay has grown into one of the largest languages in the world, with over 250 million users. Remarkable because Malay never was the largest language in the area (Javanese, Sundanese) nor was it centrally located. Inevitable because whenever it counted, there was no alternative. LANGUAGE SIZE: FACTORS Endangered languages: Factors that lead to endangerment (Brenzinger 1991) Discussion of factors that make a language large have focused on individual speaker choice Today’s point: Languages grow large primarily as a result of them being adopted & promoted by a powerful state Speaker take-up is an epiphenomenon of that. INSULAR SEA: THE MALAY ARCHIPELAGO MALAY VERSUS MALAYSIA Malaysia has 2 land masses: Northern Borneo “Dayak languages”: Iban, Kadazandusun, etc. “Malay peninsula” Aslian languages: Austroasiatic Coastal Borneo & Sumatra as the Malay homeland LANGUAGES OF SUMATRA INSULAR SEA AT THE START OF THE COLONIAL PERIOD Portuguese arrival 1509 in search of the spice islands They discovered that 1 language was understood across the archipelago: Malay Q:Why was this so? Chapter 5 Information structure in Sembiran Balinese I Wayan Arka Australian National University / Universitas Udayana I Nyoman Sedeng Universitas Udayana This paper discusses the information structure in Sembiran Balinese, an endangered, con- servative mountain dialect of Balinese. It presents the first detailed description of the ways topic, focus and frame setter in this language interact with each other and with other ele- ments in grammar. It is demonstrated that Sembiran Balinese employs combined strategies that exploit structural positions, morpho-lexical and syntactic resources in grammar. The description is based on a well-defined set of categories of information structure using three semantic-discourse/pragmatic features of [+/−salient], [+/−given] and [+/−contrast]. This novel approach allows for the in-depth exploration of the information structure space in Sembiran Balinese. The paper also highlights the empirical-theoretical contributions ofthe findings in terms of the significance of local socio-cultural context, and the conception of information structural prominence in grammatical theory. 1 Introduction Sembiran Balinese is one of the endangered conservative dialects of Balinese (i.e. Bali Aga, or Mountain Balinese). It is spoken by around 4,500 speakers in the mountainous village of Sembiran in northern Bali.1 Sembiran Balinese has a similar morphosyntax to Plains, or Dataran Balinese, but it is different in that it lacks the speech level system characteristics of Plains Balinese.2 The noticeable difference is therefore related tothe lexical stock, including the pronominal system, which is discussed in §2. 1SBD should be distinguished from the Plains Balinese dialect, which lexically has been influenced by many other languages, namely, Javanese, Sanskrit, English, Arabic and Indonesian. -

Linguistic Typology 2017; 21(3): 493–545 Language Profile Joanne Yager and Niclas Burenhult Jedek: A newly discovered Aslian variety of Malaysia https://doi.org/10.1515/lingty-2017-0012 Received November 22, 2016; revised October 10, 2017 Abstract: Jedek is a previously unrecognized variety of the Northern Aslian subgroup of the Aslian branch of the Austroasiatic language family. It is spoken by about 280 individuals in the resettlement area of Sungai Rual, near Jeli in Kelantan state, Peninsular Malaysia. The community originally consisted of several bands of foragers along the middle reaches of the Pergau river. Jedek’s distinct status first became known during a linguistic survey carried out in the DOBES project Tongues of the Semang (2005–2011). This article describes the process leading up to its discovery and provides an overview of its typological characteristics. JSEALS was formally established by decision of the SEALS 17 meeting, held at the University of Maryland in September 2007. It supersedes the Conference Proceedings, previously published by Arizona State University and later by Pacific Linguistics. JSEALS welcomes articles that are topical, focused on linguistic (as opposed to cultural or anthropological) issues, and which further the lively debate that characterizes the annual SEALS conferences. Although we expect in practice that most JSEALS articles will have been presented and discussed at the SEALS conference, submission is open to all regardless of their participation in SEALS meetings. Papers are expected to be written in English. Each paper is reviewed by at least two scholars, usually a member of the Advisory Board and one or more independent readers. Reviewers are volunteers, and we are grateful for their assistance in ensuring the quality of this publication. As an additional service we also admit data papers, reports and notes, subject to an internal review process. -

Whereas in most societies musi- cal genres are in the first place classified by social criteria, it is undeniable that also the technicalities of the music play a role: audiences hear the differences between, for instance, jaipongan and degung kawih perfor- mances. This is because these musics are produced in different ways, using different instruments, tone material, musical structure, etc. Alfred Gell made an important contribution to the anthropological study of art by pointing out that the production of art is a technological process. He mentions that there are ‘beautiful’ things, like beautiful women, beautiful horses and a beautiful sunset. However, art objects are made ‘beautiful’ by human beings and this requires technology. He criti- cizes sociologists like Pierre Bourdieu, who do not really look at an art object as a concrete product of human ingenuity, but only elaborately look at the represented symbolic meanings (Gell 1999:162). In contrast, Gell proposes that anthropologists should look at art as a ‘component of technology.’ We call something an object of art if it is the outcome of a technological process, the kind of processes in which artists are skilled. -

McKaughan’s analysis of Philippine voice Paul McKaughan’sKroeger analysis of Philippine voice Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics SIL International The voice systems of Philippine-type languages are a notorious problem for both descriptive grammarians and theoretical syntacticians.1 It sometimes seems as if Austronesian specialists can talk (and write) of nothing else. Our understanding of these systems, and the terms we use to describe them, owe a great debt to Howard McKaughan’s early work on Philippine languages, and in particular on Maranao. One of Howard’s most successful and influential proposals was one that he later tried to retract. I say “tried to retract” because by that time it had been so widely adopted among Philippinists as to be nearly indispensable. I am referring to Howard’s choice of the term topic for the noun phrase (NP) marked by so in Maranao (or ang in Tagalog). Both his reasons for making that choice in his early work (1958, 1962), and his reasons for arguing against it in later work (1973), are illuminating and reflect important insights into the structure of these languages. Aside from this one terminological innovation, the terms that McKaughan chose to describe the basic clause structure of Maranao were fairly conventional.2 He referred to the NP-relation markers (such as ang, ng, and sa in Tagalog) as case markers; the affixes on the verb which indicate the relation of the topic he called voice-marking affixes. But McKaughan felt it was necessary to depart from Bloomfield’s pioneering work on Tagalog (1917) and Ilokano (1942), in which the ang phrase was referred to as subject and the non-active voices as various types of passive: direct passive for Tagalog -in, instrumental passive for i-, and local passive for -an. -

A survey of 200 respondents in the Song district was conducted. To determine the objective eth- nolinguistic vitality, a structural analysis was performed on their sociolinguistic backgrounds. The results show the Iban language dominates in family, friend- ship, transactions, religious, employment, and education domains. The language use patterns show functional differentiation into the Iban language as the “low language” and Malay as the “high language”. The respondents have positive at- titudes towards the Iban language. The dimensions of language attitudes that are strongly positive are use of the Iban language, Iban identity, and intergenera- tional transmission of the Iban language. The marginally positive dimensions are instrumental use of the Iban language, social status of Iban speakers, and prestige value of the Iban language. Inferential statistical tests show that language atti- tudes are influenced by education level. However, language attitudes and useof the Iban language are not significantly correlated. By viewing language use and attitudes from the perspective of ethnolinguistic vitality, this study has revealed that a numerically dominant group assumed to be safe from language shift has only medium vitality, based on both objective and subjective evaluation. -

Tari Rawayan merupakan suatu tarian yang berisi wejangan kepada seluruh masyarakat khususnya pada masa pemerintahan bapak Soeharto dan ibu Tien bahwa dalam masa pembangunan yang sedang berlangsung ini, bapak Soeharto dan ibu Tien harus ingat dan hati-hati dalam mempertahankan nilai-nilai tradisi yang dimiliki bangsa Indonesia. Nilai-nilai tradisi tersebut adalah nilai-nilai kehati-hatian dalam bertindak akan segala sesuatu. Penelitian ini memfokuskan pada makna simbolis yang terkandung dalam tari Rawayan. Untuk menjawab permasalahan tersebut digunakan pendekatan hermeneutika dengan teori intensional Weber. Pendekatan hermeneutika membantu peneliti dalam memahami sisi historis dan humanistik dari latar belakang penciptaan tari Rawayan dan sosok Gugum Gumbira dalam menciptakan tari Rawayan. Teori intensional mengungkapkan bahwa makna hadir berdasarkan niat dan tujuan dari sang pencipta tari. Teori tersebut membantu memahami makna tersirat pada tari Rawayan yang terkandung
