Welcome Address

Dear Members, Colleagues and Friends,

The European Society for Sexual Medicine together with the European Federation of Sexology, the Turkish Society of Andrology and Turkish Association for Cognitive and Behavioral Psycho- therapies give a warm welcome to all congress participants. For the first time in their history, ESSM and EFS have organized their annual / biannual meetings as a joint congress. About two years ago, over a dinner, the two presidents of the ESSM and EFS gave birth to this joint congress through which our dreams and visions came true.

The advancing science of Sexual Medicine is mirrored in the scientific programs of the annual Hartmut Porst ESSM congresses, and both the country and the venue hosting this event traditionally contri- bute to the success of this congress. For four millennia, Istanbul as one of the world’s largest cities has been a cradle of many civilizations, a melting pot of different cultures and religions while integrating in an admirable and future-oriented way occidental and oriental history and traditions. Features and symbols of sexuality have been present for centuries across Anatolia and witnessed in books, shrines, statues and other cultural relics. We have no doubt that Istanbul, appointed as the cultural capital city of Europe in 2010, and sharing the spirit of old and new European and Asian cultures, will inspire the science of this congress.

We are very proud that we are able to offer you an innovative and attractive scientific program reflecting sexual problems of both sexes and beyond those addressing hot and sometimes controversial topics of sexuality. Many thanks to the chairs of the two scientific committees, Chiara Simonelli Andrea Salonia from ESSM and Salvatore Caruso from EFS for having developed such an ambitious and thoughtful scientific program, considering the latest and most exciting achie- vements in the field of Sexual Medicine. Finally not only the outstanding scientific program but also every single congress participant with their individual input will contribute to the success of this joint congress and make it an unforgettable and memorable venue for the whole Sexual Medicine community.

The mixture of pioneers and leaders as well as new upstarts in the field of Sexual Medicine longing for recognition, is the secret recipe of the permanent success of the ESSM congresses. In Istanbul, ESSM and EFS will continue with their traditional and successful strategies to share science-led and practice-oriented guidance in state-of-the-art lectures, master-lectures, roundtables, workshops, podium and poster sessions presented and moderated by renowned Ates Kadioglu experts and outstanding specialists in the field. As in the past we will accentuate the educa- tional program in this congress by offering our traditional ABC master course, running in pa- rallel to the scientific program, replenished by theme-oriented workshops jointly offered by ESSM and EFS. By tradition the ESSM and EFS congresses are not only the stage for high level science in Sexual Medicine and Sexology but also provide the opportunity to meet the old and to become acquainted with new friends. We are convinced that the spectacular and historical environment of the ancient city of Istanbul with its multicultural flare will cast a spell over you, your spouses and your friends while feeling the breeze through Bosphorus from Asia. Many thanks for joining us for this exciting congress and hope to enjoy unforgettable days with us in Istanbul.
