HIS EMINENCE GOMONSHU KOJUN OHTANI TO OFFICIATE KIKYOSHIKI CONFIRMATION RITES SEPTEMBER 5, 6, 10th, 2017 STATE OF HAWAII

The Confirmation or "Kikyoshiki" Rite is a solemn ceremony performed in the presence of Amida Buddha and Shinran Shonin. This ceremony formally confirms our entry onto the Nembutsu Pathway in to the Three Treasures of Buddha, Dharma and .

"Buddha" is not limited to the historical Sakyamuni Gotama Buddha, but to living in the wondrous flow of great compassion or Amida Buddha's Vow inspired by the life and teachings of Shinran. "Dharma" is the teachings of great compassion that do not discriminate against race, national ideology, gender or age embracing all without fail. Sangha refers to all peoples bound together by the all-emcompassing great compassion awakened in their entrusting hearts.

Participants to this Kikyoshiki will receive a Homyo or Dharma Name. This Name signifies one taking refuge in the Three Refuges. Thus each Dharma Name is joined by the prefix "Shaku" or Dharma aspirant of Sakyamuni and all Buddhas who host the virtues of great wisdom and compassion.

His Eminence Gomonshu Kojun Ohtani, Head Priest and spiritual head of the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-Ha world organization will officiate the Kikyoshiki Ceremony at three locations throughout the State of Hawaii:

HEADQUARTER’S UPDATE

Bishop Eric Matsumoto’s Report

It was Spring, but fluctuating temperatures made it an unusual year. On March 31, 2017, 2PM, the temperature was a very brisk 45 degrees and it was raining. The temple precinct was filled with a colorful sea of red, blue, lavender and light green umbrellas with the wisteria crests on them. However, the chilly weather did not dampen the enthusiasm of the 47 participants from or related to Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii including PBA who were attending the Accession Ceremony of His Eminence Kojun Ohtani, the 25th Spiritual Leader Gomonshu Sennyo Shonin being held at the Honzan (Nishi Hongwanji) in the ancient capital of Kyoto.

After the honor of having an audience and a special photo opportunity with His Eminence in the morning with Sangha members from Buddhist Churches of America and Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of Canada, our group hurried into the Buddha Hall to await the beginning of the Ceremony. The magnificently decorated altars dedicated to Amida Buddha and Shinran Shonin with richly brocaded altar cloths together with the beautiful music and melodic chanting soon mesmerized the congregation from Overseas and Japan which filled the two Main Halls of the Main Temple. One of the highlights of the Accession Ceremony was the special appearance of 3 generations of the Ohtani Family from His Eminence Koshin Ohtani, Monshu and Lady Noriko Ohtani, Urakata Emeritus, Gomonshu His Eminence Kojun Ohtani and Urakatasama Lady Ruzumi Ohtani and the children of the current Gomonshu and Urakatasama Takashi-sama and Akiko-sama towards the end of the Ceremony. They entered the spacious Halls together as a family and warmly greeted the congregation with smiles and such cordiality. It was especially touching to see Takashi-sama sitting next to his mother Lady Ruzumi Ohtani throughout the Service even chanting, to see Gomonshu Kojun Ohtani carry his children and Takashi-sama helping his little sister Akiko-sama by holding her hand. A feeling of warmth, joy and togetherness pervaded and for a moment everyone forgot the cold.

The warmth of Amida Buddha’s Compassion and the feeling of Sangha manifested by the Ohtani Family made the once-in-a-life time opportunity Accession Ceremony, a most memorable experience which will truly last a life time. The Accession Ceremony tells of a new era, a new beginning for Hongwanji. 4

THE JOURNEY-ITSELF IS THE GOAL - Part I By Bruce Y. Nakamura

Cultural To Spiritual

Despite the attrition rate of older memberships in our Hongwanji temples across the State of Hawaii, there are various Buddhist lineages thriving in America today. What comes to mind immediately of course are the Tibetan, Zen and meditation lineages of Samatha- Vipassana.

Possibly as not so obvious reasoning, may be that many Americans are attracted to said "monkish" lineages that promote a direct relationship with their teacher. On the other hand, most contract laborers who came over to work in the sugar, pineapple and coffee fields were from areas dominated by the Nishi Hongwanji - the western branch of Pure Land Japanese Buddhism. For the most part, all temple communities established were more directly concerned about sustaining a gathering place where cultural and ethnic values and practices could be maintained rather than directly growing the Pure Land Faith of Shinran Shonin to a wider society. Though on one hand, we find the first generation as the most devout and spiritual, on the other hand, many of the first and second generation also presumed all religious-spiritual matters, as the priests' (kuleana) affair.

Cloister ToTogetherness-Sharing

During this time of year, many Buddhist lineages focus on the Baby Buddha - Gotama Siddhartha's Birth. He became the enlightened one - Sakyamuni Buddha the historical founder of Buddhism over 2,600 years ago in ancient India. For our purpose of let us relook at a basic version outlining the Four Noble Truths and the Eight-fold Noble Pathway developed out of the Buddha's life and teachings. Please see the attachment, one of two parts entitled, "The Journey-Itself Is the Goal". Review and post it on your refrigerator and apply it daily. Remember as an outline, each system makes for continuous review, deeper refinement and practical applications.

Having directed our energies to early systems, let us also turn our attention to the Pure Land pathway inspired by Shinran Shonin (5/21/1173 - 1/16/1263). For all that is so selfless and virtuous in the early tradition and lineages, the vast majority of lay do not live out the monastic ideals of monks and nuns in cloister.

We are reminded of that amazing and wondrous event just short of a miracle known as human birth, so precious and rare that it arises out of living, growing, developing and maturing - accompanied by love-hate, kindness-selfishness, greed-ignorance, needs-desires, success- failure, gain-loss, happiness-sorrow and life-death witnessed and accompanied by family and community. It is this spirit of shared-togetherness of ordinary living that so characterizes, not only what it means to be truly human, but what the deep and abiding nature of spiritual life means for us as human beings after the life-teachings of Sakyamuni Buddha.

Though basic the Eight-fold Noble pathway is to early Buddhist idealism, the Pure Land teaching offers the depth and breath of limitless life's flow as a natural back-drop to life-seasons and the rhythms of life and death. Earlier systems of Buddhist thought, insight and practice can be broken down for us ordinary, everyday "Joes". This means all of life experiences can be interwoven into an orchestra of lived life experiences deeply enriching our common joys of happiness as well as our shared-sufferings and hardships as "true and real" - in other words in flow of great compassion. Part two explores the content and landscape of that human tapestry or orchestra. With guidance by Dr. Mark Unno, on that which is "true and real," we see that all is inseparable as one in our shared-joys as well as our common sorrows. Recent lectures and workshops led by Dr. Unno (son of Taitetsu & Alice Unno) as part of the Spring Buddhist Education Workshop and Public Lecture series on the Big Island inspired this writer's narrative: "...what had previously seemed unbearable becomes the very thing that re-connects us most deeply to those around us. It is our shared suffering as much as our mutual joy that we receive as the greatest gifts of this life journey..."

"The Buddhist Wheel, Vol. 57, #4, p. 1; Rev. Dr. Mark Unno; Excerpt and Adapted, 'Rhythms of Great Compassion: Seasons of Life &Death' "

I. FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS

1) Life is not without difficulties. We will not always get what we desire.

2) The basic cause of this difficulties is our self-attachment that is ever changing and impermanent.

3) There is a pathway by which we can become free of self-attachments.

4) This pathway is the Eight-fold Noble Path which brings true freedom from our cycle of attachments to bring peace and freedom - nirvana. 5

II. THE EIGHT-FOLD NOBLE PATH

1) Right Views- Understanding Basic Truths of human existence.

2) Right Thoughts give a moral-ethical basis for self-betterment.

3) Right Speech- Words Come From Our Thoughts.

4) Right Actions-Behavior Promote Personal-Social Interaction.

5) Right Living are Practices Benefitting Self-Others.

6) Right Effort- Is The Strength-Courage To Exert Ourselves.

7) Right Mindfulness Brings Focus On Importance of Consistency.

8) Right Meditation Is Compassion in Action To Self-Others.

Easter Egg Hunt

Peter Cottontail hurriedly hid his eggs in the preschool play ground. The scouts busily tried to follow his trail and scooped up as much plastic and real eggs as they could find. All scouts and siblings got to color their eggs too. It’s always a joy to see all their faces light up when they are having so much fun. In appreciation to Leanne Abe for allowing our pack to utilize their playground, Pack 12 donated 8 dozen boiled eggs to the preschool. Thank you Cub Master Glenn for boiling the 20 dozen eggs although not all survived and became sandwiches or pupu’s. Wink!

Kona District Pinewood Derby Race

Just like our own derby race all scouts needed to check in and register their cars before the race. The event started off with a flag ceremony and a presentation of a wooden pendant to each scout that participated. It was stressed to each scout that they have all earned a trophy already and that would be the Derby car they built. The races were divided by age groups and each scout had a chance to race 4 times. One of the best parts about the race, if any scout that was racing in the RED lane; he got to push the button to start the race.

Here are the results from our Pack: Kellen Kim: 3rd place Webelo division DJ Nonaka: 2nd place medal Bear division Ezra Green: 3rd place medal Wolf division. Kamuela Breeze: 3rd place medal Tiger division Rhian Dagdag: 2nd place medal Tiger division Kaius Beckett: 1st place medal Tiger division Elijah Green: 3rd place medal Lion division Tate Basque: 2nd place medal Lion division

The BEST part about the Pinewood Derby race: The scouts got to spend quality time with their dads or moms while building the cars!
