His given name was Matsuwakamaru . His loss of both parents at an early age moved him to enter the Buddhist priesthood at age 9. He studied for 20 years at Mt. Hiei, home of 3,000 monasteries enduring the most difficult of meditations and practices. This ceremony formally confirms our entry onto the Nembutsu Pathway in refuge to the Three Treasures of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. "Buddha" is not limited to the historical Sakyamuni Gotama Buddha, but to living in the wondrous flow of great compassion or Amida Buddha's Vow inspired by the life and teachings of Shinran. "Dharma" is the teachings of great compassion that do not discriminate against race, national ideology, gender or age embracing all without fail. Sangha refers to all peoples bound together by the all-emcompassing great compassion awakened in their entrusting hearts. Participants to this Kikyoshiki will receive a Homyo or Dharma Name. This Name signifies one taking refuge in the Three Refuges. Thus each Dharma Name is joined by the prefix "Shaku" or Dharma aspirant of Sakyamuni and all Buddhas who host the virtues of great wisdom and compassion. His Eminence Gomonshu Kojun Ohtani, Head Priest and spiritual head of the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-Ha world organization will officiate the Kikyoshiki Ceremony at three locations throughout the State of Hawaii: Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin at 398 Kilauea Avenue, Hilo, Hawaii On Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at 5:30pm., Ph: 961-6677 Wailuku Hongwanji Mission 1828 Vineyard Street, Wailuku, Maui On Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at 5:30pm., Ph: 244-0406 Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin 1727 Pali Highway, Honolulu, Oahu On Sunday, September 10, 2017 at 2:00pm., Ph: 536-7044 For inquiries, application forms, fees and deadlines, please contact your KHBT temple - 323-2993 at your earliest convenience. 3 Messages from President Morris Nagata By Mary Katayama Baccalaureate Service: High school seniors graduating this school year are invited to the annual Baccalaureate Service sponsored by the Jr.YBA. Special guest was Meg Greenwell to share information regarding her father Sherwood Greenwell, Kealakekua Ranch and the sandal wood carving of Amida Buddha on the altar. Visitation from Hongwanji Mission School: On March 28, 2017, 28 students (4th graders) accompanied by 2 teachers and 4 parents made their annual visit to KHBT. They visited our preschool, played with children in the playground and read to them in the classroom. We were informed that the 4th graders look forward to “crack and taste mac nuts”. This is a new experience for them. Students visiting from previous years shares the fun at the macadamia nut field. Mahalo Norman Takeoka and John Tsue for helping Morris at the nut field. Betty Takeoka and Shirley Matsuoka who helped Mary with refreshments, HEADQUARTER’S UPDATE Bishop Eric Matsumoto’s Report It was Spring, but fluctuating temperatures made it an unusual year. On March 31, 2017, 2PM, the temperature was a very brisk 45 degrees and it was raining. The temple precinct was filled with a colorful sea of red, blue, lavender and light green umbrellas with the wisteria crests on them. However, the chilly weather did not dampen the enthusiasm of the 47 participants from or related to Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii including PBA who were attending the Accession Ceremony of His Eminence Kojun Ohtani, the 25th Spiritual Leader Gomonshu Sennyo Shonin being held at the Honzan (Nishi Hongwanji) in the ancient capital of Kyoto. After the honor of having an audience and a special photo opportunity with His Eminence in the morning with fellow Sangha members from Buddhist Churches of America and Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of Canada, our group hurried into the Buddha Hall to await the beginning of the Ceremony.
