The following is an excerpt taken from the Senate Journal of the Legislature of the State of Nebraska Twentieth Regular Session held in Lincoln on January 4, 1887: “WHEREAS, There are many old soldiers in Nebraska who, from wounds or disabilities received while in the union army during the rebellion, are in the county poorhouses of this state; therefore be it RESOLVED, That it is the sense of this Senate that a suitable building be erected and grounds provided for the care and comfort of the old soldiers of Nebraska in their declining years; RESOLVED, That a committee of five be appointed to confer with a committee of the House on indigent soldiers and marines to take such action as will look to the establishment of a State Soldiers’ Home.” Legislative Bill 247 was passed on March 4, 1887 for the establishment of a soldiers’ home and the bill stipulated that not less than 640 acres be donated for the site. The Grand Island Board of Trade had a committee meeting with the citizens of Grand Island to secure funds to purchase land for the site of the home.

  • Study of Old Families of Center Line Pages
Study of old families of Center Line pages Using small print and single spacing the page numbers are 2331-2467 at moment When burials at St Clement and census data appear to match both are bolded. Red shows interesting data such as persons who are probably buried in St Clement Cemetery but who have no stone. This is a work in progress all censuses were not searched for every family. This at least gives St Clement Cemetery records and stones and Macomb County Death records thru 1917. In several cases misspellings and poor writing have led to not finding relatives on old censuses but here I have published several missing members found in other families. Many of these were children living in other families and both younger and older persons. Many were living in other families as helpers or servants. Unless noted occupation was usually farmer or housekeeping with “at home “ or “at school” for the children. This study is on going and notes received from local families will help. • Descendants of Georg Ludwig Riedesel (Ludwig Riddle/Radle)
Compiled by Dr. Paul Riedesel, Minneapolis Descendants of Georg Ludwig Riedesel (Ludwig Riddle/Radle) Generation 1 1. GEORG LUDWIG1 RIEDESEL was born on May 13, 1817 in Wunderthausen. He died on February 27, 1903 in Oxford, Warren, New Jersey (Hazen Cemetery, Warren County, NJ). He married (1) CAROLINE MATILDA SCHAEFFER about 1845 in probably New Jersey. She was born on August 16, 1824 in Germany. She died on October 27, 1867 in Oxford, Warren, New Jersey. He married (2) CATHERINE ?? about 1870. She was born in 1832 in Bavaria. She died before 1885 in Oxford, Warren, New Jersey. Notes for Georg Ludwig Riedesel: Georg Ludwig Riedesel was born May 13, 1817, in Wunderthausen in the house known as Wetzels. He was the eighth of nine recorded children of Johann Ludwig and Anna Elisabeth (Knoche) Riedesel. An older sister, Catherine, came to live in Warren County, New Jersey in 1837. Ludwig's application for naturalization states that he arrived in 1841 and that is the year he received permission to emigrate. He married Caroline Schaeffer (probably Schäfer) around 1845. She was born August 16, 1824 in Germany. One source gives Wunderthausen as her place of birth but this is incorrect. No Schäfer daughter is recorded in the birth records at this time--and no Schäfer family even lived in the village. Nor were they married there. Several of the Riedesels who settled in Warren County came to be known as Riddle or Radle. It's not that there weren't other Germans around who could pronounce (and spell) Riedesel correctly, but this seemed to be the rule.

Some of the material from the O’Connell History will be repeated for the purpose of continuity, but the emphasis will be on Gottlieb and his ancestors. New material concerning his life in the United States will also be included. Some of this new history will be concerned with his early life, and the life of his descendants in New Jersey. 2.
