Relying on a teaching of Rav Soloveitchik and another from Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, Zac’s dvar Torah taught us in a world gone mad with baseless hatred, Noach stayed above the fray just by keeping to himself. By doing absolutely nothing. Neither a leader nor a chochum, Noach’s righteousness came from being a loner, from doing and saying nothing. The least worst man standing. Hashem picked Noach simply because he was not as bad as everyone else. No words beat bad words. That’s it. Noach toiled for years building the ark. And the people mocked and ridiculed him. Noach ignored them and carried on. Their bad words poured on and eventually, so did the flood. Had Noach’s righteousness manifest itself by speaking out against baseless hatred maybe he could have stopped their bad words and averted the flood. One lone voice against the collective. Easier said than done. Words matter. Good words can build and unite. Bad words, or even no words, can destroy. Let’s all choose our words wisely. Next week, please share in our joy and pride as Zac celebrates his Tekes Kumta and receives his camouflage Kfir brigade beret. Parents normally drop everything to attend. This year, the ceremonies are closed to guests, even parents, due to COVID. While we can only celebrate with Zac via Zoom, we look forward to celebrating right here in Thornhill with you, our friends and neighbors. Shabbat Shalom. Jeffrey Brown Weekly Halachah - R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected] Am I obligated to daven from a siddur? Part 1: There is no obligation to daven from a siddur. However, a siddur enables the fulfillment of various obligations while davening, for shemoneh esreih as well as for other parts of the davening. These include: For general davening: 1) One must daven with attention to the meaning of the words, and using a siddur aids in maintaining that focus. At the minimum, this applies to shemoneh esreih, Shema and birkat hamazon after meals. (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 98; Mishneh Berurah 93:2, 185:1) 2) One must pronounce the words of shemoneh esreih and biblical passages properly, and using an accurate siddur helps with that. (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 101:2; Mishneh Berurah 93:2) 3) One must avoid visual distractions during Shema and shemoneh esreih, and using a siddur helps with that. (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 90:5, 90:21; Taz 90:5) 4) We are not permitted to recite biblical verses by heart, other than verses that are so common that everyone is fluent in their words. (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 49:1) 5) The chazan must daven with awe for the congregation, and using a siddur aids in maintaining that focus. (Mishneh Berurah 53:87) 6) When reciting pitum haketoret there is a special requirement to avoid skipping any words, and using a siddur helps with that (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 132:2) For shemoneh esreih, specifically: 7) When shemoneh esreih includes unfamiliar insertions, we are obligated to prepare in advance, but using a siddur mitigates that concern. (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 100:1) 8) During the repetition of the amidah, we are supposed to follow along with the chazan’s words; using a siddur helps with that. (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 124:4; Mishneh Berurah 96:9) To be continued… ANNOUNCEMENTS BAYT MISSION STATEMENT BAYT is an inclusive shul community, committed to the principles of Orthodox Judaism, embracing G-d, Torah and Israel while inspiring spiritual growth.
