PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Seven years ago, we celebrated our Zac’s bar mitzvah. Relying on a teaching of Rav Soloveitchik and another from Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, Zac’s dvar Torah taught us in a world gone mad with baseless hatred, Noach stayed above the fray just by keeping to himself. By doing absolutely nothing. Neither a leader nor a chochum, Noach’s righteousness came from being a loner, from doing and saying nothing. The least worst man standing. Hashem picked Noach simply because he was not as bad as everyone else. No words beat bad words. That’s it.

Noach toiled for years building the ark. And the people mocked and ridiculed him. Noach ignored them and carried on. Their bad words poured on and eventually, so did the flood. Had Noach’s righteousness manifest itself by speaking out against baseless hatred maybe he could have stopped their bad words and averted the flood. One lone voice against the collective. Easier said than done.

Words matter. Good words can build and unite. Bad words, or even no words, can destroy. Let’s all choose our words wisely.

Next week, please share in our joy and pride as Zac celebrates his Tekes Kumta and receives his camouflage Kfir brigade beret. Parents normally drop everything to attend. This year, the ceremonies are closed to guests, even parents, due to COVID. While we can only celebrate with Zac via Zoom, we look forward to celebrating right here in Thornhill with you, our friends and neighbors.

Shabbat Shalom.

Weekly Halachah - R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected]

Am I obligated to daven from a siddur? Part 1:

There is no obligation to daven from a siddur. However, a siddur enables the fulfillment of various obligations while davening, for shemoneh esreih as well as for other parts of the davening. These include:

For general davening: 1) One must daven with attention to the meaning of the words, and using a siddur aids in maintaining that focus. At the minimum, this applies to shemoneh esreih, Shema and birkat hamazon after meals. (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 98; Mishneh Berurah 93:2, 185:1) 2) One must pronounce the words of shemoneh esreih and biblical passages properly, and using an accurate siddur helps with that. (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 101:2; Mishneh Berurah 93:2) 3) One must avoid visual distractions during Shema and shemoneh esreih, and using a siddur helps with that. (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 90:5, 90:21; Taz 90:5) 4) We are not permitted to recite biblical verses by heart, other than verses that are so common that everyone is fluent in their words. (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 49:1) 5) The chazan must daven with awe for the congregation, and using a siddur aids in maintaining that focus. (Mishneh Berurah 53:87) 6) When reciting pitum haketoret there is a special requirement to avoid skipping any words, and using a siddur helps with that (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 132:2)

For shemoneh esreih, specifically: 7) When shemoneh esreih includes unfamiliar insertions, we are obligated to prepare in advance, but using a siddur mitigates that concern. (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 100:1) 8) During the repetition of the amidah, we are supposed to follow along with the chazan’s words; using a siddur helps with that. (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 124:4; Mishneh Berurah 96:9)

STATEMENT FROM KOLLEL OHR YOSEPH (KOY) AND BAYT

Kollel Ohr Yoseph (KOY) and BAYT, with the assistance of the Jewish Legacy Charitable Foundation, entered into negotiations this past summer for the purpose of constructing a new home for KOY in the BAYT’s Chuppah Garden. Ultimately, as the negotiations ensued, it became apparent to all parties that we’d be unable to successfully bring a deal to fruition.

We wish to underscore that at no time in the past or present have there been any bad feelings between our two organizations. To the contrary, we harbour a mutual love and respect for each other, both as individuals and as representatives of our respective communities. The BAYT and Kollel communities share great mutual appreciation for each other’s contribution to the Thornhill Jewish community. We are proud to work side by side for the betterment of the Kehillah as a whole. Our organizations will continue to on projects for the Tzibur as the opportunities arise. We wish for each other “שכנים טובים” collaborate as nothing but continued success and growth.

BAYT and KOY are united in expressing our Hakaras Hatov to Jack Feintuch, Yaakov Kaplan, and the Jewish Legacy Charitable Foundation for their efforts in furthering an ambitious vision for the future of our community. We also express our gratitude to the Foundation for its generous support of both organizations.

May Hashem grant us success in all our future endeavours and allow the Kollel and the BAYT to together go "MiChayil el Chayil" – from strength to everlasting strength, ad bias Goel Tzedek.

Every week more and more of our members are stepping up to assist us in the Crisis Campaign. Many of you inspire us, not only with your generosity but your very kind words. This past week a donor wrote us, “when the shul community suffers, we all suffer”. There is very little to add when a member truly understands the seriousness of our financial situation and want to make a difference.

The fundraising committee is working very hard to ensure that we not only meet the goals we have set out to raise, but that we are making sure your donation dollars are being used correctly. When you pledge, we see it as vote of confidence in our committee. We are truly grateful.

For those of you still considering to pledge or are waiting for a phone call, please be proactive. The fundraising committee is working diligently to get to all of our members, but if you want to discuss your pledge or have questions, please reach out to us.

DVAR TORAH FOR PARSHAS NOACH

In this week's parsha, Hashem commands Noach to build a Teivah. The world was full of violence and corruption, and that was why Hashem was going to wipe everything out with a giant flood. The rain fell for 40 days and 40 nights; Hashem had Noach gather all the animals in the world so they could be saved. Before the start of the flood, people teased Noach and insulted him, saying that it was foolish of him to build a Teivah and to waste all that wood. But right when the flood started getting really bad, people ran to Noach, pleading with him to let them onto his Teivah. But it was too late; Hashem had sealed off the doors already. While the Teivah drifted up, a giant named Og grabbed onto the Teivah and held on tightly. Where do we see a hint to this in the Torah? Stay tuned and you will see in a sec. A few days later, Noach and his family were feeding the animals. When Noach got to the lion's cage, the lion bit his leg because it was upset that it had not been fed fast enough. The lion was used to getting food fast, so it was no אך surprise that this happened. Rashi says that this event is learned out from the words in the pasuk when it talks about who survived the mabul. Remember Og? Where is theנח isאך נח hint that he stowed away on the Teivah? CHECK THIS OUT! The gematria of !the stowaway, is 76 tooעוג and the gematria of 76
