High-end restaurants have gone from being predominantly French or British throughout the 20th century to depicting today a distinctive Irish tone. I have referred to this fashion as new Irish cuisine (NIC), a concept that attempts to enclose all fine-dining ventures that serve modern Irish food in Ireland and their common cooking ethos. This research has aimed to investigate thoroughly the nature of this culinary identity from a Bourdieuian perspective and to contextualize its emergence. -

Delmonico’s is widely considered the first restaurant in America. During its lifetime, Delmonico’s earned international acclaim for its classical French cuisine and excellent service. This thesis traces Delmonico’s almost century- long history, from its beginnings in 1827 through 1848, its golden era until 1896, and its downfall in the 1920s. By combining both business and social history, this thesis argues for Delmonico’s rightful place in the historical record and explains why the restaurant model developed by Delmonico’s was successful. To achieve this result, many primary sources, including memoirs, cookbooks written by former Delmonico’s chefs, and a plethora of newspaper articles are analyzed. The word ‘reformation’ was widely used during these centuries, but its meaning changed in significant ways. By adopting a linguistic methodology, the dissertation studies reformation as a concept in motion; consequently, the English Reformation, a term widely used today, is treated not as an analytic category but as a historiographical label that developed contingently. The chapters fall into three roughly equal sections, each of which covers a distinct discourse of reformation. Chapters one and two cover the first discourse, which identified reformation as the work of a church council. This discourse began at the Council of Constance (1414 – 1418) and remained firmly in place in all Christian localities through the mid-sixteenth century, when it was challenged by a new discourse: reformation by armed resistance, which is introduced at the end of chapter two and discussed in chapters three and four. -

R. McCone August 2006 2 Abstract This study provides a survey of the constructions of verbal nouns with prep- ositions that are used in a significant way, such as creating syntactic and semantic contexts not found with ordinary nouns. Particular emphasis is placed on constructions serving to denote tense, mood and aspect. Also some syntactic contexts involving verbal nouns as objects are examined. This ma- terial has been collected primarily from Old and Middle Irish texts, but some reference is made to Modern Irish where this seems helpful in order to illus- trate developments. The observations made are compared to findings on the use of verbal nouns in a closely related language, Middle Welsh, and an unrelated, non-Indo-European language, Basque. The discussion of the Me- dieval Irish material is followed by the evaluation of an illustrative corpus of Middle Welsh data and available descriptions of Welsh verbal nouns. Paral- lel constructions in these Insular Celtic languages are then brought together in order to assess which prepositional verbal noun constructions might have been a feature of Insular Celtic. Data from Basque is compared to the find- ings for Insular Celtic. The results seek to identify the language specific features of Old Irish verbal nouns and a common core of verbal noun usage in Insular Celtic as opposed to other usages adopted by a non-Indo-European sample language. -
