By looking at things such as the food, décor, and dancing at these balls, historians could arrive at an understanding of how the Four Hundred wanted to be perceived by others as well as the various types of capital these elites exhibited to assert their claim as the leaders of upper-class New York. In addition, in the process of advancing their claims as the rightful leaders of Society, the New York Four Hundred transformed elite identity as well as upper-class masculinity to include competitiveness and even fitness and vigorousness, traits that once applied more exclusively to white middle-class masculinity. -

High-end restaurants have gone from being predominantly French or British throughout the 20th century to depicting today a distinctive Irish tone. I have referred to this fashion as new Irish cuisine (NIC), a concept that attempts to enclose all fine-dining ventures that serve modern Irish food in Ireland and their common cooking ethos. This research has aimed to investigate thoroughly the nature of this culinary identity from a Bourdieuian perspective and to contextualize its emergence. -

It is about class, consumption and culture; it is also about food and identity. In the mid-nineteenth century, restaurants served French food prepared by European chefs to elite Americans with aristocratic pretensions. “Turning the Tables” explores the subsequent transformation of aristocratic restaurants into public spaces where the middle classes could feel comfortable dining. Digging deeply into the changes restaurants underwent at the turn of the century, I argue that the struggles over restaurant culture—the battles over the French-language menu, the scientific eating movement, the celebration of cosmopolitan cuisines, the growing acceptance of unescorted women diners, the failed attempts to eliminate tipping—offer evidence that the urban middle class would play a central role in the construction of twentieth-century American culture. -

DEAR BOOK CLUB FRIENDS, Thank you so much for selecting The Social Graces for your book club discussion. I’d like to personally welcome you to the opulence and splendor of the Gilded Age, which in my opinion is one of the most fascinating chapters in America’s history. This is actually the second time I’ve written in this time period. The first was in my 2014 novel, What the Lady Wants, which focused on the retail tycoon Marshall Field during Chicago’s Gilded Age. Now, in The Social Graces, we turn our attention to New York City and the larger-than-life women who ran society. The Industrial Revolution of the late nineteenth century and the ending of the Civil War created immense fortunes for individuals and families who were either rooted in or had relocated to New York City. Within this immense pool of wealth there were two distinct groups: the original settlers of New York, known as the Knickerbockers or colloquially the old money, and the emerging merchants and industrialists known as the nouveau riche or the new money. Never shall the twain meet! At least that was the cry of the Knickerbockers who did everything in their power to keep the nouveau riche out of high society. Caroline Astor, commonly referred to as The Mrs. Astor, was the reigning queen of the Knickerbockers and therefore of New York society. Her rival, Alva Vanderbilt, represented the nouveau riche. The Social Graces is their story and their battle for control of society. Based on true events, it’s a rich story (pun intended) filled with gos- sip, scandal and ladies behaving badly.
