Most golfers seem to cling to the old cliché, “it’s not the fiddle, but the fiddler who’s to blame.” Over the years I have been asked all too often if equipment makes a difference. The answer is “yes” — but only if it’s the right equipment.

Irons A hook or slice with your irons can be attributed to the lie angle of the club at impact. To figure this out, I place tape on the sole (bottom) of the club and have my students hit a ball off of a fiberglass lie board. If the mark on the tape is near the heel, the club’s lie angle is too upright, likely causing the ball to fly to the left. If the mark is near the toe, the club’s lie angle is too flat, likely making the ball fly to the right. A properly fitted will leave a mark near the center of the club’s sole.

Driver How far your ball travels with your driver is directly dependent on how much the ball spins. Golfers with different swing speeds will benefit from different spin rates. I recently ordered a new driver because the spin rate on my old one was too high, both on center and slightly off- center hits. With my new driver, my spin rate has now been optimized, resulting in 15-20 more yards off the .

So if you would like for me to take a look at your equipment — or answer any questions you might have about how you should equip your game — please let me know.

I hope to see you at Sports Park soon!
