Near the end of winter and looking forward to spring. COVID-19 vaccines are H rolling out and millions have already received their vaccinations or know their turn is soon to come. This issue of JPAC includes a chronicle of COVID-19 events during 2020 and the pandemic’s impact on Amish communities, as seen through mass media coverage aggregated on Erik Wesner’s Amish America website. Woven through his account are about 90 links to news sources organized around themes such as public health outreach to Amish communities, public perceptions—pro and con—of the Amish response to the virus, COVID-19 cases among the Amish, and others. Wesner’s article is must reading for anyone interested in the impact of COVID- 19 on the Amish, on media coverage of Plain communities, and on the nuanced and diverse reactions of the Amish to the pandemic. In addition, this issue’s “Fieldwork and Reflections” section includes the observations of Victor Stoltzfus on COVID-19 and the large Elkhart- LaGrange Amish settlement in northern Indiana. (We expect to include more COVID-related articles in the next issue of JPAC, vol. 2, no. 1, Summer 2021.) Beyond the pandemic, this issue includes a number of articles that will delight aficionados of population studies and those “eggheads” among us who love statistics. -

The world is still facing war and rumor of war. Though nearly forty years have passed us by, the Wagoners' report radiates a timely hope for an answer that "takes away the occasion for war." Previously, we have been able to write only in briefest summary of the Primavera decades. This report will surely warm the hearts of all who experienced that period of our history. To those with no experience of it, we hope to give a glimpse and at least some understanding of that time. CHAPTER 1 Cathedrals, Churches, Caves Notes on Architecture, History, and Worship he layers of history, the ways the past persists, are easier to see Tin the Old World, where the irony of ancient towers juxtaposed against tattoo parlors and multinational fast-food outlets is inescapable. The smooth and rough children of western Europe at the millennium, in their black designer dresses or their spiked hair and pierced eyebrows, do not spend nights arguing infant baptism, the uses of the sword, or the perils and advantages of a state church, as my ancestors did during the Anabaptist Reformation of 1525. If today’s citizens were to meet to study the New Testament and reach conclusions about its meaning contrary to those of the state church, the worst they would suffer is ridicule. When my wife Marlyce and I crossed ancient European borders no one asked about our passports, let alone our religion; as long as our cash and credit cards held out, we were free as any bird. So we went our quiet way across Holland and France and Switzerland and Ger- many, sometimes simple travelers enjoying the food and the sights, sometimes pilgrims in pursuit of the strange, small traces of our past. We call ourselves Mennonites now, but our people have claimed and been given many names in the last five centuries, as they wandered over Europe and then to many parts of the world in search of places where they might work out their particular, pecu- liar version of the gospel. 5 6 Scattering Point We were in Europe for three weeks, hardly time to discover anything. -

DeWeese-Boyd: The Nurturing Communities Project The Nurturing Communities Project: Fostering Persistence and Emergence in Intentional Christian Communities By Margie DeWeese-Boyd The concept, praxis, and experience of “community” in America have arguably been stretched thin so as to no longer signify anything substantial. Many, in fact, decry the demise of community even as “buy local” campaigns and the locavore food movement try to reclaim some of its lost ground. Bill McKibben, for instance, bemoans the growing dispersion and disconnection that characterizes a good deal of American life today: “We change religions, spouses, towns, professions with ease … [w]e are not just individualists; we are hyper-individualists.”1 Ours is a culture that readily severs ties, even as it suffers the ramifications of those various dislocations. This American life is a life dispersed: we work ten miles away with people who live twenty miles beyond that, buy food grown a thousand miles away from grocery clerks who live in a different subdivision, date people from the other side of town, and worship with people who live an hour’s drive from one another.… We serve soup to the poor folks on the other side of the tracks, but we don’t know the person on the other side of our fence. -

Eerst volgt de lijst die ontleent is aan Van Braght zijn boeken, daarna de naamlijst die samengesteld is door C. Kraybill. Kraybill schrijft: Het totale aantal Doopsgezinde martelaren is onbekend. Het bijhouden van gegevens in de verschillende regio's van het Europa van de 16e eeuw was inconsistent. In sommige gebieden werden verslagen bijgehouden maar gingen later verloren of vernietigd. In andere gebieden werden er in de eerste plaats geen records bijgehouden. Er zijn ook plaatsen waar we alleen nummers of namen van martelaren hebben zonder verdere details. De meest uitgebreide martelaarsinformatie die vandaag beschikbaar is, komt uit Vlaanderen en Nederland. Dit betekent niet dat meer mensen op die plaatsen werden gemarteld dan elders. -

6TH MAY 2020 Forgotten Victims from the Age of Atrocity Professor Alec Ryrie This last lecture of this series on religious atrocities in the age of the Reformation and the religious wars, is about victims who were denied the limelight, who did not receive the full on-stage treatment in their own time. One of the features of atrocities that we have seen again and again is that not all victims are equal. Some – only a few, really – of those who died untimely deaths in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries died in just such a way that their deaths were useful to their contemporaries and successors; they could be made into myths, they helped to populate the world with heroes and villains, to warn successive generations against lowering their guard, or to train them in self-sacrificial virtue, or to remind them of why some truths could never be compromised. Meanwhile, most of the dead were passed over in silence because no-one, or not enough people, had a point they wanted to use them to make. A single death is a tragedy, Stalin supposedly said, and a million deaths are a statistic: but neither is an atrocity, not until someone makes it one, by deciding who needs to be celebrated, who needs to be blamed, and what lessons the survivors and successors of the dead should draw. And as we have also seen throughout this series, the making of atrocities never stands still. Some atrocities fade into memory, like the St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre. Atrocities that were once terrifying become the stuff of jokes, like the Spanish Inquisition. -

It argues that the separatist heritage of Plain Anabaptism exemplified by PVC represents a viable missionary ecclesiology for an increasingly postmodern context. Most Plain Anabaptist groups have seen considerable growth in recent years, due partly to procreation rates and retention of youth. -

Stories to Sustain a Peace Church Aldred Neufeldt with Tim Schmucker and Harold Thiessen Texts: Romans 12:19-21; Matthew 5:38-48 Today we celebrate Peace Sunday. It’s also Remembrance Day. It first was called Armistice Day when, exactly 100 years ago – on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month – a treaty ended the Great War– a war to end all wars, as some called it. Throughout the war both opposing forces told their citizens that God was on their side. By its end at least 10 million combatants died – two times as many were injured. And then there were the millions of civilian deaths – 40 million died in all, are the statistics I’ve seen. These deaths are remembered today in Canada – beginning at our memorials in France. Who here has visited Beaumont-Hamel and Vimy Ridge? You walk on Canadian soil when you’re there – land bequeathed by France – so Canada’s first Remembrance Day celebration today took place there. It’s profoundly moving to walk amongst the graves, thousands of them, row on row, the figure of a weeping woman looking over the field of dead below. Guides speak poignantly to what happened – and, if you listen to the subtext, you can’t help but conclude that war is a stupid way to solve problems. To me, a visit there underscored how important our Anabaptist peace witness is. At the end of that ugly time there was little appetite for war – mostly grief and remembering – and a call to end all wars. -
