Just as the jazz discourse from the 1930s had been growing out of a will to define a pure and authentic jazz, that was to be separated from other forms of popular music – and put on display under the jazz moniker (see Dunkel’s paper in this volume), it was important for jazz research to focus on jazz per se. This can be seen as an embodiment of the dominant jazz discourse among researchers, that gave them credibility with the leading jazz critics (even when the two categories did not actually combine), but also as a strategy within the wider field of music research; if jazz was to be promoted as a subject of serious research, it was important that the jazz tradition was taken as a given, an autonomous phenomenon worthy of study in itself. After all, this was the dominant way of doing musicology – defining and delimiting a form, selecting the most important lives, works, and epochs, and studying them as rather autonomous entities, relating them more to one another than to ‘outside’ factors. Today, jazz is accepted as a legitimate research subject on par with classical music (although funding for such research probably shows differences). However, there have been many new questions raised within musicology – and the cultural study of music in general, as an effect of various theoretical contributions to the field. For one thing, distinctions between genres is no longer taken for granted; rather, researchers explore how genre borders are built and retained, how status and attention are awarded and distributed, and how this affects the socio-economical conditions for the music, and directly results in changes in the music. The inner dynamics of Western classical music, jazz, and other genres is still an 5 important subject. After all, even if genre labels are of limited value as concepts for the analysis of music, they are still a social fact since the safeguarding of genre borders is performed and lived by people investing emotions, efforts, and economical resources into keeping them very much at work. However, there are other questions, themes, and perspectives that can contribute to a deeper understanding of jazz. These include the physical conditions affecting the existence of jazz in society, the variety of meanings ascribed to it, other uses and functions, or the practices of musicians and the resulting sound. And, some of these questions cannot be posed with a presupposition that jazz should have a privileged position, nor indeed that the concept of genres should be a relevant factor at all. But broader perspectives like ‘race and music,’ ‘emotions in music,’ and ‘what type of music constitutes popular music,’ can very easily lead back to issues of genres such as jazz, through questions such as: are these topics taken up in similar ways in different genres? Or, is there perhaps a functional cleavage between genres? Has one specific genre become the conduit for this issue? If so, has this affected the genre, and how? Has this phenomenon reinforced or destabilized the genre? For the 10th Nordic Jazz Research Conference in 2012, the terms gender and authenticity were chosen by the organizing committee as relevant themes around which to gather discussion. The call for papers received a response beyond the committee’s expectations and hopes – the response from countries outside the Nordic region was surprisingly strong. Unfortunately, not all of the proposals could be accepted, due to the restricted time and space available for the conference. Gender… There seems to be a general pattern in how gender issues have been introduced and developed within different spheres of culture studies during the last decades of the twentieth century.1 Initial works set out to establish a complete picture by focusing attention on the marginalized and omitted women, often in historical revisions with ‘there have also been female…’ as a leading principle. The next step has been to question the system of inclusion and exclusion of forms and genres, and roles, within a hegemonic system. This approach often revealed how genres, considered 6 to be ‘minor’ or insufficient, have been those available to women (as performers or audience members). Likewise, the distribution of roles, differentiated in music production and consumption has been studied, often finding women active in less visible roles that are, nevertheless, crucial to the process. Here, inspiration has often come from anthropological cross-cultural studies of gendered divisions.2 Yet another perspective includes a closer study of cultural works from the analytical traditions of semiotics and/or discourse, and poses questions of how gender is represented, constructed, refracted, and negotiated through both the individual work, and a conglomeration of works. That is, art works are not simply products of a system of gendered differences, but are studied as one of the forces that produce and reinforce gender differences. A wider perspective includes not only the music, but also aspects of performance, both on and off stage, as well as speaking and writing about jazz, and performative aspects of masculinity and femininity. It should be pointed out that these steps are not phases that succeed one another in some kind of developmental scheme, but are rather a model of how definition, expansion, and re-definition create the growth of a field. The introduction of new ideas and perspectives doesn’t necessarily make the previous questions and tasks invalid, although they may have to be refined and restated in more complex ways. Jazz studies have followed this pattern fairly well. Two ground-breaking surveys from the 1980s, one by Sally Placksin and one by Linda Dahl, focused on how women had been marginalized. The studies took the first compensatory steps by bringing some prominent musicians to the forefront.3 Some biographies have followed, celebrating musicians such as Lillian Hardin Armstrong, Hazel Scott, Valaida Snow, and Mary Lou Williams, thus countering the tendency of historical writing that neglects women.4 Sherrie Tucker’s study of all-girl bands during the 1930s and ‘40s was important in revealing how there can be, even in a male- dominated genre, quite large spaces for women. But here, it becomes evident how the writing of history tends to favor the ‘name’ bands and individuals, and how the permanent, rather than the temporary structures ÷ the long careers rather than the short and disrupted ones ÷ are put in focus.5 If the field is widened to also include women as composers, arrangers, fans, critics, photographers, and patrons 7 ÷ the roles that in jazz discourses often are subordinated to the roles of musicians and record producers ÷ the gendered complexity of jazz becomes clearer and, at least somewhat, reduces the impression of jazz as an ‘all-male’ phenomenon.6 Even so, male dominance is not just a matter of men outnumbering women, but also a question of how masculinity is taken to be the norm. Some recent studies have explored how masculinity is constructed in jazz and how, and why, such constructions are taken for granted as intrinsic values of jazz.7 That this masculine hegemony also presupposes a heteronormative sexuality has had a strong repressive effect; the experiences of homosexuals, bisexuals, transsexuals, and cross-dressers, have only fairly recently been possible to speak of.8 Since jazz studies is a marginal field in musicology, as is gender studies, there is still much work to be done, even on the basic level of identifying and describing female jazz musicians.

JH’s playing with Duke Ellington, as well as numerous swing recording sessions made an unforgettable impression on me and my friends. It is time to go through his works and organize a solography! Early history: Played drums and piano, then sax at the age of 14; through his sister, he got to know Sidney Bechet, who gave him lessons. He followed Bechet in Willie ‘The Lion’ Smith’s quartet at the Rhythm Club (ca. 1924), then played with Bechet at the Club Basha (1925). Continued to live in Boston during the mid -1920s, travelling to New York for week-end ‘gigs’. Played with Bobby Sawyer (ca. 1925) and Lloyd Scott (ca. 1926), then from late 1926 worked regularly with Chick webb at Paddock Club, Savoy Ballroom, etc. Briefly with Luckey Roberts’ orchestra, then joined Duke Ellington in May 1928. A flow of adventurous, eclectic albums followed throughout the decade, many featuring his quartet with saxophonist Azar Lawrence, including 's Song for My Lady, 's Enlightenment, and 's Atlantis. Throughout his career, Tyner continued to push himself, arranging for his big band and releasing Grammy-winning albums with 's Blues for Coltrane: A Tribute to John Coltrane and 's The Turning Point.     Rune Gustafssons arkiv Svenskt visarkiv April 2013 Leif Larsson INLEDNING Rune Gustafsson ( 1933 – 2012 ) hörde sedan början av 1950-talet till en av Sveriges allra främsta jazzmusiker. Han började sin karriär hos trumslagaren Nils-Bertil Dahlander i Göteborg men flyttade några år senare till Stockholm. Under nästan hela fortsatta 1950-talet spelade han där tillsammans med Putte Wickman. Rune träffade 1959 Arne Domnérus som han sedan samarbetade med i många olika sammanhang. Under ett par årtionden var Rune Gustafsson en av våra mest anlitade studiomusiker som genom sin mångsidighet och flexibilitet passade in i de flesta situationer. Rune Gustafsson har bakom sig en rad egna skivor, bl. a. ”Move” som belönades med Orkesterjournalens Gyllene Skiva. Han har även varit involverad i flera andra produktioner som tilldelats denna utmärkelse. Under åren har RG samarbetat med en rad av jazzens internationella storheter, såsom Benny Carter, George Russel, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz och Zoot Sims. Med den sistnämnde gjorde Rune två skivor, den sista ”In A Sentimental Mood” kom att bli Zoot Sims allra sista. Med sin mångsidighet har Rune också varit efterfrågad i många andra musikaliska sammanhang, både i Sverige och stora delar av världen, t.ex. Eng- land, USA, Sydamerika, Ryssland, Japan och Kina. 1997 erhöll Rune det allra första priset ur Albin Hagströms minnesfond i Kungliga musikaliska akademien med motiveringen: ”För en mer än fyrtiofemårig gärning som framstående jazzsolist och mångsidig studio musiker – en beundrad förebild och outtömlig inspirationskälla för generationer svenska elgitarrister. 1998 fick Rune Gustafsson Thore Ehrlings stipendium med motiveringen: ”En av de mångsidigaste musikerna inom svensk populärmusik och vår genom tiderna främste jazzgitarrist”.

This document examines Schoenfield’s characteristic techniques of recasting and redirecting preexisting musical materials through diverse musical styles, genres, and influences as a coherent compositional method. I call this method ‘refraction’, taking the term from the first of the pieces I analyze here: Refractions, a trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano written in 2006, which centers on melodies from Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro). I will also trace the ‘refraction’ method through Sha’atnez, a trio for Violin, Cello and Piano (2013), which is based on two well-known melodies: “Pria ch’io l’impegno” from Joseph Weigl’s opera L’amor marinaro, ossia il corsaro (also known as the “Weigl tune,” best known for its appearance in the third movement of Beethoven’s Trio for Piano, Clarinet, and Cello in B-flat Major, Op.11 (‘Gassenhauer’)); and the Russian-Ukrainian folk song “Dark Eyes (Очи чёрные).” By tracing the ‘refraction’ method as it is used to generate these two works, this study offers a unified approach to understanding Schoenfield’s compositional process; in doing so, the study both makes his music more accessible for scholarly examination and introduces enjoyable new works to the chamber music repertoire.

    Sweden Douze pointe Af Henrik Smith-Sivertsen Hvorfor er svenskerne så gode? Det er et irriterende faktum, at vores svenske broderfolk i såvel Melodi Grand Prix som i bred popmusik-sammenhæng distancerer Danmark med mange mulehår. De første år af Grand Prixets historie var vi faktisk et godt stykke foran Sverige med Grethe og Jørgen Ingmanns sejr i 1963 som klimakset, men fra da af og frem til Brødrene Olsens sejr i netop Sverige i 2000 var det svenskerne, der løb med det hele. I denne artikel vil jeg forsøge at besvare dette store spørgsmål ved at gå historisk til værks. Stop mens legen er god og Waterloo 2 forskellige scenarier fra fortiden: Scenarie 1 Den 6. Marts 1966 deltog Ulla Pia som den danske repræsentant ved det internationale Melodi Grand Prix i Luxembourg med ”Stop mens legen er god”. Titlen skulle vise sig at være nærmest profetisk, da Danmarks Radios nytiltrådte TV-underholdningschef Niels-Jørgen Kaiser godt tre måneder senere offentliggjorde sin beslutning om, at Danmark ikke længere ville være med i sangkonkurrencen. This jazz dialect was developed in the decade following the Nazi occupation of Norway, when Norwegians utilized jazz as a subtle tool of resistance to Nazi cultural policies. This dialect was further enriched through the Scandinavian residencies of African American free jazz pioneers Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, and George Russell, who tutored Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek. Garbarek is credited with codifying the “Nordic sound” in the 1960s and ‘70s through his improvisations on numerous albums released on the ECM label. Throughout this document I will define, describe, and contextualize this sound concept. Today, the Nordic sound is embraced by Norwegian musicians and cultural institutions alike, and has come to form a significant component of modern Norwegian artistic identity. This document explores these dynamics and how they all contribute to a Norwegian jazz scene that continues to grow and flourish, expressing this jazz identity in a world marked by increasing globalization.

    Jakob Bro (1978) is a Danish guitar player and composer living in Copenhagen, Denmark. He is a former member of Paul Motian & The Electric Bebop Band (Garden of Eden, ECM - 2006) and a current member of Tomasz Stanko’s Dark Eyes Quintet (Dark Eyes, ECM - 2009). He has released 12 records as a bandleader including musicians like Lee Konitz, Bill Frisell, Paul Motian, Kenny Wheeler, Paul Bley, Chris Cheek, Thomas Morgan, Ben Street, Mark Turner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Andrew D’Angelo, Chris Speed, George Garzone, Oscar Noriega, David Virelles, Jon Christensen and many more. He has toured in Japan, China, South Korea, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, South Africa, USA and most of Europe Jakob Bro is currently leading a trio with Joey Baron and Thomas Morgan. This trio recorded a new album for ECM Records in November 2015 set to come out in the near future. Also he is working with Palle Mikkelborg and with Bro/Knak, a collaboration with the Danish electronica producer Thomas Knak (Opiate). A new project with Danish/British trumpet player Jakob Buchanan, Thomas Morgan and music for choir is also under way. In 2009 and 2013 he received JazzSpecial’s price for Danish Jazz Record of the Year (Balladeering & December Song) and in 2012 he received the DJBFA honorary award. The year after, in 2013 he received both the ”Composer of the Year” Award from Danish Music Publishers Association (the price is named after Danish classical composer Carl Nielsen) and The Jazznyt Price founded by Niels Overgaard.
