BRIGIDS / ST. LOUIS CRICKET CLUB INC. SAINTS STATISTICAL SUMMARY for 2016 / 2017 The following information details St. Brigids / St. Louis Cricket Club records that have been equalled or bettered, and also details Cricketing Milestone Highlights achieved by Saint Members, during the 2016 / 2017 cricket season. The information for this summary, and for the Club’s Trophy Award winners, is gleaned from the Club Team Score Books. Match Day Scoring needs to be an accurate account of the day’s play as ultimately, the score book will decide the result of a game, not by My Cricket, which if reviewed even today, does not contain all match day stats and is strewn with errors. So please undertake scoring responsibly and complete all Match Day details including Opposition, date and catches in the Score Book. Accurate score books make for accurate match day results. On-field success starts from successful off-field endeavours. It has been emphasised of the importance of having accurate score books, but overall this year, the score books are the worst I have encountered with so much match day information missing, including catches. No wonder at the end of the day’s play, the books never match up to each other, let alone the bowling and batting. Maybe, the scorers are spending too much time on their phones, instead of seeing what is happening around them. Anyway, we compile the facts from what is recorded in the Score Books. As President, I believe my job each year is to improve our cricket club and ensure it is a better place than the previous year. This was achieved because of the hard work of all our volunteers and assistants working around the club, starting with our committee members, senior on field leaders, junior coaches and their assistants, parents, supporters and sponsors. We have all given our time this year to this great club because we love what it stands for, love all the people involved and love creating and building a successful all- inclusive community in Aspendale. Congratulations to the four premierships achieved this year, but more importantly congratulation to all who participated and contributed to our club, both on and off the field.

To the committee, I want to personally thank you all as you are the reason the club is successful. My Vice President Matthew Skeggs, another great season at committee level and a great effort with coaching the u/12’s and playing in a senior premiership. Noel Brodie, again our secretary this year and captaining a winning senior team. Great effort Noel. Our treasurer Robert Patrick Hower, sensational at committee level and coaching a junior side and to play in a senior Grand Final, well done RP. Geoff Kilner, words are not enough to explain the enormous job you do for the club. And all with a smile and a Blonde (beer). Laurie Reeve, our junior co-ordinator the hardest position at the club, but thanks for your time this year Laurie. Blair Hutchinson, was our liaison with the council and local government the year and the reason the club was successful for our $250K grant for the upgrade of the Cave. Great work Blair. To Bill Sheldon, Scott Goodman (first year on the committee) Dave Baxter and Dan Moloney a big thank you. We all put our hands up to get involved and to join the committee to make a difference around the club. Great effort by all. More new blood is always welcome on the committee next year if you are thinking about joining.

On field this year was our best season in years. 2 senior Premierships and 1 Grand Finalist from 6 our senior sides and 2 junior premierships and 1 Grand Finalist from 13 junior teams. The first time the club has fielded an u/18 team to add to the 2 teams X u/16’s, 2 teams X u/14’s , 5 teams X u/12’s and an u/12 rookies , T/20 blast and Milo cricket. Our on-field leaders were from the top down- Jerry Hayes, Kai Love-Linay(First year Grand Finalist Captain) , Xavier Burke, Daniel Nash(Premiership captain) Noel Brodie(Premiership Captain) and Scott Glover. Our Junior coaches starting from the U/18’s was Geoff Kilner and Blair Hutchinson with Steve Clifton and Scotty Glover coaching the U/16’s, Ben Burke and Dave Gillard(Premiership coaches) and Scott Goodman - U/14’s and Rod Love-Linay(Premiership coach) ,Mat Skeggs and Brett Pearson(Grand Final coaches), Bobby Hower, Kingsley Anthonisz , Matt Elliott and Geoff Laughlan – U/12’s and Geoff Kilner for T/20 and Geoff Kilner and Blair Hutchinson coaches for Milo. With the enormous numbers in the juniors and growing every year, we believe our juniors are again our strength/future of the club and as the President of the cricket club, the club ensures every child playing for St Brigids/St Louis get a fair go on the field with both bat and ball!

The club again invested financially in a third pitch/wicket being laid at Bondi Rd no. 4 and was always going to happen after the great feedback with the first 2 pitches the last 2 years. We also continued with the success for our 3rd XI playing on turf at Bondi No. 3. giving our juniors an opportunity to play senior turf. Stan Tinkler from England was our overseas player this year and was a strong lad who had success with the ball and was well like around the club.

Socially this year was again underpinned by the very successful Back to the Cave which brings the seniors, juniors and their parents and social members together on the same night to celebrate the on-field successes of our cricketers. The club changed the $1000 draw to a $2000 draw with a $10 entry fee, as we were finding the committee and all involved were creating a successful day for very little financial reward. $2000 draw this season was the great success in dollars and attendance, and is our biggest day on the social calendar and just gets bigger and bigger with another enormous day with food, fun, beer/wine and soft drink with raffles and a jumping castle. To all the committee on the day and Rod Love-Linay for his tasty spit roast again, well done. Golf Day was won by Harpo’s team with 5 under the card at Rossdale. Presentation nights were again at the Cave with all 13 junior sides packing the rooms consuming 75 pizzas sponsored by Bayside Pizza and Big Nick with the senior presentation night well attended with the 2 premiership teams enjoying the night and Gus taking out the IBM Medal for the second year running. Another first this year was the Dog Night at the Sandown Dogs. Adam Murphy organised the night with Noel Susay from Buxtons sponsoring the night with a bus picking the boys up at the Cave and dropping us back there off after a big feed, a bet, whilst listening to Angry Anderson. Rock Day, again was run by the president of the Life members - Ian Baxter, and was the best in years with several older, past players getting together for a drink and a reminisce.

Sponsors again were led by Peter “Flash” Hope and his company Buyers’ Choice. Noel Susay from Buxton Real Estate, Kingsley and Vicki Anthonisz from Lifecare in Mentone also contributing. South Beach Handyman Services with Matt Worsnop, Adrian Cole from Urban Renewables, Matt Orfanellis from GC Containers again donated, Bayside Pizza with the pizzas on Junior preso night, helped by Nick from Dominance Security and Laurie from Control Works were all much-appreciated contributors to the Saints this season.

Next season is looking very promising with the club looking to appoint a senior coach to assist both the 1st XI on field, run senior training and assist in coaching the growing number of juniors we have. Our club rooms will be totally renovated at the start of next season so make sure you get involved again in the all new Cave. Another big change next season will be the appointment of a junior sub-committee. We realised our juniors are getting bigger each year and is too big for one man so we have arranged for this subcommittee to hit the ground running in July.

Thank you to all who made St Brigids/St Louis the best cricket club in the local area. We continue to be a strong cricket community which just gets bigger every year and as always, looking forward to the upcoming season in the newly renovated Cave.

Noel Smacka Fitzgibbon SECRETARIES REPORT –SEASON 16/17

I said it last year and I will continue to say it, Good things come to good people.

Firstly congratulations to Blair Hutchinson for winning the John Donegan award. It is no mean feat to wrestle this award from the Kiln, your efforts in running the club improvement will have a long lasting effect.

The club continues to grow and the trick is do this without interruption. Our juniors are growing and casting an eye even further in the future we need to ensure that our juniors are given everything they can to continue to grow

Off field

To all on the committee, thank you for the service to the club, successful clubs always have strong committees and we are no exception.

The captains of our teams continue to show that they are great leaders.

Congratulations to Angus Maguire for winning the ‘Ian Baxter’ award again this year.

More silverware and the promise of more to come.

ST. BRIGIDS / ST. LOUIS CRICKET CLUB INC. (Founded 1953) SAINTS LIFE MEMBERS ASSOCIATION (Founded 1986) LEGENDS REPORT for 2016/2017 The Saints Life Members Association (Legends) has as usual been actively involved in the social, playing and administration of the club. The Legends organise a few social events throughout the season and here is a brief account of those activities: SLMA Junior Cricketer Award The SLMA Award to the Cave Junior Cricketer, who achieves the most success in the senior ranks for the Saints, was awarded this season to Cale Love-Linay. Cale, who plays U/16 cricket, played the entire season in the club’s 2nd XI as the side’s Wicket-Keeper Batsman, but was prepared to have a crack at bowling. Cale is developing his game as an all-rounder which includes batting in the top 6, wicket keeping, and being a bowler. Keeping and being a bowler is the difficult assignment for Cale at the moment. Not too sure how many caught behinds he took off his own bowling. Cale has time on his side before he decides to which part of the game he wants to focus on, but for the time being, he is literally covering all facets of the game. Excellent season for Cale, while the U/16’s did not achieve to their expectations, Cale was a member of the 2nd XI Grand Final team that nearly jagged the chocolates. Thursday Night Raffles Although this season, the turn-up to training again, was far better than the previous seasons, although not a huge number of players stayed back at the Club Rooms to sample the exquisite cuisine provided by Blinky and the Kiln, so the Traditional Cave Raffle was not run again this year for the second season in a row, which is disappointing. If all players just stayed back for one hour, not only would the Chefs be happy, but it is also a top club bonding session to be had for all club members, and plus a trigger for the Thursday night Raffle. Rock Day - 1st Sunday in February of each Year The turn-up by past club players was excellent this Year. So many people made a concerted effort to catch-up with all their former team mates. It did not matter if there was involvement in past Premiership team, but importantly to catch up with mates and friends. Len Selby turned up, Life member 1963/64, which was a magnificent effort and great support to the day. Now about the game: The Legends won the toss and won the game, as no-one turned up to represent the All- Stars, so the Legends win. Now the Legends have won the last 4 Rock Days, a record that will be difficult to catch. The turn up for the Rock Day is as follows, and hopefully I have not missed anyone: Granto, Hassa, Spudda Shaw, Nooka, Whooosh, Gerry, Harpo, Di and George, Cheryl and Annie, Pedro, Sleepy, Dunny, Marsi, Smithy, Gags, Norm, Keats, Bacca, Smacka, Gregsa, and Len. Next year, we will arrange a sign-in book to make sure we catch up on all those who attended. An excellent turn out and response to the day from past players and friends. Excellent Friday It would appear the Excellent Friday Function has served its purpose of entertaining club members on a traditionally dull day, as well as raising funds for the club. Now, the Pubs are open, Cinemas are open, local footy is played at Edi-As against Bonbeach as an annual event, and the final nail in the coffin is, AFL Football is now played on Good Friday. The Saints cannot compete against all those organisations and events. It would now seem that the Saints were the trail-blazers of Good Friday, with all the large corporations finally catching up to what the Saints have been doing for 40 years. It has been a good ride and plenty of fantastic times and stories, plus plenty of funds raised and ploughed back into Club. FINANCIAL REPORT for 2016/2017 Item Expenditure Receipt Profit Donation $ 52.00 $ 52.00 $ 52.00 1. SLMA Junior Award 16/17 $ 50.00 $ 0.00 - $ 50.00

Re-unions This year at Rock Day the following Premierships were also celebrated, the 1986/87 1st XI (30 years), the 1991/92 2nd XI (25 years) and the 1996/97 3rd XI (20 years) with the majority of players turning up. Grand Final score cards are detailed below. Summary 1. Congratulations on all the Junior sides that made the semi-finals this season with the U/12A and the U/14s getting the chocolates, and the U/12B also playing in the Grand Final, but just missing out. Also, congratulations to the 4th and 5th XIs for bringing home the silverware for the Club with Premierships, and a fantastic effort by the 2nd XI playing in the Grand Final and nearly securing the chocolates. A terrific effort by the club and its members in having 6 teams play off in a Grand Final which must be a first for the Club. 2. A Club memorabilia, a Premiership photo, was removed from the Cave one late evening by club member/s, which is most disturbing. The Club memorabilia is for all members, and as members, we are the current custodians of the club’s memorabilia for past, current and future Club members. Its return would be most welcome when the Club moves back into the revamped rooms next season. Our current members need to show more respect to not only club supporters and fellow members, but to the Club’s pavilion and its history. 3. Thinking of the Direen Family as Pat took her fight right up to MND with enormous courage, but unfortunately MND always prevails until there is a research break through. So our thoughts are with Kerry and his family for their loss, but also, they can be proud for providing such loving and caring assistance to Pat in her struggle with MND. 4. Unfortunately more sad news with the sudden passing of AJ Murphy. “AJ” was a true character of the club and a passionate supporter of our club, who was constantly visiting the club to check on current events and pass on legendary stories of yesterday years. A favourite of the club who served as Club Secretary, Club Captain and was awarded a number of team trophies. Our Club passes on our condolences to the Murphy family who have been not only strong supporters of our club, but great participants as “AJ” sisters and brothers also played for the Club. 5. Thank you to all the Cave members, their families & friends, who have supported the Club over the last season. Your commitment and efforts are appreciated.

SAINTS PREMIERS

------1ST ELEVEN Annual Report 2016/2017 Captain Jeremy Hayes 2ND ELEVEN Annual Report 2016/2017

Captain Kai Love-Linay

Round 1

SBSL def Beaconsfield 3/99 def 7/97 Highlights- Matt Hayes 52* Matt McCoy 28

First 20/20 I think anyone had played for the club. Bowled first and well and kept them to 97. Kriss 'the truck' little along with Matt Moloney were pick of bowlers. While Matt Hayes was instrumental with the bat.

Round 2

SBSL dew Coomora 0/18 drew 175(73) Highlights- McCoy 2/25, Kai 2/25

Typical early game to a season being wet and cold. Kept them to 175 with Kane, Rory, Ben, Robert and Cale all taking a wicket. Lochie Davies and Cale sent in with 7 overs and both remained not out over night!

Round 3

SBSL def Dandy West 152 def 89 & 6/115 Highlights- Jezza 72* (7x6's), Ryan Malcom 3/8(10), Hayes 2/22(16) Highlights- Kai 2/9(6), Ryan Malcom 2/25(11)

Very close to an outright win! Rolled them for 89 on a road with Ryan Malcom having his first standout game in the 2's, Matty Hayes also toyed with the batsman picking up 2. Jezza smashed an unbeaten 75 including 7 maximums

Round 4

SBSL lost southern pirates 94 & 6/117 lost to 162 Highlights- The doctor shandy hand 27, Dreadsy 2/30

Beaten in all aspects of cricket, Mitch hand only real standout with a steady 27.

Round 5 SBSL lost Berwick 157 & 8/83 lost to 202 Highlights-Smacka 62, Dogs 50, Kane 6/60

Batted first and posted 157, after being 3/3 dogs had a dip and made and wick 50 which smacka showed his class reaching 62, Kane smashed them the top order bowling downwind picking up 6/60 and backing his bags to to play 1's from here on in. Round 6 SBSL def Lyndale 102 & 5/180 dec Won Out Right to 66 & 180 Highlight-Dogs 60, Malcom 5/19, Bobby 4/4 Highlights- KG 112

What a win, posting 102 was disappointing and credit to Dogs first innings knocked which was great to watch. Bowling was great from ball one. Ryan Malcom was unbelievable in hitting his spots and was rewarded with a well-deserved 5 fa, while Bobby did what the whiley veteran did and swindled himself 4 of the craftiest wickets you'll see. 2nd innings KG dominated 112* including 10 maximum and 11 fours, while the ball was thrown around and it was Dogs who claimed 3/3 bowling piessssssss.

Round 7 SBSL def Lyndale 3/88 def 80 Highlights- Coyza carnage 3/20, Malcom 3/12, Mad dog 2/15

Was all about the youth! Malcom 3/12 opening up, with mad dog Moloney and carnage cleaning up the tail. Vale and dreads scored 30 apiece.

Round 8 SBSL lost Doveton 220 lost to 303 Highlights- Dogs 41, Special 4/18

Dropped our catches, downed where you’re not meant to and they smashed 303, Krissy taking 4 of the best. Batting was okay in spots, coyza and dogs only 2 reaching 30+.

Round 9 SBSL def Beaconsfeild 280 & 3/60 def 191 Highlights-Mad dog 45, LD 38, Hand 4/42

On the quick Bondi out field at one stage 150 would have been a good score for us but somehow ended up with 280, highest score for the year. Batters 9 & 10 were two kids who showed everyone how to bat with power. Lochie smashing 3 massive maxies and Matt only dealing in boundaries. Mitch bowled really well and was rewarded with 4, great win.

Round 10 SBSL def Hallam SBSL 270 def 130 Highlights- KG & Matt Hayes 55 each, Hayes 3/8(20)

Batting first we posted 270 with our top 3 making 55,55 & 33. From there everyone else chipped in which was probably our first full performance with the bat. Bowling we bowled tight and straight, krissy little came off the long run which Matt Hayes started with 3/8!

Round 11 SBSL def Doveton 3/80 def 72 Highlights- Kai, Ryan, Kyle all got 3

Ryan got a wicket with his first ball and from there on they didn't stop, Kai 3/7, Ryan 3/20 and Kyle 3/15. Mitch went for 21 off his first. Cale and lochie Davies both got red ink making 23* & 17*.

Semi-Final SBSL def Coomoora 189 def 9/183 Highlights- everyone

What a game! Posting 189 it was the experience that got it done. Matt hays opened up and knocked around 37, Smacka showed that he still has hit hitting 37 and Kriss Little smashed 35. Bowling 6 overs overnight they were 0/20. Next day Ryan Malcom took the first on a slow wicket. Bobby opened up with him and took 2 while Krispy also got one of their 5 out. From here the whole game was on a life's edge, they would consolidate and we would get a breakthrough. It all came down to the last over where they needed only 5 runs to win. And Ryan Malcom after bowling 25 overs at age 16 went for 2 and won us the game. There wasn't one player who bowled badly, not one catch dropped. Cale was also unreal keeping 95 overs, 75 of which he would have been up the stumps for not one bye or one dropped catch. Bobby finished with 4, Krispy with 2 but everyone bowled unreal and we got ourselves into the big dance

Grand Final SBSL lost Berwick SBSL 145 lost to 7/258 Highlights- Little 3/49, KG 3/70, Hayes 45, Dogs 38

A great effort by the boys to make it this far, unfortunately we didn't get the result we were after but battled hard all game. Hayes was great making 45 opening and Dogs held down and end which was great. All in all a great season for the boys. Blooded plenty of youth and they are going to be dominated next season! Go the cave!! ST BRIGIDS/STLOUIS 3RD 2016-17 REPORT

Season 2016/7 was a success in even thou we missed out on the finals by a single point. We once again fielded a side in Turf 7 giving juniors an opportunity to play Turf cricket. 34 players represented the third eleven with a mixture of Junior and senior players. The season was an overall success and were very stiff in not making the finals

Round 1 vs HSD, Home, Lost

Them: 8/146 -- Rory Williams 3/23, Harvey Burke 2/28

US: 80 – Jasper Gordon 28

We were scheduled to have a bye round 1 but in late November Hampton Park forfeited all the fixtures so they’re did the draw and this Round 1 game was put on January 7th. With players unavailable due to holidays and playing in the lower grades back in October we were missing 10 players, and we were playing a stack of kids against a side that topped up for the day with senior players, we gave a good account of ourselves with Rory Jasper & Harvey all contributing. There is no doubt in my mind that this cost us finals with all these fixture changes

Round 2 vs HSD, AWAY, Draw

US: 130 – Ryan Malcom 39 Liam Harris 28

THEM: 8/25 – Matt Moloney 3/2 Liam Harris 3/10

Another game another opportunity lost, we made 130 with Ryan Malcolm and Liam getting good starts, we have 21 overs to bowl and have them 8/25, unfortunately, Mother Nature was not so kind to us and the game was washed out the following week as the captain frustration grew.

Round 3 Mordialloc – Home Win

US: 4/325 Declared – Smacka 114 Rod 95 Scott Goodman 51

THEM: 161– Ryan Francis 7/27

Mordialloc fielded one of the youngest teams in Turf 7 but we still had to get the job done and we did what we had to do Smacka makes another ton (too good for Turf 7) Rod makes a 95 and should of made his ton and he knows it, Scott Goodman make a late cameo with 51. We declare and Ryan Francis destroys them with great swing bowling and take great figures of 7/27.

Round 4, Springvale Sth – Away Loss

Them: 8/148 – Ryan Francis 2/15 Kris Little 2/25

US: 61- Matt Hayes 20

For some reason Springvale Sth is our bogey team and we seem to always struggle against them, the less said about this game the better and we were comprehensively outplayed and beaten.

Round 5 Nth Dandenong – Away, Win

US: 117 – Sam Moloney 61 Paki 25

Them: 85 – Sam Moloney 5/26

We Win the toss and bat on a nice ground, our batting lets us down and we are all out for 117 off 29 overs with Sam's big hitting get us a target to defend, we bowl nice and tight with Sam again showing his class above this level with 5/26, We bat again With Matt Moloney (54) and Kris Little (37) the pick of the batsman we try to get an outright victory but to no avail we take the 6 points. Round 6, Cranbourne Home, Loss

US: 68

Them: 151 Rory Williams 3/36 Billy Flavelle 3/46

US: 77

We lost outright nothing more to say,

Round 7 Doveton, Home Loss

US: 7/153 Bing 47 Paki 22

Them: 2/156

Playing the top side, we gave ourselves a good account with Bing (I have tickets on myself) making 47. Never seen a man so angry in not getting his 50, There batsman got a hold of us with bing the pick of the bowlers and I don’t know how as he bowled absolute rubbish and finished figures of 1/16 off 8 with his spin. Even the ones players across at the other ground where laughing.

Round 8 Lynbrook

THEM – 182 Rory Williams 5/68 Vik 2/23

US 9/190 – Paki 46 Will Clifton 23

They win the toss, batted, and make 182 after being 1/107 at one stage so credit to our bowlers who fought back hard. Rory Williams was super taking 5/68 off 33 overs, With 10 runs to get and only one wicket needed Steve Clifton and Rory Williams get us over the line in what was a great win.

Round 9 HSD, Away, Win

US: 277 Ethan 101 Ryan Francis 36

THEM: 112 – Rory Williams 2/22 Vik 3/23 Will Clifton 2/17

5/85 - Billy 2/17

Playing HSD for the 3rd time and against my all-time favorite footballer in Stephen Milne (St. Kilda FC Legend) was an exciting time for me (I will get bagged for this) Ethan smashes all over the park to make a chanceless 101, Billy Flavelle gives Milney a sendoff which was prices less, a good victory against a very ordinary team.

Round 10 Parkfield Home, Win

Them: 186 Rory Williams 3/36 Bob Hower 2/58 Vik 2/25

US: 6/190 Scott Goodman 97 Rod 37 Will Clifton 26

With the Captain being away on wedding duties for the final 2 games of the season Rod takes over and does a fantastic job with a great team performance against Parkfield, Rod telling me he and their captain nearly coming to blows with was a highlight

Round 11 vs Doveton Away, Win

THEM 197 – Rod 3/32 Bob Hower 2/30

US 8/198– Ethan 44 Vanders 39

A Cracking result for the boys beating Doveton North who were undefeated at the time, it goes to show that we are capable of matching with the best in Turf 7, Rod leads the way and bowls well and Ethan and Vanders gets the runs.

I thoroughly enjoyed my 2nd season as captain, and hopefully I can continue next season as well, we have some great kids coming through we played a lot of under 16 juniors and even played a few under 14 kids as well which is great giving them exposure on Turf, I would personally would like to thank Rod Love –Linay who helped me out a lot during the year and deserved his best team man award . Congratulations to Ethan who won the batting average and to Rory Williams who won the bowling average. Looking forward to next year as I can see a great year coming for us In Turf 7.

Paki ST BRIGIDS/STLOUIS 4th 2016-17 REPORT

After winning the Grand Final last year the 4ths were promoted to D Grade. The boys are ready for a new challenge in a higher grade.

Round 1 V Narre South Us 2/135 (Greeno 72*, Murph 41*) Them 8/145 (Lochie Davies 1/4, Murph 1/4) First game up is a T20 game great batting by Greeno and Murph sets up a good total unfortunately average bowling & fielding allow Narre South to get over the line. One of their batsman hits the bowling everywhere for a well-made 87. Round 2 V Fountain Gate Us 6/284 (Geoff Laughlin 144*, Corey Hand 87, Murph 37) Them 78 (Corey Hand 5/24, Nashy 5/31) Playing a pretty undermanned Fountain Gate they bat first and new recruit Corey gets his first of many 5 for’s of the season, with great support from the skipper who also got 5 we roll them for 78. We lose a couple of early wickets until new boys Corey & Geoff get together and they proceed to hit the bowling all over the park. Geoff batting brilliantly in his debut with 144* and Corey makes a very good 87. 2nd week is washed out. A good win in the 1st week. Round 3 V Dandenong West Us 196 (Kane 85, Bacca 23*, Cam 21) & 0/20 (Murph 19*) Them 109 (Cam 4/25, Liam 2/11) & 101 (Kane 5/48, Nashy 3/38) Play a very average bunch of blokes at Dandy West. They bat first and we roll them for 109 with Cam the pick of the bowlers with 4 wickets. We bat pretty solidly for 196 with Kane back from Venezuela batting very well for 85. We are all out just before tea on the 2nd day and we assume the game is over but they announce they want some batting practice well this backfires on them and we roll them for 101. We only need 21 runs to win outright which we achieve easily. A great outright win against an average bunch of blokes. Round 4 V Doveton North Us 5 /172 (Lochie Davies 54, Skeggsy 45, Corey 28*) Them 162 (Corey 3/29, Liam 2/24, Bacca 2/25) Playing a very dogged Doveton North who bat nearly the whole of the first day. Corey the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 29 off 24 overs. We roll them for 162. We then lose an early wicket with the skipper being ran out before stumps. We lose some early wickets before Lochie and Skeggsy put on a partnership of 100. Lochie batted very well for 54, Skeggsy runs himself out for 45 which is probably karma for running out the skipper the previous week. Round 5 V Lynbrook Us 2/112 (Will Clifton 52*, Skeggsy 30) Them 54 (Corey 6/24 off 22 overs, Scott Goodman 2/7) & 1/50 Lynbrook bat first and we roll them for only 54. Corey bowls brilliantly (this might be mentioned a few times during this report) Corey got 6 for 24 off 22 overs a great effort. We bat very cautiously to be 1 for 37 overnight. Will bats very well making 52 especially in the 2nd week playing some very good shots. Skeggsy continues his good form with 30. We attempt an outright but they show a bit more fight in the 2nd week before the game is called off. Round 6 V Beaconsfield Us 9/244 (Ses 54, Boony 44, Skeggsy 34*) Them 64 (Corey 6/16, Boony 4/15) & 146 (Corey 3/38, Ses 3/43) Make the trip out to Beaconsfield for the first time and play on probably the best synthetic ground in the comp. They bat first and we roll them in 26 overs. Corey bowls very well again to get 6 for 16. Boony back in the team after a stint on turf bowls well from the other end. We make 244 with nearly everyone getting a start. Ses the pick of the batsman making a very well complied 54. Boony & Skeggsy put on 80 for the 2nd last wicket to get us to 244 before declaring. We send them in again they dig in and nearly bat the overs out but we manage the outright with Corey getting another 3 wickets and Ses continues his good allroud game by getting 3 wickets. Round 7 V Cranbourne Us 128 (Kane 30) Them 9/139 (Billy Flavelle 7/42) First game after Xmas against the top team we bat first on a very hot day and are rolled for 128. Kane the only batsman to put up a fight making 30. They get off to a good start but suddenly start losing wickets and its game on, unfortunately they pass us 8 down. Billy bowls very well getting 7 wickets. Round 8 V HSD Us 6/354 (Greeno 119, Nashy 104*, Bacca 26*) Them 150 (Boony 4/15, Liam 2/1, Bacca 2/14) They send us in 1st for some reason. Greeno back to his best bats brilliantly for 119 hitting the ball to all parts of the ground. Nashy finds some form to make 104* and puts on 100 with Bacca for the 7th wicket. We bowl pretty average at the start of the innings and they get off to a good start. Boony pegs them back bowling well for 4 wickets. Liam and Bacca wrap up the game getting 2 wickets each. Round 9 V Narre South Us 2/295 (Skeggsy 101*, Greeno 80, Geoff 54, Liam 35*) Them 186 (Corey 6/46) They bat first and put up a real fight with the bat keeping us out on the ground for the majority of the 1st day. Corey back into the team bowls his consistently brilliant self getting another 6 wickets. Greeno continues his good form making a very well compiled 80. Geoff back into the team makes a very hard hitting 54 well supported by Liam with 35*. The story of the game is Skeggsy making his maiden ton after 30 years of playing. One of the more dramatic tons getting dropped on 99 before his ton. Round 10 V Parkfield Us 248 (Murph 119, Kane 57, Corey 23) Them 104 (Corey 9/45) We bat first against probably the best bowling attack in the grade. We lose early wickets until Corey & Murph steady the innings. Murph batting very well for 119, Kane joins him and they put on 126 for the 6th wicket. Kane batting well for 57. There turn to bat and Corey bowls one of the best spells of bowling seen at the Cave. Corey didn’t bowl one bad ball returning the brilliant figures of 9 for 45 off 26 overs. A brilliant performance. A good win against a decent team. Round 11 V HSD Us 5 for 245 (Corey 108*, Geoff 59) Them 147 (Bacca 2/14, Cam 2/25) A one day game for the last game before the finals. We bat first and there is no end to Corey’s talent making a brilliant 108*. He was well supported by Geoff making 59. They get off to a good start with the bat before Bacca & Cam bowl a good line getting 2 wickets each. Semi Final V Dandenong West Us 8/283 (Greeno 78, Corey 62, Boony 33*, Geoff 28) Them 62 (Corey 5/32, Boony 3/26) Play the average blokes from earlier in the year in Dandenong West at the cave. We lose an early wicket before Greeno & Geoff steady the innings. Greeno bats very well against a quality attack with 78, Geoff supports Greeno very well making 28. Corey continued his great form in the middle making 62. Boony tees off at the end with 33 to get us to 283 at the end of Day 1. They get off to a terrible start with the bat and never recover. Corey gets another bagful this time getting 5 for 32, Boony gets 3 wickets at the other end. They only last 24 overs. A brilliant performance to get us in a Grand Final for the 3rd year in a row. Grand Final V Cranbourne Them 187 (Nashy 3/19, Corey 3/51) Us 4/188 (Greeno 103*, Corey 39, Skeggsy 26) Cranbourne bat first and get off to a solid start they get to 4 for 130 at tea and the game is evenly poised. However surprisingly they bat very slowly after tea before being out for 187 in the last over of the day. This was due to good bowling from the skipper who got 3 for 19 off 11 overs. Corey bowls a marathon spell of 3 for 51 off 29 overs. Bacca also bowls a tight line after tea getting 1 for 29 off 16 overs. Always hard chasing runs in a grand final the aim is to bat the first hour without losing a wicket we do that with Greeno and Skeggsy putting on 60 runs. Skeggsy strains a quad which is probably a good thing as it allowed Boony to be his runner which allows for quick running between the wickets. Skeggsy is out for 26 we then lose a couple of quick wickets before Corey comes in. Corey & Greeno put on 99 for the 5th wicket before Corey is dismissed with 5 runs for a well compiled 39. Greeno bats brilliantly for 103* a great effort in a Grand Final which sets up a memorable grand final win. A fantastic effort to win back to back premierships especially going up a grade. Not only that Cranbourne were undefeated coming into the Grand Final. Once again we had a great bunch of blokes playing which made rocking up every week something to look forward to. There was some brilliant performances during the season in particular Corey having a brilliant season with both bat & ball. Greeno thoroughly deserved to win the batting averages showing again he is too good for this grade. Greeno also won back to back competition batting averages a great effort. Thanks to Flash for scoring during the season in particular during the finals. And also to Bacca & Skeggsy for setting up for home games & putting the scores in every week.

Also congratulations to Nasty and the 5ths on a great premiership win.

Nashy

ST BRIGIDS/STLOUIS 5th 2016-17 REPORT

The 5ths entered the year as reigning Premiers thanks to Nashy’s team the year before. I would like to thank all the cave men that played in our team during the year. We had a core of young lads that each took a turn to shine through- out the season, this was very pleasing and all goes well for our club in the future. It was a long year in a competitive competition, we started well dropped off a bit in the middle and wound up towards the end, finishing well. Don’t want to give away too much but, “I TOLD YOU”.

Round1 Vs Berwick Springs at Home (Browns) T20 Toss Berwick Bat Result WIN Them all out 98 Us 8 for 104 Our first game of the year against Berwick Springs was a challenge as they had won ‘F’ Grade the year before and were promoted to E Grade. Berwick where the strongest team from F Grade so we knew this would be a challenge. With the fixture being a bit messy we were able to grab Ethan Kilner and Ryan Malcolm We opened the bowling with Paul Matthews who by the way opened for us all season. Watto with 4 for 2, Ryan Malcolm 2 for 17, Harry ‘Nugget’ Flavelle 2 for 12, Cody Matthews and Joel Shanahan 1 each. After 20 overs we bowled them out for 98.

With a bit of a carrot and stick approach we opened the batting with the Kilner’s. Ethan made 32 and Kiln got a few. We had another family partnership down the order, this time Steve Malcolm was the dominant scorer with 33 supported by Ryan with 9. Watto and I saw us get by the total in the last over finishing at 8 for 104 off our 20 Based on our performance I was calling out us as potential premiers.

Man of the match Watto

Round 2 Vs St Marys Away Toss St Marys Bat 2 Day result Draw (wash out 2nd week) We bowled well with Jasper Gordon taking 3 for 35 and Joel Shanahan 3 for 37, Cody 2 for 16, Paul Matthews and Nugget 1 each. They were all out for 156 off 56.2 overs. Nugget was going to be away the second week so we opened with him and the Kiln. After 15 overs we were 0 for 39 with Nugget on 31 and Kiln on 7. We definitely were the better of the 2 sides and walked away in a great position. After a massive downpour on the second Saturday the game was called off. Harry actually elected to miss his football trip to play the second week. Little did we know this was the sort of commitment that was required for our season and these kind of efforts would really start to pay off

Man of the match Nugget

Round 3 Vs Dandenong West 2 day game Home, toss SBSLCC bat result loss Us all out 73 Them 9 for 150 cc Us 6 for 138 cc After an early wicket, the Clifton’s (Steve and Will) steadied us and at 1 for 54 we seemed in control. With some dodgy tactics (bowling bouncers continually at our young fellas) and a lack of digging in we were skittled for 73 off 46 overs. Will with 24 and Steve with 23 were the only real contributors. Bowling Paul and Joel we quickly had them 3 for 10 and we felt we were really in the game. The game then turned sour with Dandy giving some very poor umpiring decisions namely LBW’s when batsmen bat a foot behind their crease and go back getting hit in front of middle, also smashing the ball only to be given NOT OUT caught behind. Their excuse a lack of understanding of the rules. POOR FORM, they really should have been 5 for 10. Given several chances their batsmen capitalised seeing them declare at 9 for 150. Joel 3 for 32, Keano 3 for 24s, Jasper 2 for 27 and Paul 1 for 17 We had 48 overs to face to avoid an outright. In the second innings losing Will early didn’t help our cause but Steve Clifton 52 (his first Senior 50) and Kiln 27 no, meant we dug in. Dandy decided to once again bowl bouncers at our Kids this then descended into an argument. With a bit of a middle order collapse which saw us at 6 for 68 still with 23 overs to go and behind their total, Geoff Kilner and Noel 34 no batted the rest of the overs. We finished on 6 for 138. I must say I was really disappointed with their behaviour, we found out during the season from every other team that played them that this was the way Dandy rolled, poor umpiring and short pitched bowling. I vowed to pay them back and will never forget (and forgive) their tactics.

Man of the match Steve Clifton (Cave award)

Round 4 Vs Dingley Two day Away toss Dingley (bowl) WIN Us 7 for 286 off 72 overs Dingley all out 166 60 overs

Kiln took over as Captain for this clash. Opening with Will Clifton they put on 156 for the first wicket (Will 63 Kiln 80) We welcomed Tristan ‘Cec’ Harris into the team. Batting him at 3 he opened his account with a handy 40 . Matt Moloney batted at 5 also making 40 and Cody Matthews teeing of late not out 27. John Fuller playing his first game for the season 4 not out Opening the bowling with Paul and Joel we had them 1 for 48 after 18 overs. Harry Flavelle took 3 for 21, Cec 4 for 16 with Jasper, Will and Paul 1 each We dropped a few catches and should have rolled them for a smaller total Man of the Match Geoff Kilner (Cave award)

Round 5 Vs LynBrook Two Day Away Toss Lynbrook (bowl) Result WIN Us all out 247 67 overs Cec 93 Them all out 208 65 overs Harry Flavelle 4 for 52 With Lynbrook suffering the loss of a club champion, many of their favourite sons trotted out as a mark of respect. Lynbrook was led by Corey Pellisier (son of the deceased), Corey put his hand up and decided to take over for the rest of the season. We welcome Danny Carroll for his first game of the year and opened him with the Kiln. Losing both our openers for 4 runs, Tristan Harris and Noel put on 118 for the next wicket to have us at 3 for 122. Tristan eventually falling 7 runs short of his maiden 100. All our young guys batted well and kept the scoreboard ticking over, Nugget 15, Cody 28, Jasper 20. Paul Matthews also batted well with 23. We had 4 overs at them and Paul snagged a wicket in the first over caught Cody. Lynbrook ended up 1 for 11 overnight. Week 2 We continued with Paul and Joel for another 12 overs capturing another wicket. First change we threw the ball to Nugget and his 20 overs netted 4 for 52. Paul ended up with 2 for 31 off 13 overs. Cec bowled 13 overs 2 for 33. Shaun Napier (Ox) 5 overs 1 for 29 (first cave wicket), Jasper Gordon 1 for 4. Joel bowled well without taking a wicket. Keano normally an opening bowler bowled late and held them in check. Lynbrook had a strong team and this was a very good win. The game was played in great spirits. My hat goes off to the Lynbrook boys

Man of the Match Tristan Harris (Cave Award)

Round 6 Vs Narre Warren Two Day away Toss them (bat) WIN Them all out 110 50 overs Us all out 188 55 overs Brendon 46 Retired hurt We had several outs for this match, Scott Glover told me about this young man named Vikrant, so this week we welcome Vikrant his father Vinod, a club favorite Brendon Davies, Russell Gould, Morgan Sheldon, Mitch Fielder, Zac and Tom Kerchaval to the team. Bowling first we opened with Keano and Vikrant. Keano bowled a fantastic line and length and finished with 2 for 11 off 9 overs. Vikrant at the other end is a Under 14 demon fast bowler and had them jumping around, he bowled 12 overs 2 for 21 Shaun 2 for 17, Russell 1 for 25 (first cave wicket) and Morgan 1 for 9. Tom Kerchaval kept and he did a fantastic job. Opening with Brendon and Morgan we lost Morgan with the score on 4. This brought Vikrant to the crease, did I tell you Vik can also bat, making a handy 23. Next in was Mitch Fielder, this is a young man with a great technique and I believe this was his breakout game, (this boy will play at a much higher level). After 22 overs we were 2 for 86 that was really 3 for 86 as Brendon was unavailable for the next week. Week 2 OX fell early and we are now 4 for 93. Zac batted well and unfortunately got caught of the back of the bat. Mitch continued to bat well and saw us safely past the opposition score, Mitch ended up with 43. Russel felt he copped a dodgy decision from Ox and this led to a frosty ride home in the car. Keano not out 4. Narre are a great bunch of blokes and really play in the right spirit. Man of the match, Mitch Fielder

Round 7 Vs Dingley Two Day home Toss them (bat) Loss Them 9 for 246 Tim Miller 5 for 59 Us all out 177 Noel 78 Not out With the temperature in the high 30’s and a couple short (not that they knew that)( they were also short 1), we almost had them convinced to make this a one day game next week, The captains decided to shorten the game to 65 overs a side. Unfortunately we lost the toss and they batted. Thanks to Murph (who sub fielded ) and now with 8 players we took to the field. Because of the heat, bowlers were used in short spells, seeing me have a trundle and taking the first wicket of the match an ending up with 2 wickets, unfortunately dropping their captain on 70 with him ending up on 140 probably cost us the game. I think I nearly killed Tim Miller by bowling him for 17 overs. Tim took 5 for 59 in a herculean effort. Morgan Sheldon bowled really well and so did Matt Bruce, special mention to Watto who gave me 12 overs. Week 2 With the team topped up and welcoming Flash we were full of hope. We had a very strong bating line up (well at least on paper). Opening with Blair Hutchinson and Morgan we lost Blair early, this could have been worse as Blair was hit in the head at the start of the day, Blair will now wear a helmet. Skeggsy ran himself out and losing Disco, Matt Bruce and Tim Miller saw us at 6 for 29. Nathan Direen took control and smashed 41 falling the first over after tea. We were now 7 for 96. Watto joined me and we put on 59 for the 8th wicket now 8 for 155. Flash was the last wicket to fall caught at mid-wicket turning the ball for a single. This is one we probably should have won. Man of the match, their captain Lochie

Round 8 Vs St Marys Two Day Home Toss us (bat) WIN Us 8 for 313 72 overs Cody 94 Cec 58 Them all out 217 51.3 overs Cec 4 for 57 Cody 2 for 26

Once again Kiln took the reins winning the toss he decided to bat. Opening with Charlie Palmer (21) they put on 44 for the first wicket. Cec at his usual spot as number 3 made 58, with Jasper Gordon 41. The most pleasing innings came from Cody Matthews who made 94, this is Cody’s first senior 50 and shows that he can definitely can handle senior cricket. Every batsmen got a start so we were able to build a big total. Week 2 Opening the bowling with Paul and Jacob we had them at 3 for 34 before the first change. Whilst they had 2 batsmen make over 50 a constant fall of wicket ensured that our total would be enough. Cec bowling at 4 ended up with 4 for 57 whilst Cody took 2 for 26 Paul Matthews 2 for 31 and Jacob 2 for 31 Man of the Match Cody Matthews

Round 9 Vs Berwick Springs away toss SBSLCC (bat) Loss Us 183 72 overs Jasper 63 Blair 40 Harry 26 Them 6 for 185 Jasper 5 for 20 (including a Hatrick) With finals looming we started to talk more and more about batting all our overs. Berwick Springs had started a winning streak and put themselves back into Finals contention. As I said in round 1, Berwick Springs were probably the team to beat. Winning the Toss we opened with Kiln and Charlie Palmer, keeping in mind we wanted to bat all our overs scoring was very slow. The opposition were getting frustrated unfortunately we lost a few quick wickets and this saw us at 5 for 31 after 20 overs and under pressure. Enter Jasper Gordon and Blair Hutchinson with patience and persistence the pair put on 110 before Blair retired hurt. With 10 overs left and wickets in the shed Harry Flavelle loaded up with a quick fire 26. Jasper batted for 53 overs in very hot conditions for 63. We were starting to see this young man mature with the bat. We were happy that we batted all our overs against a very good side. Week 2 We opened with Jacob and Harry with no success, both bowled well we just couldn’t get a break through. Morgan and Cec had a tilt at their openers but it wasn’t until Jasper Gordon at 3rd change came on that things got interesting. After 22 overs they were 76 without loss. Jasper’s first ball bowled their opener who was on 46, the next ball Jasper had his man snicked off to our wicket keeper Blair and the next saw their batsmen get rapped on the Pads and given LBW, Jasper just got a HATRICK. Our team were running around everywhere screaming, rolling on the ground, we were all swept up in this massive high and now we were back in the game. Jasper’s first over saw him with figures of 3 for 0 and after Jaspers second over he was 5 for 0 and they were 5 for 80. We were given 2 catches which unfortunately we didn’t hold and their ex club captain took the game away from us. For a short period in time we were flying and we had managed to challenge the best team in the comp. By dropping the game we had opened up our spot in the top 4, we were 5 and in danger of not making the finals.

Man of the match Jasper Gordon Round 10 Vs Doveton two day home forfeit WIN Doveton who at this stage were top of the ladder decided to forfeit, playing a weaker team in the last round and still safely in the 4 may have influenced their decision. We were hoping that one of the other teams could get an outright and therefore gift us 10 points and put us back into the top 4. This wasn’t the case we took the 6 points but still sitting in 5th place.

Round 11 Vs Narre North one day away toss SBSLCC (bat) WIN This was the last round and we had to win to keep any hopes of making the finals. We had to rely on a team above us in 3rd or 4th losing. Us 6 for 247 36 overs Harry 63 Jasper 55 Tim Miller 32 Them 9 for 103 36 overs Once again Narre proved themselves to be great blokes, playing in the right spirit. We opened with Disco and Cec after Kiln couldn’t find his glasses. A solid start saw us 65 before Cec fell for 20. Disco worked hard and played himself into the game with 40 before he was stumped by their keeper with very sharp glove work. We promoted Nugget to 3 and he took his chance with a fine 64 before once again their keeper stumped him. Tim Miller made 32 and in a late rush the inform man Jasper got back to back 50’s with 55. Kiln never got to bat and most of the old blokes just watch our young guys shine. After our 36 overs and with half the job done we were 247 a really defendable target. After a few matches we had our opening pair of Paul and Joel back together. With a nice piece of fielding we managed to run out their captain and start us on our way to victory. Paul finishing with 2 for 30 and Joel 2 for 10, Cody Matthews took 2 for 15, Harry Flavelle 1 for 24, Tim Miller 1 for 15. It was getting tough to get a gig in the 5th and after a match winning performance the game before Jasper didn’t get an opportunity to bowl. Narre had 2 young boys play and we ensured that they enjoyed the game. After the game one of the Mum’s thanked us very much for giving her son a go. The opposing captain noted that Dandy West hadn’t been as kind the week before. They finished on 9 for 103 after 36 overs. Our job done, now we sit back and wait to see how the other results went.

Man of the Match Harry Flavelle

I text the Captain of Berwick Springs (4th) and he informed me that they had won by one run on the last ball of the day. Damn 1 chance left. At 10:00pm that night we found out that Dingley (6th) had rolled Doveton (3rd) and we had made the finals. We finished 4th and would get to play Dandy West (1st) and hopefully get redemption for their poor sportsmanship and behaviour in round 3.

Semi– final Vs Dandenong West away Toss SBSLCC bat At the end of the Round 11 Joel informed me that he was unable to play the semi final should we make it. With 1 spot available in a settled side we picked Luke Vanderloo. Luke had played most of the year with Scott Glover in the 6ths he had be a tremendous support to Scott both in his advice and his on-field performances. Wording both umpires up on Dandy Wests behaviour and their practice of batting behind the crease I was satisfied that we would get a fair go. Calling tails again saw us win our 3rd toss in a row and with play on both Saturday and Sunday we felt it was an advantage to bat first. Once again we believed that if we bat our overs that would give us the best chance to win. On a very bouncy pitch we opened with Kiln and Disco. This deck was hard to bat on and after 17 overs we lost our first wicket with the score on 21. Disco had made a valuable 18 and Kiln was not out on 2. Next to Bat Cec. Cec is our premier batsman and he showed why making 32. Kiln eventually fell for 5 after 27 overs after failing to put away a really bad ball, up until that moment Kiln was the mark of concentration. All year we had shown faith in our young guys and as Jasper was in great form we promoted him to 4, unfortunately a sharp bouncing caught him by surprise and he walked back without scoring. Luke Vanderloo batting with Cec steadied the ship and when he fell for 12 we were 4 for 74. Tim Miller 9, Cody Matthews 14, Blair Hutchinson 4, Noel 5, Harry Flavelle 14 and Paul Matthews 8 not out. As you can see our batsmen got starts but we kept losing wickets. All out for 136 after 68 overs, we left the door open. Not what we had wished for but that is what we have to work with.

We figured if they bat their overs then they win. They had 12 overs to face tonight and 80 on Sunday, it was their home deck so they knew about the bounce. Opening with Paul Matthews their opening batsmen Siad swung hard from the first ball and took 17 off the first over. Harry came on from the other end the other less talented opener tried the same, as I said he was less talented and we let him know that he was playing some of the worst shots we had ever seen. On the other hand Siad was hitting some of the cleanest shots I have ever seen and he was taking the game away from us. Paul eventually cleaned up the other opener not before we mentioned how undisciplined he was. Siad thick edged a drive running back and diving Blair (our keeper) took a fantastic catch. The down side Blair managed to hurt his leg. They were 2 for 56 of 9 overs, were they trying to win the match that night? In came the man that bats on his stumps. After asking my team mates every ball if he was batting behind his crease he was given out LBW. 3 wickets became 4 and 4 wickets became 5. After 12 overs we had them at 5 for 63. Harry with 3 wickets and Paul with 2. Blair had taken 3 catches including the important wicket of Siad, unfortunately he would be unable to keep on Sunday .Their captain (Abdul) was still in and he posed a danger to us. Sunday The simple maths we need 5 wickets and they need 74 runs. As Blair was unable to field Noel took the gloves and Morgan sub fielded. Paul took a wicket in the first over of the day caught Kiln, them 6 for 65 Paul got the next wicket in the 5th over of the day, them 7 for 75. Harry took the next wicket in the 10th over of the day caught Disco them 8 for 84. Their skipper loved the cut shot so we strengthened the field to stop him scoring. With Tim Miller at deep backward point saving 4, Abdul hit a cut shot after much confusion the old boy at the non strikers end sent Abdul back only to see him run out by a fantastic throw from Tim Miller. 9 for 86. When Jasper held onto a sky ball we had them all out for 102 off 29.4 overs Paul Matthews 5 for 60 off 14.4 Harry Flavelle 4 for 40 off 13. In true Dandy spirit they put us back in after 40 overs the game was called we were 4 for 137. Tim Miller making 69 and Geoff Kilner 35. On a tough deck Kiln batted for an amazing 60 overs. Cec and Tim were given out LBW by the professional umpire, both decisions were incorrect.

Man of the Match Paul Matthews. Kiln, Cec, Nugget and Tim a close second.

Off to the Big Dance I TOLD YOU (remember back to round 1). Entering the grand final week with history against us. No SBSLCC 5ths team had ever won a premiership. A win would mean Bacca had to make new stubby holders. The team trained well all week in preparation for the grand final. As Joel was available and I had the unenviable task of dropping someone. Unfortunately Luke was the man to miss out.

Grand final vs St Marys Away toss SBSLCC Bat Result read on

Having played St Marys twice this year and been dominant in both games we were confident. We had a good mix of old and youth. Blair had been in rehab all week to get up for the final.

Sweating on the toss I called tails and won, we will bat. Once again our goal bat all our overs make them work hard and have to back up the next day. Opening with Geoff and Harry (Harry had taken them apart in Round 2 and he might just give us a flyer). The outfield was very slow and made run scoring difficult after 10 overs we were 9 runs. Harry just started to get his eye in the 11th over taking 12 off it, when a bowling change saw him bowled, us 1 for 24. Disco tickled one to the keeper and now we are 2 for 28. Kiln fell for 8 in the 39th over, us now 3 for 59. Tim Miller made 18, Jasper fell cheaply causing a batting line up swap with Noel at 7 with Cody now to come in at 8. Cec who up to this point had batted sensationally fell for 34 and we were 6 for 93 off 58 overs. Last time the teams met Cody made 94 so St Marys we very weary of what this young man could do. Cody got a ball that jumped and he fell for 10. Finals bring out the best in some and the worst in others, St Mary’s keeper fell into the later category. Constantly sledging our batsmen, especially vicious to our young guys. You sir are an asshole. With some late rear guard batting we managed to face all our overs and make 154. Noel 34 not out. Blair 16 Their best bowler was a spinner that didn’t spin it, he finished with 5 for 35, was this telling us something?

At the start of the game they asked if they could rotate 12 fielders as they had one guy that was unlucky to miss the Grand Final. Never give a sucker an even chance. The unlucky guy was their best fielder he never went off and they rotated their old blokes on and off the field, my mistake. Us all out 154 off 80 overs

Sunday I spoke to their captain before the start of play and we were both happy with the previous days play they wanted to contain us to under 180 and we wanted to bat all day . The ground had dried out and the outfield has got faster. This was a bummer as we only had small total to defend. Opening with Paul Matthews and Joel Shanahan, Paul managed to get their captain out for a duck in the first over. In over 8, Paul removed their Centurion from the Semi-final, caught Kiln with his big bucket hands. Things were going our way they were 2 for 8. The new batsmen popped a catch to second slip and unfortunately we didn’t hold it, this was a momentum shift (they should have been 3 for 8 instead they were now 2 for 40 odd). We dropped one more catch and with the game slipping through our fingers. We were looking at a bowling change, Paul and Joel were tiring so we decided to give Paul a break and give Joel one more. Jasper was an x-factor and we put him on downwind. Joel slowly but surely started to get on top and was drying up the runs. One more over became one more and so on. In Joel’s 13th over straight he clean ripped the other opener, 3 for 62. Joel would go on to bowl 16 overs straight and moved the game back toward us. This young man gave us everything he had and impacted the game. We brought on Harry Flavelle as we knew he could bowl tight lines. Jasper was holding his end up and bowled 9 overs for 32 runs. Time for spin, Tim Miller had an immediate impact taking a wicket in his first over. Them 4 for 95. Nugget removed the sledger (the sledger also won the comp batting average) caught Blair for 9. Them 5 for 95. Tim took his second wicket in his second over caught Disco. Them 6 for 95. Clamps on restricting their runs and the game swinging our way.

The sledger has now moved to insulting our young boys from over the fence. This put some more heat in the game and a bit of banter on and off the field. 42nd over, wicket Harry, caught Blair, them 7 for 99. Next wicket Bowled Miller, them 8 for 102. 5 overs go by and they score 21 more runs, things getting tense, we need 2 more wickets they need 32 runs. Next wicket Bowled Miller 9 for 123. In comes the young fella that took 5 for in the first innings. The young guy lasted just over 6 balls and seeing Tim miller’s delivery hit the stumps, I immediately turned to the umpire making sure the ball was legal (and it was), it was time to celebrate. We had won the premiership. Them all out 123 off 53 overs

In a display of determination, Blair had battled through 2 days carrying an injury. He never let a bye through, he never fumbled a ball, he played his role, he made an impact.

Man of the Match Tim Miller. Honourable mentions to Cec, Joel, Kiln, Nugget, Blair, Paul, and the rest of the team. The party at the cave that night was epic.

I would like to thank every person that played in the 5ths this year. The 13 that made it to the final, we now have something that can never be taken away. A big thanks to Patrick Jamieson for coming to all finals training sessions and bowling at all our guys. Your effort helped us to get over the line.

Noel Brodie ST BRIGIDS/STLOUIS 6th 2016-17 REPORT Round 1 v Dingley - loss

This was a first for me playing a 20/20 match and now that I have done it I don’t care if I don’t play another one. Anyway, the powers that be decided that we were to play this one for points. Dingley won the toss and chose to bat. They accumulated 92 off their 20 overs which I thought was a pretty good score at this level. Being the first game, our bowlers were in a generous mood and gave the opposition 18 wides and no balls. Vanders was the pick of the bowlers with 3/15 off his 4 overs and Hamish 2/20 and Keano 1/10 in support. When it came to batting, we didn’t do much. Vanders made 22 and no one else did much and we reached 61.

Round 2 v Sandown Park – loss We went to Sandown Park lost the toss and had to bowl. We did pretty well keeping them to 165. Vanders took 4 wickets, Vikrant bowled well with 2/20 off 8 overs and Ryan took 2/20 off 4 overs. We took 8 catches for this innings which was also a highlight. Unfortunately, with 24 overs left, we were 3/44 at the end of the day. The next week was very wet and play started late. We made 56 and lost on first innings

Round 3 v Dingley – loss For some reason, we were playing Dingley at home for the second time in 3 games. They won the toss again and were all out in the last over for 206. Hamish had a good day with the ball bowling 14 overs and taking 4/18. Vikrant took 2/41 off 4 overs and Trae Love-Linay from the U12’s took a wicket with his first ball in senior cricket and ended with 2/35 off 10 overs. We put up a reasonable effort getting 167. Vik was good getting 33 and Morgs got 22 and JB was back.

Round 4 v Beaconsfield – win We went out to Beaconsfield and I lost the toss again so we were in the field. We kept them to 190 off 69 overs and Vanders was the star with 5/49 off 15 overs. Good support from most of the bowlers with Morgs 2/19 off 8 and Vik 2/13 off 7. Morgs and I opened the batting and put on 55 for the first wicket. Morgs was terrific making 42 quick runs and putting the opposition on the back foot. Mitch came and went quickly and then Blair came after in after putting his hand up to help the lower sides. He certainly did that by top scoring with 65 not out and we didn’t lose another wicket. We passed their score 2 down with half a dozen overs to go and Blair and I put on a 132 run partnership.

Round 5 v Cranbourne – win We went out to Cranbourne and at last won a toss and had a bat first. Some good starts but decent scores with Blair 24 and Morgs the best with 24. We only used up 61 overs which was the most disappointing aspect. The opposition got to 1/33 of their 10 overs and we knew we had a big job in front of us. Morgs and Vik opened the bowling and both bowled a bit short and wide. Vanders came on and bowled well and took 6/57 off 23 overs. Last game was his first 5 wicket haul for the Club and this game went one better. Vinod bowled well with 2/15 off 4 overs. We got Beaconsfield 9/143 which meant the last wicket had to get 20 runs. They did pretty well but with 3 runs to go, their last batsmen went for the glory with a big slog, missed and we won the game.

Round 6 v Berwick Springs – win We had a treat and played at the home of cricket this game. Berwick Springs won the toss which was no surprise and they decided to bat which was also no surprise. They got to 188 all out off 55 overs. Once again, Vanders led the way with the ball taking 4/74 off 22 overs. He was supported by spin twins Gerard and Jude Burke. Jude was playing his first senior game and would have had a maiden first up if our fieldsman kept his legs together. No names but this style probably helped his family to 4 kids. Laurie chipped in with a wicket as well off whatever it was he was bowling. Our chase was built around Blair who came in at 3 and was there at the end. Cameo’s from Laurie(16) and Gerard(20) helped get the score to a comfortable 5/142. At 7/142, we were not so comfortable. Jude made a nuggety seven which with Blair put on 20. We got to 9/180 needing another 9 to win. Ryan held up his end and Blair summing up the situation went 6 and then 4 to end up on 74 when we won the game. Three in a row!

Round 7 v Parkfield – loss Back at Bondi no.5, we won the toss and batted. We didn’t bat very well against an attack that was handy but not great and made 122 off 42 overs leaving a lot of overs for the opposition. Top score was 31 to Cam Flisher in his only game for the year and no one else really gets a mention. We got a good start having them 3/33 but a good partnership got them to 4/81 overnight. A good effort would be required. Blake Fuller took two wickets early on the second day to give us a sniff at 7/91. Another partnership took them right up to our score of 122 only 7 down when Vanders made it very interesting taking 2/0 and they had one wicket left with scores tied. They got a single and then all out for 123. Vanders ended up with 4/51 and Blake 2/39 but disappointing to let a game slip we thought we could win.

Round 8 v Sandown Park – loss A return game against Sandown Park at Bondi Rd. We lost the toss and were in the field. The opposition was too good for us and made 318 off 56 overs. The best bowler was Keano with 2/24 off 10 overs, supported by Vanders with 2 wickets and one each to Kacey, Hamish Disco and Ryan. Andy Loeffel did a good job behind the stumps in trying conditions. Overnight we were 1/32. In the chase, we came up well short with 156. Disco top scored with 50 and Vanders put his best effort with the bat making 40. Their 64 run partnership was the best of the innings.

Round 9 v Buckley Ridges – loss On the hottest day of the season, I lost the toss again and we were in the field. Out at Noble Park Secondary College there was not much grass, breeze or shade. I had to leave early at 4:30 so the boys did a great job one short in hardest part of the day. Tim Miller in his first game in a long time took 3/38 off 18 overs. Hamish had a really good second spell and ended up with 3/60 off 11.3 overs and Zack Kerchie took 1/23 off 7 overs. We put up a good effort in the chase making 7/292 with Tim smashing the ball all over the place with 92 and Hamish had his best effort with the bat so far of 16 and part of a 45 run partnership. But we were beaten by a better side and the heat on the first day did not help.

Round 10 v Coomoora – loss We came up against the eventual premiers and found out why they had not lost. They bowled really well at the wickets and swung the ball around. We made 75 with Zac making a well compiled 13. Coomoora made 5/146 with Morgs taking 3 wickets. Zac also bowled well but we were trying to defend a small score. They put us back in and got the outright with no one performing with the bat.

Round 11 v Parkfield – loss Last game of the year and it was one dayer. We lost the toss and were in the field. The opposition went for it right from the start and made 175 off 32 overs. Being the last game, I threw the ball around and gave a few guys a bowl. Keano came back from a first over costing 16 to take 4/42 off 8 overs, Morgs took 2/15 off 5 overs and Ryan has his best senior figures with 3/2 off 1.4 overs. We did our best in the chase but came up short with 139. Razor got 19 and Kacey’s best score of 16.

Thanks to the Club for supporting the team throughout the year and thanks to all players for making themselves available. Hopefully, everyone got some enjoyment out of the season and will line up again next year. And thanks to Michelle for doing all of our afternoon tea every home game. Under 18 ‘20/20’ Competition The club participated in the SECA U/18 ‘20/20’ Competition for the 2016/17 season.

The games took place on a Wednesday afternoon and home games played at Mordialloc Secondary College.

It was a twelve (12) round season.

We had 7 wins and 5 losses during the season that saw us finish 4th and qualify for a semi-final against top of the ladder East Sandringham. Unfortunately the boys were not able to ‘taste the bisleri’ and were beaten in the semi - final.

It was a good effort to field a team during the season as the team was made up of under 16 players and under 18’s. During the season close to 30 players made themselves available and the club was always able to field a team.

Batting Average for the season - Tyler Brodie

Bowling Average for the season - Matt Moloney

A big thank you to ‘The Kiln’ that made it all happen for the team. Also to Steve ‘Cliffy’ Clifton, Bill ‘Blinky’ Sheldon, Rod ‘the rocket’ Love Linay, Paul ‘Gap Year’ Matthews and all those that helped with scoring and assisting. Your efforts were greatly appreciated.

Finally, thanks to the players that put on the show. Good fun had by all.

St Brigid's/St Louis CC Under 16A Cricket Report 2015/16 The U16 squad consisted of 24 players which put the club in the enviable position of being able to field two teams in the U16 Friday night competitions, SECA South U16A and SECA South U16B competitions. Throughout the season, the U16A team played 14 different players from the U16 squad of 24 including 2 first-year U16 and 12 second-year U16 players. 11 of these players played regular senior cricket, 9 of these playing 9+ senior games which has really helped them improve their patience at the crease, leadership techniques and bowling consistency. The mid-week U18 competition also provided further opportunities for the U16 players to hone their skills, with most of them playing in this competition throughout the season as well. Players: Matthew ‘Brucey’ Bruce, Callum ‘Cal’ Cater, Will 'Cliffy' Clifton, Lochie 'Buff' Davies, Jacob 'Gonny' Gonzales, Jasper 'Jas' Gordon, Ben ‘Benny’ Hannan, Cale 'Cake' Love-Linay, Ryan 'Fitz' Malcolm, Cody ‘Dak’ Matthews, Charlie ‘Chicken’ Palmer, Tim ‘Simmons’ Simone, Zac ‘Kerchy’ Kercheval, James ‘Jimmy’ Lovitt. Results: The U16A team played 9 rounds for the season in the Friday night competition recording 4 wins, 4 losses and 1 draw. Unfortunately the draw cost us 3 points which was the difference between making the finals and 6th place where we ended the season on the ladder. Round by Round: Round 1 (Ormond) – Coming off a short pre-season, both openers away and only 10 players available, we were totally outclassed by a dominant team who were the eventual Premiers. No highlights in a T20 match that saw us all out for 33 and only taking one wicket in Ormond’s 130 run innings. Round 2 (Beaumaris) – Another T20 saw Beaumaris post 4/118 in a fiery affair that led to some opposition parent complaints and a ‘please-explain’ from the league. Once again, without our regular opener, Lochie, we fell to 5/16 before rallying and a late charge from Callum (40*) and Cody (30) saw us fall only a few runs short at the end. One that got away. Round 3 (Kingston Heath/Le Page) – Finally our first 40-over game against a newly-formed combine team saw Lochie (40) get the team off to a great start, but the middle order didn’t do enough and despite a quick-fire 24* from Brucey at the end we were all out for 111. An inspired opening spell from Fitz (2/32) and Jasper (2/17) and several favourable LBW decisions early saw the door wide open when we had them 5/58, but 111 was never going to be enough and despite late wickets from Will (3/16) they cruised to a score of 170 to put the result beyond doubt. Round 4 (Dingley) – Another T20 and solid scores from Lochie (17), Cale (25), Fitz (17) and Brucey (20) got us to a competitive total of 117. On a dodgy, narrow pitch, despite bowling 32 extras, we managed to restrict Dingley to 107 to record our first win (and much needed confidence) for the season. Round 5 (East Sandy) – Another solid score from Lochie (27) got us off to a good start, but despite starts from Cale (19), Fitz (12), Callum (19) and Charlie (11) no-one else could go on with it and once again we finished on 9/111 from our 40 overs. Wickets were the key, but we couldn’t buy one as we watched only 4 of their players make their runs and pass our score with 6 wickets in hand. Round 6 (Elsternwick) – For the first time this season our top order fired with everyone in the top 6 making runs including Lochie (36), Will (27), Cale (49), Fitz (15), Charlie (19) and Callum (12). We finished 7/182 in our 40 overs and returned the following week to finish the job, Fitz ripping through the top order (3/8) and Will cleaning up the tail (4/16) to get them all out for 77 in 23 overs. Round 7 (Cluden) – The first game back in the new year was a 25-over one-dayer that saw Cluden open up with some big hitting and post a competitive score of 8/111 with no stand-out bowlers to mention. In our return innings we were cruising at 4/78 after 14 overs with Lochie (29*) and Cody (18*) at the crease, however, a sickening accident in the field saw an opposition player break his leg (and dislocate his ankle) so play was abandoned and a draw awarded. Another one that got away. Round 8 (Hampton) – Once again our top order fired and after compulsory retirements by Lochie (51*) and Cale (50*) left us with wickets in the bank, our lower order added some quick runs (Cody 28) to give us our highest score for the year, 8/221. Wickets were not easy to take and Hampton got off to a good start in their run chase but Cody’s 2/11 and Tim’s 2/33 snuffed out any chance of them overtaking our score, eventually falling 25 runs short. A great win against a higher placed team on the ladder. Round 9 (Beaumaris) – Coming up against our nemesis we saved our best performance for last as a very patient batting performance on turf saw us post 9/214 off our 40 overs. A second wicket stand of 90 runs from Will (34) and Cale (72*) set up the big total and allowed some batting freedom in the later overs from Cody (24) and Callum (18). The following week, early wickets from the opening bowlers Will and Fitz (2/10) put them on the back foot, and when Lochie (2/11) and Charlie (2/0) ripped through their middle order it was all over. The most satisfying and deserving win of the season. Award winners: Winners of the U16A SBSLCC awards for season 2016/2017 were: • Batting Award - Lochie Davies (ave 41.6) Lochie is a powerful left-handed opening batsman who shows great patience to build an innings according to the situation. Lochie's hard work during the off-season and at at training each session paid off this season with 2 not outs in his 7 innings. He scored 208 runs for the season with 51* his highest score. • Bowling Award - Will Clifton (ave 10.5) Will is a handy leg-spin bowler who finished the season opening the bowling to bamboozle the opposition openers with his flighted deliveries. His best figures were 4/16 and he had an economy rate of 4.1 runs per over which frustrated batsmen and often forced them to play risky shots in an attempt to make runs. • Coach's Award - Cody Matthews After a disappointing season the year before, it was clear that Cody had worked hard on his batting skills over the off-season as he really stepped up and became one of the most consistent performers for the season. Batting in the middle order, he became our 'goto' man when the team needed quick runs, or in other situations helped steady the ship when required. He was our 3rd highest run-scorer for the season scoring 117 runs at an average of 17, with his top score of 30 almost snatching the team an unlikely victory in Round 2. In the field, Cody is capable of taking some remarkable catches, pulling in a total of 7 for the season, and he has developed his spin bowling technique to produce either off-spin or leg-spin at any time.

Thanks: Thanks to the club for providing the opportunity to coach this talented group of players in their final year of junior cricket. Special mention to Laurie Reeves, Junior Co-ordinator, for his support and advice throughout the season. Thank-you to parents who helped with scoring and drinks/snacks for each game, for getting the boys to training and matches on time and for helping at training and providing general encouragement to the players (and coaches) throughout the season. Thanks to the U16A team who finished the season strongly and made the coaches, parents and the club extremely proud of your efforts throughout the season. We look forward to watching them develop further as they continue their senior cricket next season. Coaches: Rod Love-Linay, Steve Clifton

ST BRIGID/ST LOUIS U16B Annual Report

Below is a short summary of our matches:

Round 1 v Bonbeach - win The first game was a 20/20 match and we made 5/83 off the allocated 20 overs. The innings was held together by a debutant Pat Torpey from Aspendale with a terrific knock of 42 retired. Next top score was Mitch Reece with 10 batting at three. Fellow debutant Jimmy Lovett made 6 in a partnership of 36 with Pat. We got Bonbeach out for 46 with the wickets shared around. The best performance was 3/7 off 3 overs by Ben Denton with his leg spinners. A highlight was the fielding with 7 catches taken by the boys.

Round 2 - bye

Round 3 v Kingston Heath – win A great batting effort saw the team get 9/203 off forty overs with 6 batsmen getting into double figures. Tom and Zack Kercheval took the twin thing to the next level by both making 24. Blake Ross made a really good 41 and Pat Torpey followed up his first game with another top score of 44. We rolled the opposition for 124 winning by 79 runs. Hamish Balsillie led the bowling with 2/16, Ryan Glover took 2/8 off 3 overs and Jimmy was very economical with 1/3 off 5 overs.

Round 4 v Dingley – win Another 20/20 game, we made 88 off the 20 overs which we all thought would be competitive but not a big score. For the third game in a row, top score was Pat with 25. Good support came from Tom 16, Ben 15 and Hamish 10. We got the opposition out for 9/76 in a close game with a lot of the damage done in the field with 6 catches including Tim Simone’s first for the Club. Best bowling figures went to new player Liam Jordan with 2/1 off 2 overs. Two wickets also to Zack, Ben and Blake. Due to our good form, the Association decided to promote us to the B grade which was a real step up for the boys.

Round 5 v Highett – loss We batted first and were 2/0 after 2 overs. We never really recovered from that start and were all out for 119. Jimmy top scored with 45 and Blake made 34 but it was going to be a hard push from this position. We didn’t bowl or field particularly well and the opposition passed our score six down. The best bowling was from the Kerchies with Zack taking 1/7 off 3 overs and Tom 0/9 off 5 overs. Liam also tried hard with 0/4 off 3 overs.

Round 6 v East Sandringham – loss We batted first and the highlight was Blake Ross with the highest individual score of the year of 65. Support came from Pat 13, Ben 11, Zack 11 and Liam 11 helped the score to 143. However, we left 6 overs in the bank which was going to cost us. We started well with the ball getting the opposition 7/64 but a couple of good partnerships helped them get over the line eight wickets down. East Sandy batted well down the order but we didn’t bowl well with 18 wides not helping. Jimmy took 3 wickets and Ryan 2 but overall we let a game slip could have won.

Round 7 v Mordialloc – loss We batted first against the undefeated Mordialloc and struggled against a very good bowling line up. Our two best batsmen led the way with Pat getting 26 and Blake 17. They were supported by Ben with 10 and Hamish 8 no however we only scored 7/79(this was a 20/20 game). Mordialloc batted really well scoring 2/94 off 13 overs and the only 2 wickets lost were to run outs. We bowled okay but their batsmen were just too good. The highlight was Pat’s run out from the wicketkeeping position of their best bat at the bowler’s end with a great throw. He had a terrific year with the gloves.

Round 8 v Hampton – loss Another 20/20 game, this time away at Hampton. Playing on a slow ground we had Luke Burke playing for us after overcoming his knee injury. Luke opened the batting and top scored with 17. Tom was next with 15 and Hamish made 8 retired. We made 76 on a fairly slow ground against an accurate attack. We started well having the opposition 4/21 and then 7/57 but they ended up just getting past us to make 7/81.Tom bowled really well with 2/4 off 3 overs, Ben 1/4 off 3 overs and Hamish 2 wickets from his 2 overs. Overall a good effort against a good side. Round 9 v Cheltenham Park – loss Last game for the year and the boys relaxed a bit just to enjoy themselves. We made 94 with a few players batting well but not going on to get a good score. Jimmy made 16, Ben 15 and top score went to Zac with 19 retired. The opposition made the runs easily with 154. Blake had the best bowling figures with 2/9 off 5 overs. Nick McCarthy waited until the last game to have his best bowling effort taking 2/14 off 3 overs with good pitched up, accurate deliveries. Mitch Reece took the last wicket with 1/8 bringing the season to an end.

In summary, we won our first 3 games in Section C and after being promoted to Section B, lost the next 5. We made our feelings known the association of the re-grading without consultation. However, we didn’t play as well when we were promoted and could have won a couple of those games if we had applied ourselves. The simple matter is that we didn’t train very often and when we did it was not at an intensity to improve our cricket.

On behalf of the boys, I would like to thank Rod Lovitt, Steve McCarthy and Justin Balsillie with their assistance umpiring and scoring. And a very big thank you to Michelle Glover for taking on the team manager role when no one else would. With a very steep learning curve, Michelle learnt to score as well as trying to organise a team of 14 and 15 year old boys.

Finally, thanks to the Club for its continued support of junior cricket.

Scott Glover Coach U16B St Brigids St Louis Season Report 2016 / 2017 U14 B Grade - Premiers

What a great season! Our top U14 team deservedly ended up as premiers in the SECA Friday South B Grade competition. The boys have been building towards this great result for the past three seasons and it will hopefully be a springboard to greater things for many of them.

We finished the regular home and away season strongly, winning our last four games to end the season with 6 wins and 2 losses. The boys were challenged prior to the start of Round 7 to commit to each other that they would play in the grand final and to treat each game as a dress rehearsal for it. The results and statistics from Round 7 onwards tell the story of how well they took on that challenge.

The coaches continually banged on at the boys about scoring at 4 runs an over, trying to bowl teams out by applying scoreboard pressure and taking the chances when they came along. The stats seem to suggest that they listened and they got the results accordingly.

There was only one game throughout the season where we didn’t bat out our full allocation of overs (a loss…) and we bowled teams out in less than their allocated overs on 5 occasions.

It’s also important to point out that every single player made a solid contribution across the season. We are not a team that relies on two or three players. We had 5 boys score over 150 runs for the season and another two who scored over 100 runs for the season. Of the boys that played more than 2 games, everyone except our regular wicket keepers bowled more than 20 overs for the season. This is a great credit to our captain, Vikrant Vinodhram, who took great care to make sure every player was involved in every game, and a major reason why we won our semi-final and grand final in close games.

There were obviously some stand-out individual performances throughout the season and Andy “Mr Cricket” Loffel took out both the batting and bowling averages. This was just reward for an outstanding season. To cap off a great year, he also scored 47 in a man of the match performance in the grand final. I hear that he gets all his talent from his mother.

Congratulations also to Toby Hynes on scoring a century playing for the U14C’s in what must have been a memorable batting partnership! Both Andy Loffel and Rhys Gillard scored half centuries in the year, with both Vikrant Vinodhram and Harvey Burke getting agonisingly close.

It was especially pleasing to be able to rotate two players from the U14C’s – Riley Dempsey and Callum Amor - for two games each in the B’s throughout the year. We hope they got as much out of the experience as we did having them as part of the team. As part of the rotation, four players – Toby Hynes, Ilan Kaplan, Louis Bateson and Rhys Gillard – also played a game each in the U14C’s. These boys are to be applauded for not only scoring runs and taking wickets in those games (Toby made a century!) but providing leadership and support that will encourage their club mates to continue playing & enjoying their cricket.

The parents, siblings & extended families of the boys continue to provide fantastic support to the players and coaches. To have such a great turnout at every game makes such a huge difference to the players, fostering the supportive and inclusive environment that the club aspires to. Every single player gets a noticeable lift from having their family at the games. Aside from any on-field success, it is the life-long friendships being cultivated that brings the most satisfaction.

Thank you to everyone who helped throughout the season, especially Dave Lepair, our team manager and official scorer. Thanks also to Dion Lepair for being our super sub and 12th man for the finals.

Premierships don’t come along that often so we are so pleased that this group of fine young men managed to achieve it- enjoy it boys! Bring on next season.

Under 12 B’s 2016/17

The under 12 B’s had a very good season making the grand final which was a great achievement considering most of the teams we played were 1XI teams. The most pleasing aspect of the season was seeing the improvement of all the boys throughout the season. The highlight of the season was a fantastic semi final win against Le Page in front of their large crowd. The game went down to the last over and was a testament to how much the boys had improved during the season. Below is a brief run down of the players that represented the team this season:

Finn Chandler: The improvement in Finn over the last 2 years has been great to see. Finn had a very consistent season with the bat and was thoroughly rewarded with winning the batting averages. Finn was also a very consistent bowler who was extremely economical every week. Finn is also a superb fieldsman who took some great catches. Very coachable who has potential to become a very good cricketer. I look forward to watching Finn’s continued improvement.

Campbell Dakis: Campbell is a new player to the club. Campbell is a natural opener who holds up an end very well he also showed especially in the 2nd half of the season that he had an attacking side to his game especially in the semi final where he played a great opening innings. Campbell also bowls handy off spin which I hope he keeps at. A real pleasure to coach who always did the right thing by the team.

Ben Geisler: Ben played a few games for us when we short during the season and showed he was a handy player has a nice bowling action and also a very handy batsman. Hopefully with the games he played he found his appetite for the game again and comes back next season and plays the whole year.

Austin Gillard: Austin is a very talented cricketer in all facets of the game. Austin had a very good season with the bat especially in the first half of the season making some very good scores. Austin was probably a bit unlucky with the ball at stages during the majority of the season not getting rewarded for his good bowling, however during the finals series Austin was our best bowler getting a bagful of wickets. Austin is also a very handy wicketkeeper as well.

John Gilley: John started the season in the team and then had a stint with Kingsley’s team. John showed real character by coming back into the team for the finals and showed real improvement with both bat and ball. A real goer who gives it his all. I look forward to seeing John continue his improvement next season.

Ben Goodes: “Goodsey” was one of our big improvers during the season with the ball. Ben bowls a great line and very rarely bowls a bad ball. Ben was rewarded for his great improvement by winning the bowling averages. Ben also showed he can bat as well has a good technique with the bat and with size will become a handy batsman. One of the real characters of the team who made it really enjoyable to coach this team.

Jye Holloway: Jye forced his way into the team through very good performances with Kingsley’s team. Jye has a great technique with the bat and plays very well in particular for a boy his size. Jye made some handy runs during the season. Also a very handy bowler who bowls a very good line and a real goer in the field. A natural leader. Jye is a real pleasure to coach and no doubt will be one of the stars of the Under 12’s next season.

Seamus Lambe: Seamus joined the team on a full time basis after Xmas after having a run in Rod’s team. Seamus became a very important player in our team. Making some very important runs in particular against Mentone and also taking over the keeping duties full time which allowed Austin & Harvey to bowl more. Seamus had a very good game behind the stumps in the semi final taking some great catches and getting an important run out

Harvey Nash: Harvey is a very handy cricketer in all areas of the game. A handy middle order batsman who made some important runs during the season in particular in the semi final where he made a crucial 15 not out. Harvey also bowls handy off cutters getting some good wickets during the season in particular after Xmas. Harvey also kept at stages during the season. A real good team man who never missed a training session. Harvey was a pleasure to coach and I look forward to him continue his improvement next season.

Cayden Patterson: A new player to the club, Cayden was one of our big improvers during the season with the bat. Cayden has all the all shots and made some very impressive knocks in particular in the 2nd of the season. This culminated in the semi final where Cayden batted extremely well playing some beautiful cover drives and pull shots. A real character of the team and a real leader. I am sure Cayden will become an important member of the under 14’s next season. Charlie Pearson: Charlie was one of our impressive bowlers who bowled some very good spells during the season. Has a nice bowling action who got some very handy wickets in the grand final. Charlie is also a very good fieldsman who took some great catches during the season. Charlie is also a very good batsman who was probably a bit unlucky this season.

Ben Skeggs: One of our big improvers this season. Ben ended up getting the most wickets in the team this season. Ben was also our quickest bowler who bowled some hostile spells during the season. Has a nice action and with natural improvement will be a very handy bowler. Ben also showed he was a very handy lower order batsman making some good runs during the season in particular against Dingley when we ended up getting us over the line in the last over.

Brodie Templeton: A real goer who hits the ball very hard. Brodie made some very impressive knocks in the 1st half of the season. Brodie was a bit unlucky in the 2nd half of the season with the bat. Brodie played a very entertaining knock in the Grand Final. Brodie worked very hard on his bowling during the season and was reward by getting some good wickets in the finals. A real pleasure to coach.

The boys were a real pleasure to coach this season and it was probably the most enjoyable season we have had as coaches. I would like to thank all the parents that helped during the season. We had “buy in” from all parents this season with everyone assisting in scoring and umpiring. We also had a drink & fruit roster which the boys enjoyed at every morning tea break.

Congratulations to Ben Burke, Dave Gillard and Rod Love Linay in winning premierships with the Under 14A’s & Under 12 A’s. Whilst our boys did not win the flag there is no shame coming 2nd against a very good team in Aspendale who in hindsight should have been playing against our 12 A’s team.

Lastly we would like to thank Rod for his assistance in providing us with a player every week. The boys that came down, helped provided great leadership and enjoyed the experience. In particular we would like to thank Tyler Pearson who put his hand up to play for us in the semi final. Tyler had a great game and helped us get over the line. This was a real selfless act which shows what great kids we have coming through the ranks.

Look forward to seeing everyone next season.

Skeggsy & Brett Pearson Under 12Ds Annual Report

To assess the performance of the U12Ds we probably need to wait 2-3 years to be honest as we see their skills develop in this time and against kids their own standard. But what I am pleased to report on is that the 9 regular players we had for the season, all enjoyed their games each week, enjoyed each other’s company and improved from the very first game up until the end of the season - I am very confident of this! All had a great opportunity to participate with the bat, with the ball and in the field/keeping which is really what this grade is all about.

The team of first year players will all have gained experience from the opposition who generally outclassed them. Our season highlights came in the way of someone getting a wicket, or hitting their first boundary, not on the wins column.

From a batting perspective, we only failed to see out our 20 overs once for the season – tick. A focus on the batting was for the kids to spend time in the middle and protect their wicket. To be honest, this was the main goal I set them each week knowing where they were at in their development. Throughout the year we tried to get them to improve their running between wickets which came with mixed success but I am confident at the end of the season, this aspect of their game had improved. They also worked on their loud calling and waiting for the bad ball to put away. In the coming years these kids will have the patience and strength to put the bad ball away. They just need to stick with it.

Thomas Gellie was the best example of someone who just did everything to maintain his wicket. He proved very hard to dismiss each week and ended up being a deserved winner of our batting award with the most runs and highest average. He often batted with much younger brother Pat who playing under his age dug in against older kids which took a lot of courage to perform at his best. Mackenzie Manning was our wildcard with the bat. He has a great eye and played some key innings throughout the season. Raf Jennings was another who worked hard when he was batting and valued his wicket each week. He often opened and put on a good stand with fellow teammate Pat Henry. Pat also has very natural skills when it comes to batting and probably looked like the one to me, whose batting improved the most from the start of season to end of season. Angus Basillie proved to be our most solid middle order bat who unlike the other kids, was able to put the bad ball away when it came his way. His runs each week were invaluable.

In general with the ball, we did struggle but this was purely a consistency thing – putting 6 ball overs together. We did have some excellent performers with the ball including Aryan Verma who was our standout and our bowling award winner. We could always rely on Aryan to get at least 1 wicket a game and not go for many runs. Eva Hay also proved to be very consistent with a continual effort to keep the ball pitched up at all time which is very important when bowling. This brought her rewards with some key wickets. Josh Elliott is also worth noting with the ball who started off the year “chucking” the ball, and finishing the year with a nice rhythm and action. His bowling complimented his great season with the bat, another who rarely lost his wicket and retired most weeks.

Off the field, there was no shortage of parents to assist with scoring, umpiring, taking a few hit ups, carrying gear around, and most importantly – there to watch and support their kids. The kids do really get a buzz out of their parents watching. Pete Manning deserves special thanks as he was the one I could rely on for the scoring each week and always a job I didn’t have to worry about. He was also able to share some pre-race tips each Saturday morning which was also important.

Finally, I take this opportunity to thank the club for the opportunity to coach this team who were a pleasure to coach. I’d also like to thank the other training coaches that helped out during the week when us office workers are stuck in the office. I look forward to watching the kids improvement and success over the years to come.

Matt Elliott.
