    INTRODUCTION AND OVERVIEW HISTORY, DEMOGRAPHICS AND STATISTICS A Brief History The Town of Barnstable’s beginnings as a Town date back to a grant to two Europeans and their associates, and to its settlement, mainly by the Rev. John Lothrop and his parishioners from Scituate. The year was 1639, less than 20 years after the Pilgrims on the small sailing ship Mayflower landed first at Provincetown and then at Plymouth to begin the colonization of New England. These first settlers were mainly farmers. They had to be in order to survive. Peaceful dealings with the indigenous people began as early as the first land purchases. West Barnstable was obtained from the Native American Serunk and Barnstable from Nepoyetum in the first ten years; the Hyannis and Hyannis Port area from Yanno and Cotuit from Paupmumuck in the first twenty-five years. The price seemed to be right. For the whole Town, the cost was four coats, two small breeches, Barnstable County Courthouse three axes, three brass kettles, a broad hoe, a day’s plowing, one dwelling house and 20 pounds in English money. The office of selectmen had been established in 1665 and twenty years later, the Town became the County seat for Barnstable County. It wasn’t until the mid-eighteenth century that the Cape, including the Town of Barnstable, had become largely a maritime region. The oyster lured many settlers and the maritime industry was becoming a major employer. The years after the war of 1812 brought great expansion. The Town had developed many items for export including flax, corn, rye, wheat and onions, salt from burgeoning saltworks and dried cod from its fishermen.

    SUMMARY OF THE 2017 MASSACHUSETTS PIPING PLOVER CENSUS Bill Byrne, MassWildlife SUMMARY OF THE 2017 MASSACHUSETTS PIPING PLOVER CENSUS ABSTRACT This report summarizes data on abundance, distribution, and reproductive success of Piping Plovers (Charadrius melodus) in Massachusetts during the 2017 breeding season. Observers reported breeding pairs of Piping Plovers present at 147 sites; 180 additional sites were surveyed at least once, but no breeding pairs were detected at them. The population increased 1.4% relative to 2016. The Index Count (statewide census conducted 1-9 June) was 633 pairs, and the Adjusted Total Count (estimated total number of breeding pairs statewide for the entire 2017 breeding season) was 650.5 pairs. A total of 688 chicks were reported fledged in 2017, for an overall productivity of 1.07 fledglings per pair, based on data from 98.4% of pairs. The U.S. Atlantic Coast population of Piping Plovers has been federally listed as Threatened, pursuant to the U.S. Endangered Species Act, since 1986. The species is also listed as Threatened by the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife pursuant to Massachusetts’ Endangered Species Act. Population monitoring is an integral part of recovery efforts for Atlantic Coast Piping Plovers (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 1996, Hecht and Melvin 2009a, b). It allows wildlife managers to identify limiting factors, assess effects of management actions and regulatory protection, and track progress toward recovery.

The 2012 Recreation Commission members are: Joe O'Brien, Chairperson; Clyde Takala. Vice Chairperson; Rene King; Steve Mele; Katherine Pina; Richard Sawyer; and Kevin Turner.     Hyannis Athletic Association Proudly Supporting the January, 2021 Dear Friends: What a year 2020 was- who would have thought that the Cape Cod Baseball League would not play for the first time in so many years? We are hopeful that in the summer of 2021 we will see a baseball season with spectators and are planning for just that! Our roster is being signed, coaches are preparing to work with some of the best collegiate talent our nation has to offer and our volunteers are hard at work getting the field ready for your enjoyment. All of these efforts require time and money. Last year was particularly trying for so many individuals and businesses as they navigated the uncertainty of each passing day. The impact of our national pandemic has been felt far and wide, including within the Hyannis Athletic Association. We are an entirely volunteer run nonprofit organization that was formed to support the Hyannis Harbor Hawks baseball team. Without the revenue from seasonal attendance, merchandise sales, advertising and snack bar sales in 2020, the organization saw a significant decrease in available funds. Please consider becoming a member of our group and making a donation to help fund our various needs. Your membership will defray the cost of uniforms, equipment, supplies and transportation for our players while they showcase their tremendous talent in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League. Now more than ever we need your support as we put behind us a year without any baseball and look towards a new chapter in Harbor Hawk history. Help us keep our longstanding baseball tradition afloat.

Kassakian BCleanWater.org A Note from Join BCWC at The Helm These Upcoming Events After a cold wet spring, we were greeted by images like those on the cover of Ulva lactuca, an alga more commonly known as sea lettuce, all along the southern coast of Cape Cod. Unfortunately, regarding algae in our local waters, the future is now! While algae occurs naturally in our waters and around the world, it becomes a serious problem for the health of our waters as we overload our ecological systems with nitrogen and other nutrients. Warning signs were out in spades earlier this summer with the overabundance of algae so 8th Annual Paddle for the Bays RACE Cape Cod early in the season.
