FALMOUTHCOMMODORES.COM 5 Welcome to Falmouth!

The 2019 (CCBL) season is here and we’re ready to watch some great games on Arnie Allen Diamond at Guv Fuller Field. I had the pleasure of being the GM in Falmouth for the past six seasons, and I’ll always have a special place for this team, its coaches, board members, volunteers, and especially you, the fans. As the new league Commissioner, I look forward to seeing fantastic play with all 10 teams in the CCBL, from the multitude of elite college players that will descend on the Cape this summer. They will all have the chance to highlight their skills to the MLB scouts that are trying to identify the next superstar to draft but, more importantly (to me), each player will have the opportunity to simply play the game in the best Summer Collegiate Baseball League in the nation. The Cape League is populated with many dedicated volunteers that accomplish a plethora of tasks every year as they prepare the fi elds, procure gear and materials, and with all of the other logistics needed to turn out a fi rst-class product for all to enjoy. It’s a labor of love for every- one that is involved, and I wanted to take a quick moment to say thanks to one and all. If you’re interested in getting involved with our Falmouth team, ask one of the interns or team personnel how you can help. We’re always looking for new Host Families, Bat Boys, , Board Members, and other volunteers to join the ranks. Now, set up that lawn chair, grab some fries from Artie’s Concession Stand, sit back and enjoy the game. Go ‘Dores!

All the best,

Eric Zmuda, Commissioner Cape Cod Baseball League

6 2019 FALMOUTH COMMODORES Welcome to the Arnie Allen Diamond and the 2019 Cape League Season!

Wow, it doesn’t seem possible I am starting my33rd season with the league and here is where it all started. I and the entire league are so proud of what the Falmouth Commodores Organization has accomplished and the exciting new changes that will be happening this fall to make the Arnie Allen Diamond and Guv Fuller Field one of the best in the league. The Cape League would like to thank the Recreation Department, the Parks Department, the Board of Selectmen and the entire town for their support of this project. The Commodores committee has worked hard all year to provide its fans with the best summer college baseball in the country. I urge all of you who are reading this and enjoy attending Commodores games to be generous and donate to the team so they can continue to make Arnie Allen Diamond one of the best fi elds. It takes over $200,000 to fi eld a team every year in the league, and every dollar helps toward that goal. I would also like to encourage anyone who loves baseball to join the franchise. They are always looking for new members. We these teams with volunteers, and you can never have enough volunteers to fi eld a team and run an organization. They are always looking for host families as well. Having a player join your family for the summer is an experience you will never forget and a bond that lasts a lifetime. So, pull up your lawn chair, spread your blanket on the hill, have a hot dog and enjoy the great game of baseball.

Sincerely,

Chuck Sturtevant President Cape Cod Baseball League

8 2019 FALMOUTH COMMODORES FROM THE PRESIDENT In 2018, the Commodores had another great season, made possible by the support of our fans. We fi nished second in the Western Division, advancing into the second round until eliminated by the Wareham Gateman, the eventual winner. We had the good fortune of having Coach Jeff Trundy back for his 20th year as head coach and managed to keep his celebration a secret. At the end of the regular season, we learned the Commodores were selected by the Cape Cod Baseball League to receive the Commissioner’s Cup – the third time in four years. And we were sad to see our GM Eric Zmuda depart, but happy he became the League’s new Commissioner. The Commodores’ season starts on June 10th. Most of the planning and preparations took place during the fall, winter, and spring. Now it’s crunch time. We are ready, but as is typically the case, we still need additional host families to fi ll out the season. The most diffi cult task of most teams in the League is fi nding places for temporary players (about 2 weeks) or contract players (about 8 weeks) to live. If you or a friend would like to know what this is really all about to host a player, please contact us anytime. We will fi ll you in and put you in touch with host families to share their memories and experiences. Over the past months the Commodores’ Board has been hard at work writing up the bid proposal with the Town for use of Community Preservation Act monies to build new dugouts, a brick backstop, safety netting and poles, handicap accessibility around the fi eld, and new isitors bleachers. We began these improvements two years ago with the Press Box renovations, followed by the installation of a handicap vertical lift last June. Our plan is for the remaining work to be funded and completed by this December. You can follow the latest news on our website. When you arrive at Fuller fi eld this season, don’t be intimidated by the new Senior Center being built next to the Recreation Department. We are working with the Town to identify alternate parking locations and to install signage to guide you to the seating area. The Commodores also hope to establish a new concession stand, which we will undoubtedly be discussing at this time next year. Our goal is simple: we want to make Fuller Field one of the best baseball parks in the League. Come join the Commodores community for some great entertainment and the baseball experience.

Sincerely,

Mark Kasprzyk, President Falmouth Commodores

34 2019 FALMOUTH COMMODORES Where are they now? Former Commodores interns hit the big time

Mike Couzens Play-by-Play Braodcaster ESPN Mike Couzens is originally from White Plains, NY, and now lives in Olmsted Township, OH, a western suburb of Cleve- land. He received his BS degree in broadcast journalism from in 2010, and currently works at ESPN. After getting involved with his on-campus radio stations at Syracuse, WAER and WJPZ, Mike knew that he wanted to pursue play-by-play and was an intern with the Commo- dores for two summers (2008 and 2009). His family vaca- tioned each summer on Cape Cod in Brewster, and would attend either an Orleans Cardinals (he still thinks of them as the Cardinals!) or Brewster Whitecaps game. In fact, his father had a Cardinals hat that hung in their back hallway year-round in his family’s New York home. So Mike was fa- miliar with the history of the Cape League and the fact that at least a few teams were doing broadcasts. That winter of 2007-2008, he reached out to every team, and the late Pat Loftus, a former Commodores Board Member and Head of Broadcasting and Media, was one of the few people who responded. Mike had no play-by-play experience to speak of at that point, and Syracuse no longer had a baseball team. But timing was on his side, and Pat knew a Syracuse student who had done broadcasting for the Chatham As. While there, Mike began doing freelance work for both the Big Ten Network and ESPN. In August 2014, ESPN hired him full time. In his current role as a play-by-play broadcaster for ESPN, Mike has called college football, basketball, baseball, soft- ball, wrestling, and ultimate frisbee. He also has broadcast a handful of MLB games on the radio over the last two seasons. The internship with the Commodores was the cornerstone for everything that came afterward. It not only provided Mike with the baseball experience that he was unable to get in college, but also provided the confi dence for him to pursue his passion beyond the confi nes of his college campus. Without those two years in Falmouth, he feels he would not have been polished enough as a broadcaster to work at the Triple-A level that next season. Chris credits his early involvement with the Commodores for giving him exposure to high-quality amateur baseball play, and the mentoring he received from Matt Hyde for his exposure to major league scouting. As the General Manager intern he had a wide variety of responsibilities, including working closely with the team’s leadership to coordinate player contracts and arrivals at Falmouth, and assuring that the game day statistics sheet was up to date and printed for each home game. During this period and the subsequent year as a CCBL Communications Intern, he met a number of scouts and management personnel from various MLB teams. While his early experience with MLB internships was in baseball operations that focused on the video analysis of player performance, or the analyt- ical approach, he always had a desire to also be out in the ballpark identifying and evaluating amateur talent.
