It included Fieldstone Hall, a carriage house, a 9-hole golf course, a stone tower used to generate electricity and private game preserve. The estate was occupied by their son Roland and his wife Addie. Socially and politically prominent, the Nickersons entertained frequently and lavishly. It was not uncommon for the social event of the year to be held at Fieldstone Hall. In 1906, Fieldstone Hall burned to the ground. Construction began a year later and the new Mansion was completed in 1912. It closely resembled an English country manor with an eclectic blend of Renaissance Revival and Gothic themes. One of the Mansion‘s most striking features is the intricately carved oak staircase leading to the second floor. In 1945, the Nickerson Mansion was sold to the La Salette religious order where it served as a seminary and college for men. In 1979, Corcoran Jennison purchased the Mansion, Carriage House and the 52- acre parcel to eventually develop what Resort Guests and Club Members now know as Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club. Today, the Mansion and Carriage House have been enhanced to befit their historic character; including period furnishings and appropriate finishes to newly restored wood. There is 21,000 square feet of function space throughout the resort, Cape Cod’s only Nicklaus Design Golf Course, three exquisite restaurants, 338 guest rooms, eleven tennis courts, private beach, and five pools.

Cahoon – “The Village Artist” (1861-1951) “My aim is truth...to paint nature and people and things exactly as they are.” Born in Harwich, “Charlie D” was a popular and prolific painter known for carefully detailed, peaceful landscapes and seascapes of Cape Cod views. His ability to capture the mood and spirit of a bygone era has made him an important American representational artist. Like many young boys of his era, Charles went to sea as a cabin boy on his father’s fishing vessel. In his spare time, he taught himself to paint. He left the sea as a young man and worked for many years as a retoucher in a photography studio in Boston before devoting himself to painting. His paintings sold well and he received awards and attention, becoming a leading New England artist. Dividing his time between Boston and Harwich, he eventually returned to live full time in his hometown where he became an active member of the community. After suffering financial reverses during the Great Depression, he often paid his bills with a painting. Cahoon continued to paint almost to the time of his death. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the artist’s birth there will be a major exhibit of his paintings at Brooks Academy Museum from June 26 - October 8, 2011. www.charlesdcahoon.org.     A Cape League read By Laurie Higgins Friday, June 24, 2005 On a summer evening in 1989, as Steve Weissman and his fiancée Andrea were on their way to dinner in Chatham, they discovered a baseball game and stopped to watch. Both avid baseball fans, they were so impressed with what they saw, they decided to catch a later dinner and stayed to watch their first Cape Cod Baseball League game. In the 16 years since, Weissman married his fiancée, fathered four sons and watched a whole lot more Cape League baseball, enough in fact to write the recently-released book, "Beach Chairs and Baseball Bats: A Celebration of the Cape Cod Baseball League." As a person who does not know a lot about either baseball or the Cape League, I approached reading and reviewing this book with a trepidation that was undeserved. Weissman has written a fascinating book as accessible to the novice as it is to the die- hard fan that will surely delight both locals and tourists equally. A lot of the credit for this is due to Weissman's conversational writing style that is comprehensive without getting bogged down. He incorporates both his own research and observations with interviews and quotes from everyone involved in the league, from players, coaches and organizers to host families, fans and sports journalists. The result is a lively narrative that covers every aspect of the league in fascinating detail. He explains the intricacies of the league such as how the teams are put together and how games are scheduled to accommodate issues of lighting, equality of weekend home games and opportunities for scouts to make the rounds.
