Denmark - Coach profile

Morten Olsen Date of birth: 14 August 1949 Nationality: Danish Playing career: B 1901, Cercle Brugge KSV, RWD Molenbeek, RSC Anderlecht, 1. FC Köln Coaching career: Brøndby IF, 1. FC Köln, AFC Ajax, Denmark • A commanding central defender, he played most of his club football in Belgium, winning three national titles and the UEFA Cup with Anderlecht during a six-year spell from 1980–86. • Twice crowned Danish Player of the Year, he was captain of the legendary 'Dynamite' team of the mid-1980s that reached two successive UEFA European Championships and the 1986 FIFA World Cup; became the first Danish footballer to collect 100 caps in an international career spanning 19 years. • Went straight into coaching after hanging up his boots and proved an immediate hit, leading Brøndby to two Danish championships and to the semi-finals of the 1990/91 UEFA Cup – the furthest any Danish club had progressed in Europe. Moved on to coach old side Köln and then, following a two-year break, Ajax, where, assisted on the field by his ex-Denmark team-mate Michael Laudrup, he secured a Dutch league and cup double. • Appointed Denmark coach in 2000 and guided the team to the finals of the 2002 World Cup and UEFA EURO 2004. He retained the position despite a failure to qualify for the next two major tournaments. Further success followed as Denmark topped both their 2010 World Cup preliminary group, celebrating qualification with a 1-0 victory over Sweden in his 100th match at the helm, and their UEFA EURO 2012 section. • Could not steer the side beyond the initial stage of either tournament, but in spite of Demark missing out on the 2014 World Cup he was awarded a two-year contract extension encompassing the UEFA EURO 2016 campaign.

Ireland qualified for their first major tournament in the 1988 UEFA European Championship, opening their campaign with a famous 1-0 win against England thanks to Ray Houghton's early header. They then held the Soviet Union 1-1 and Charlton's side were only edged out for a semi-final place in West Germany by an 82nd-minute goal for the Netherlands. Ireland narrowly missed out on the final tournament in 1992 and lost play-offs to the Netherlands and Turkey in 1996 and 2000 respectively. They finished third in their qualifying groups for both 2004 and 2008 but made the 2012 finals; beaten to an automatic place by Russia, they defeated Estonia in the play-offs. They had performed consistently throughout, at one point going eight matches (friendlies included) without conceding, establishing a new national record. Trapattoni's side arrived in Poland and Ukraine 14 games unbeaten, but that was soon forgotten as they lost 3-1 to Croatia, 4-0 to Spain and 2-0 to Italy. In his second spell at the helm, Olsen came close to qualifying Norway for UEFA EURO 2012 but they missed out on a play-off spot on goal difference. Since then, they have come close to qualifying several times but managed to do so only once, in 2000, when the highlight was a 1-0 win against Spain in Rotterdam. Two late Spain goals in the last group game against Yugoslavia denied Norway a place in the quarter-finals. Norway did reach the play-offs for UEFA EURO 2004, where Spain proved too strong, while a home defeat at the hands of Turkey ended their quest for a place at the 2008 finals. A subsequent return to club football with Rosenborg in 2005 was ill-fated: he quit the next year, having been signed off with health problems. • Returned to coaching, again with Tromsø, in 2008, securing some solid league finishes and two attempts at UEFA Europa League qualifying before heading abroad for the first time in his career to take the reins at Swedish outfit Djurgården in 2013. • Appointed Norway coach in September 2013 after Egil Olsen agreed to step down, penning a four-year contract.

17 UEFA EURO 2016 - PLAY-OFF DRAW Sunday 18 October 2015 - 11.20CET (11.20 local time) Press kit Nyon, Switzerland Slovenia Slovenia - Team profile

Best result: group stage 2000 Coach: Srečko Katanec Leading scorer: all time – Zlatko Zahovič (35); current – Milivoje Novakovič (31) Most appearances: all time – Boštjan Cesar (87); current – Boštjan Cesar (73) Association formed: 1920 Nickname: Fantje (The Boys) Where they play: Stadion Ljudski vrt, Maribor; ŠRC Stožice, A former Yugoslav republic, Slovenia began competing as a separate entity in 1992 and caused a surprise by qualifying for both the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup at the second attempt. Led by coach Katanec and galvanised by star forward Zahovič, the team made it to the major tournaments of 2000 and 2002 thanks to play-off victories but did not progress beyond the group stage in either. Since that halcyon period there has been just one further qualification, via another play-off, with Russia defeated en route to an appearance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where again they were eliminated early. EURO pedigree Matches played Overall: P67 W25 D15 L27 F86 A82 Final tournament: P3 W0 D2 L1 F4 A5 Qualifying: P64 W25 D13 L26 F82 A77 A UEFA member since 1992, UEFA EURO 2000 was the best of Slovenia's five UEFA European Championship qualifying campaigns to date, the nation making it to the finals following a 3-2 aggregate win against Ukraine in the play-offs. Katanec's side acquitted themselves well in Belgium and the Netherlands, drawing against Yugoslavia and Norway either side of a 2-1 loss to Spain. That success was almost repeated at the next time of asking when Slovenia finished second in their UEFA EURO 2004 qualifying section, but Croatia proved too strong for Bojan Prašnikar's team in the play-offs, winning 2-1 on aggregate. After those campaigns, UEFA EURO 2008 and UEFA EURO 2012 were comparatively disappointing, Slovenia finishing sixth and fourth in their respective qualifying sections. Memorable EURO matches 13/06/2000: Yugoslavia 3-3 Slovenia, UEFA EURO 2000 group stage At one point Slovenia were 3-0 up and a man to the good on their finals debut, but Yugoslavia rallied. 17/11/1999: Ukraine 1-1 Slovenia, UEFA EURO 2000 play-offs 's goal in snowy Kyiv completed Slovenia's play-off success, sparking wild celebrations. 07/09/1994: Slovenia 1-1 Italy, EURO '96 qualifying Katanec's final game as a player marked a bright start for Slovenia in their first EURO campaign. Did you know? Slovenia's first international match after the break-up of the former Yugoslavia was a 1-1 friendly draw in 1992 with Estonia, also playing their first game since independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union. *Last updated on 13/10/15

EURO finals: The UEFA European Championship was a four-team event in 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976 (when the preliminary round and quarter-finals were considered part of qualifying).

From 1980 it was expanded to an eight-team finals and remained in that format in 1984, 1988 and 1992 until 1996, when the 16-team format was adopted. UEFA EURO 2016 is the first tournament to be played as a 24-team finals.

Records of inactive countries A number of UEFA associations have been affected by dissolution or splits of member associations. For statistical purposes, the records of these inactive countries have been allocated elsewhere: therefore, all Soviet Union matches are awarded to Russia; all West Germany – but not East Germany – matches are awarded to Germany; all Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro matches are awarded to Serbia; all Czechoslovakia matches are allocated to both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Abandoned/forfeited matches For statisical purposes, when a match has been started and then abandoned but later forfeited, the result on the pitch at the time of abandonment is counted. Matches that never started and were either cancelled or forfeited are not included in the overall statistics.
