Since qualifying for the 1984 finals at England's expense, they have competed in every tournament bar one (2008) and memorably lifted the Henri Delaunay Cup in neighbouring Sweden in 1992, the team having failed to qualify in the first instance before being reinstated in place of Yugoslavia. The famous 1980s 'Dynamite' side starring, among others, strike duo Preben Elkjær and Michael Laudrup, is fondly remembered, not least as the first Denmark team to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. There have been three further participations since then, including a quarter-final at France '98. EURO pedigree Matches played Overall: P140 W60 D32 L48 F215 A178 Final tournament: P27 W7 D6 L14 F30 A43 Qualifying: P113 W53 D26 L34 F185 A135 Denmark's finest hour came in Sweden after the suspension of Yugoslavia handed them a second chance they grasped with both hands. Having had just ten days to prepare they eliminated England and France in the group stage, then the Netherlands in a semi-final shoot-out. Goals from John Jensen and Kim Vilfort saw off Germany in the showpiece. Denmark were no strangers to the latter stages of the competition, though, having reached the last four in 1964 and 1984. Morten Olsen's charges again overcame the initial hurdle in 2004, but three Czech Republic goals early in the second half ended their interest in the quarter-finals. Having failed to qualify for the 2008 edition, Denmark returned in 2012 but fell at the group stage despite upsetting the Netherlands in their opening match. Memorable EURO matches 22/06/04: Denmark 2-2 Sweden, UEFA EURO 2004 group stage Jon Dahl Tomasson twice gave Denmark the lead as a draw took them through to the last eight. 26/06/92: Denmark 2-0 Germany, EURO '92 final Goals from Jensen and Vilfort completed the fairy tale for Richard Møller Nielsen's last-minute entrants. 19/05/84: Denmark 3-2 Belgium, 1984 UEFA European Championship group stage Trailing 2-0 after 40 minutes, Sepp Piontek's side recovered to book a place in the semis. Did you know? Denmark have appeared in all 15 UEFA European Championship qualifying competitions, playing their first game in September 1959, a 2-2 draw with Czechoslovakia in Copenhagen. *Last updated on 13/10/2015 3 UEFA EURO 2016 - PLAY-OFF DRAW Sunday 18 October 2015 - 11.20CET (11.20 local time) Press kit Nyon, Switzerland Denmark - Coach profile Morten Olsen Date of birth: 14 August 1949 Nationality: Danish Playing career: B 1901, Cercle Brugge KSV, RWD Molenbeek, RSC Anderlecht, 1. FC Köln Coaching career: Brøndby IF, 1. FC Köln, AFC Ajax, Denmark • A commanding central defender, he played most of his club football in Belgium, winning three national titles and the UEFA Cup with Anderlecht during a six-year spell from 1980–86. • Twice crowned Danish Player of the Year, he was captain of the legendary 'Dynamite' team of the mid-1980s that reached two successive UEFA European Championships and the 1986 FIFA World Cup; became the first Danish footballer to collect 100 caps in an international career spanning 19 years. • Went straight into coaching after hanging up his boots and proved an immediate hit, leading Brøndby to two Danish championships and to the semi-finals of the 1990/91 UEFA Cup – the furthest any Danish club had progressed in Europe. Moved on to coach old side Köln and then, following a two-year break, Ajax, where, assisted on the field by his ex-Denmark team-mate Michael Laudrup, he secured a Dutch league and cup double. • Appointed Denmark coach in 2000 and guided the team to the finals of the 2002 World Cup and UEFA EURO 2004. He retained the position despite a failure to qualify for the next two major tournaments. Further success followed as Denmark topped both their 2010 World Cup preliminary group, celebrating qualification with a 1-0 victory over Sweden in his 100th match at the helm, and their UEFA EURO 2012 section. • Could not steer the side beyond the initial stage of either tournament, but in spite of Demark missing out on the 2014 World Cup he was awarded a two-year contract extension encompassing the UEFA EURO 2016 campaign. 4 UEFA EURO 2016 -
