  • The RAVE Vertex Reconstruction Toolkit: Status and New Applications
The RAVE Vertex Reconstruction Toolkit: status and new applications Wolfgang Waltenberger, Fabian Moser and Winfried Mitaroff with contributions by Bernhard Pflugfelder and Herbert V. Riedel Austrian Academy of Sciences, Institute of High Energy Physics Nikolsdorfer Gasse 18, A-1050 Vienna, Austria, Europe Outline: • The RAVE toolkit and VERTIGO framework in short; • Improved track reconstruction by RAVE’s smoother; • Progress on the implementation of kinematics fitting; • Summary: present status and outlook to the future. W. Waltenberger, F.Moser, W. Mitaroff ALCPG ’07, Fermilab: 22–26 Oct. 2007 Reminder of the main goals 1. Creation of an extensible, detector-independent toolkit (RAVE) for vertex reconstruction, to be embedded into various environments: • RAVE = “Reconstruction (of vertices) in abstract versatile environments”; • The toolkit includes both vertex finding (a pattern recognition task a.k.a. track bundling) and vertex fitting (estimation of the vertex parameters and errors); • Synergy used: starting point was the old CMS software (ORCA) which has recently been refactored and ported to the new CMS framework (CMSSW); • Principal algorithmic assets are robustified reconstruction methods with estimators based on adaptive filters, thus downweighting the influence of outlier tracks; • RAVE is foreseen to stay source-code compatible with CMSSW, but thanks to its generic API may easily be embedded into other software environments. 2. Creation of a simple stand-alone framework (VERTIGO) for fast implemen- tation, debugging and analyzing of the core algorithms: • VERTIGO = “Vertex reconstruction tools and interfaces to generic objets”; • Framework tools available: Visialization, Histogramming, a Vertex Gun for generating artificial test events, an LCIO input event generator, and a Data Harvester & Seeder for flexible I/O.

  • Railway Employee Records for Colorado Volume Iii
RAILWAY EMPLOYEE RECORDS FOR COLORADO VOLUME III By Gerald E. Sherard (2005) When Denver’s Union Station opened in 1881, it saw 88 trains a day during its gold-rush peak. When passenger trains were a popular way to travel, Union Station regularly saw sixty to eighty daily arrivals and departures and as many as a million passengers a year. Many freight trains also passed through the area. In the early 1900s, there were 2.25 million railroad workers in America. After World War II the popularity and frequency of train travel began to wane. The first railroad line to be completed in Colorado was in 1871 and was the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad line between Denver and Colorado Springs. A question we often hear is: “My father used to work for the railroad. How can I get information on Him?” Most railroad historical societies have no records on employees. Most employment records are owned today by the surviving railroad companies and the Railroad Retirement Board. For example, most such records for the Union Pacific Railroad are in storage in Hutchinson, Kansas salt mines, off limits to all but the lawyers. The Union Pacific currently declines to help with former employee genealogy requests. However, if you are looking for railroad employee records for early Colorado railroads, you may have some success. The Colorado Railroad Museum Library currently has 11,368 employee personnel records. These Colorado employee records are primarily for the following railroads which are not longer operating. Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad (AT&SF) Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad employee records of employment are recorded in a bound ledger book (record number 736) and box numbers 766 and 1287 for the years 1883 through 1939 for the joint line from Denver to Pueblo.

DELAGE CLUB OF AUSTRALIA (Inc) December 2014 Assn A0022114G Adieu Gerald (Dooly) Baker - bon vivant On 30 September, St Peter’s Catholic Church in Toorak was overcrowded with a sad but appreciative throng celebrating the life of Dooly Baker on what would have been his 72nd birthday. The eulogies by friends and colleagues covered Dooly’s childhood and education, his successful and varied business career, and a very active social life centred on love, family, friends, and the diverse groups with whom he shared interests, food, wine and good times. Dooly’s daughters Alex, Philippa and Kate broadened the picture with details of his great interest and skill in Ianguages, literature and the arts. Alex explained that Dooly surprised her Di-Lorenzo parents-in- law with a speech in Sicilian. Kate, who shares her father’s interests in many of these fields and in particular in matters Gallic, described how in recent years Dooly embraced a new French mistress – the lovely CO Delage, a pleasure generally shared with Angie. In recognition of this passion, those attending included a significant number of Delage and Vintage members. The Perns came in the DE tourer, and I gave the D6/70s an outing. Walking out of the church, I encountered a smiling Mark Burns rejoicing in the fact that he survived his second visit to a Catholic place of worship without the ghost of Calvin striking him speechless or some worse fate. Perhaps the spirit of that other Celt from across the Irish Sea – the reformed Ian Paisley - had played a role? Most of us adjourned to the Australia Club where Dooly had clearly made his mark as a member.

The Paradox of Race-Conscious Labels Leslie Yalof Garfield† “I would rather be a man of paradoxes than a man of prejudices.”1 INTRODUCTION What a difference a label makes! In the recently decided Fisher v. Texas2 case, a majority of the Supreme Court defined Texas’s Top Ten Percent Law as a race-neutral means of achieving viewpoint diversity.3 This law, enacted in its original form by the Texas legislature in 1997, guarantees admission to the state’s leading public universities for every Texas student who graduates in the top 10% of his or her high school graduating class.4 The goal of this law is to achieve viewpoint diversity in the state’s higher education systems, which it does by relying on Texas’s diverse school system, composed of individually homogenous schools drawn on geographic boundaries, to collectively produce a diverse entering class. By categorizing the Top Ten Percent Law as race-neutral rather than race-conscious, the Court excused Texas from defending its diversity initiative against a rigorous equal protection challenge, leaving the Law intact.
