Baage, Doctor of Philosophy, 2012 Directed By: Professor Dr. Caroline Eades, Department of French and Italian The island trope is a recurring theme in colonial travel literature but how do contemporary authors of the French-speaking world conceptualize the island in the 20 th and 21 st century? My project examines the complexity of the notion of islandedness in the works of three contemporary authors of Francophone islands outside the French Caribbean: Corsican author Marie Ferranti, Réunionese author Jean-François Samlong, and Tahitian author Chantal Spitz. Drawing on different discourses of postmodernity including intertextuality, supermodernity, the hyperreal, the time- image, and violence, I argue that the island becomes an important site from which ethnography, the crisis of time and meaning, and techniques of resistance are negotiated and constructed. In my analysis, I build on various foundational theories of cultural contact from the French Caribbean and Francophone Africa to account for the diversity and difference of the non-French Caribbean island text. Particular attention will be given to the literary text as a tool to reflect upon a colonial past and neo- colonial present in three different contexts of the Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the South Pacific. THE HISTORY OF HORROR LITERATURE IN AFRICA IN THE 20TH CENTURY Horror literature has not been restricted to the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe, despite what critics and historians of the genre assume. Most countries which have a flourishing market for popular literature have seen natively-written horror fiction, whether in the form of dime novels, short stories, or novels. This is true of the European countries, whose horror writers are given at least a cursory mention in the broader types of horror criticism. But this is also true of countries outside of Europe, and in countries and continents where Western horror critics dare not tread, like Africa. Now, a thorough history of African horror literature is beyond the time I have today, so what follows is going to be a more limited coverage, of African horror literature in the twentieth century. I’ll be going alphabetically and chronologically through three time periods: 1901-1940, 1941-1970, and 1971-2000. I’d love to be able to tell you a unified theory of African horror literature for those time periods, but there isn’t one. Africa is far too large for that.

    ‘HYBRIDITY’ IN THE NOVELS OF ANANDA DEVI Oulagambal Ashwiny Kistnareddy Licence, BA. Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Master of Philosophy July 2010 Abstract Hybridity is a term that has garnered a great deal of attention in the postcolonial world and has considerable critical purchase in the contemporary world. Its proponents, from Bakhtin (1981) and Bhabha (1994) to more recent theorists of hybridity in its various forms are many. However, it also has many dissidents. Hybridity’s ambiguous status as a colonial, negative term that has been reappropriated to undermine notions of purity and essentialism, can be quite problematic. Nevertheless, in its more positive aspects, it can prove to be quite enabling for postcolonial intellectuals like Ananda Devi. Devi expresses this point of view in an interview where she speaks of herself as being ‘hybride dans le bon sens du terme’ (Indes Réunionnaises 2003). This thesis examines Devi’s novels in order to gauge the extent to which these can be read through the lens of hybridity, especially given the recent reference to texts emanating from the Indian Ocean as being hybrid (Hawkins 2007, Prabhu 2007). Chapter One investigates the positive aspects of hybridity that Devi underlines in her interview, namely her ability to use the different cultures and traditions at her disposal in her writing. The chapter demonstrates the linguistic hybridity (Bakhtin 1981) and formal hybridity of the novels, which is the result of Devi’s own upbringing in multicultural society. The subsequent two chapters focus on what can be interpreted as the negative aspects of hybridity.

Malone University of Missouri-Rolla Born on April 9, 1863, in Kingstown, Ireland, Henry de Vere Stacpoole grew up in a household dominated by his mother and three older sisters. William C. Stacpoole, a doctor of divinity from Trinity College and headmaster of Kingstown school, died some time before his son's eighth birthday, leaving the responsibility of supporting the family to his Canadian- born wife, Charlotte Augusta Mountjoy Stacpoole. At a young age, Charlotte had been led out of the Canadian backwoods by her widowed mother and taken to Ireland, where their relatives lived. This experience had strengthened her character and prepared her for single parenthood. Charlotte cared passionately for her children and was perhaps overly protective of her son. As a child, Henry suffered from severe respiratory problems, misdiagnosed as chronic bronchitis by his physician, who in the winter of 1871 advised that the boy be taken to Southern France for his health. With her entire family in tow, Charlotte made the long journey from Kingstown to London to Paris, where signs of the Franco-Prussian War were still evident, settling at last in Nice at the Hotel des Iles Britannique. Nice was like paradise to Henry, who marveled at the city's affluence and beauty as he played in the warm sun. After several more excursions to the continent, Stacpoole was sent to Portarlington, a bleak boarding school more than 100 miles from Kingstown.

Mais la littérature a-t-elle un regard spécifique sur le continent africain ? Quel est ce regard ? Comment les écrivains, africains ou non, ont-ils appréhendé et saisis- sent-ils la réalité africaine d’hier et d’aujourd’hui ? Comment la recréent-ils ? Quelle parole, littéraire, politique, polémique, journalistique, portent-ils sur elle ? C’est à ces questions que la collection L’Afrique au cœur des lettres veut répon- dre. En recherchant et en rééditant ce que les écrivains, célèbres ou moins connus, ont dit de l’Afrique, de son histoire et de son esprit. En publiant ce que les auteurs littéraires écrivent d’elle aujourd’hui sous diverses formes : du journal de voyage à l’essai, en passant par les articles de presse ou les interventions politiques. Enfin, la collection L’Afrique au cœur des lettres entend présenter, sous un regard critique, des analyses de la parole des écrivains : comment celle-ci s’intègre dans leur œuvre, comment et pourquoi ont-ils écrit sur l’Afrique ?
