Signed……………………………………(candidate) Date………………………………… III IV ABSTRACT The aim of this research is to reconstruct a metaphysical interpretation of the philosophy of history with regard to the spirit of historical thinking. The spirit of historical thinking is to emphasize the relation between what happened in the past and historical thinking about the past in the present. However, current philosophies of history, which are largely epistemologically oriented, have not adequately explored this relation. In order to investigate the relation between past and present, I refer to an Aristotelian philosophy of practice and politics, and adapt it to the domain of the philosophy of history, and argue the case for a metaphysical science of history. A metaphysical science of history contains two primary parts. They are the part on physis and the part on technê/phronēsis. With regard to physis that metaphysically investigates the natural generating progress of entities, I argue that the existence of historical events can be understood as a natural developing progress in which the events are ordered in a chronological sequence. Such chronological sequence is essentially the physis of history in the metaphysical sense (I characterize it as ‘Ordnungszeit’). For the part on technê/phronēsis, I demonstrate that Aristotelian knowing is for itself an action of knowing, which is located beyond a given temporal position in the past to both the past and the thinking present, and indicates the fundamental Beingness of history (I characterize it as ‘Geschehenszeit’). Finally I conclude that the historical eudaimonia, namely the pursuing of the completeness of historical knowledge, is the final presentation of actualizing Geschehenszeit, as it bridges the past and the present in accordance to the spirit of historical thinking. As the centennial of the book approaches it perhaps ought to be said that as we press further into the 21st century the 'world-views' of intellectuals in the early 20th century like Heidegger's might well be expected to fade in importance in the face of the onslaught of new technologies and ‘ways of life’ which has characterized this century to date. Yet in many ways Heidegger’s first book, though its famous 'difficulty' is not much overstated, is one of the most enduring landmarks of philosophical modernity: a book which for a long time gave 'those with eyes to see and ears to hear' a new way of thinking that ignored neither the human predicament nor the shape of the cosmos. Furthermore, it almost does not need saying that the book's importance for philosophy in general exceeds the numbers of those who explicitly subscribe to its tenets.

Thought and knowledge are essentially activities on the part of the subject understood anthropologically or transcendentally. 2. The history of knowledge exhibits teleological progress towards a better and more comprehensive account of its objects. In contrast to traditional epistemology, both Heidegger and Foucault show how thought and knowledge are not just acts, which can be attributed to the subject but also events which elude any such subjective characterization. They also show us how the history of knowledge exhibits ruptures when the very character of knowledge undergoes drastic transformation in the course of history. The dissertation concludes by hinting at how these new accounts of thought and knowledge have the potential to shake the very foundations of epistemology and lead us to a new framework for discussing the most basic questions of epistemology, towards an epistemology of ruptures.

    Some Aspects of the Philosophy of Science in Japan By Hiroshi NAGAI I Philosophy in its strict sense had not been in Japan until her mod ern age, which broke out at Meiji Revolution about one hundred years ago. It must be remembered that the proper notion of philosophy has its historical origin in ancient Greece and that its development is performed on the basis of Greek tradition in Western Europe. From this point of view we Japanese have been in quite different circum stances from those of European peoples, whose philosophies, I presume, for all varieties in their character and trend, are united in a common mental circle, so that they are on intimate terms with one another. Of course, as generally recognized, it is an irresistibly clear fact that Buddhism and Confucianism had influenced intrinsically on the mental life of Japanese people for a long time, but their doctrines may not be called philosophic in the proper sense. We prefer to consider them respectively a sort of religious speculation or peculiar worldly Wisdom rather than as philosophy. This state of affairs will be said to be due to the special historical and geographical conditions in which our country was so long situated that we could hardly take any chance of international contact with European peoples and their philosophical thoughts. As the leading and decisive one of those conditions we can especially point out the political and social influences of the feudal -63- 64 government, which was established by the Tokugawas and lasted for almost three hundred years; its political absolutism strictly prohibited our countrymen living in four small islands from taking foreign informations.

    Internationale Walter Benjamin Gesellschaft Alfredo Lucero-Montano Benjamin’s Political Philosophy of History 1. The reflection on history seems a constant theme in Benjamin’s thought. Since his early works to his last texts, this concern constitutes the conducting thread, which grants to his diverse work an underlying unity. For Benjamin, the fundamental question seems to be how to interweave “the theory of historiography with the theory of the real course of history,” how “history itself is referred to its ‘making’—political praxis,” [Tiedemann 1983-4, 91] that is, how to generate a certain interrelationship between history and politics. This question refers us not to the nature of the historical process but to the way we acquired historical knowledge, not to historiography but to philosophy of history. Here the implicit issue is the construction of a new concept of history. Benjamin draws his concept of history through three differentiated answers: In the first phase, On Language as Such and on the Language of Man (1916) and The Task of the Translator (1923), he propounds a theological paradigm of history. Later, in The Origin of German Tragic Drama (1928), he develops, concerning history, an aesthetics paradigm. And finally, starting from 1925-1926, which marks his Marxist turn, Benjamin steadily develops a political paradigm of history, which its clearer claim is The Arcades Project (1927-1940) and the theses On the Concept of History (1940).     The Lack of Historism: the Leftists’ Experience and its Contemporary Meaning Vlad Navitski, M. Phil., lecturer European Humanities University, Vilnius, Lithuania The article is devoted to the historical views of the different branches of the leftists in the last century and a half. But beyond this content a foundational – and constitutional for this paper – interest lies. I tend to show that theoretical stances of the leftists on history not only predetermined their own practice (and, surely were influenced by it), but also are exercised in the worldwide contemporary social and cultural trends, not related to the leftists practice at all. Among them globalization, practices of the multiculturalism/fundamentalism and identity politics should be mentioned in the first place. Key words: historicity, borders, transcendent order, subjectivity, modernity, temporality, technics Introduction In general, the peculiar imitation of the leftists’ practices – once specific for them – by the contemporary social trends was explicitly clarified by the leftists themselves (Gilles Dauvé)1 and by the more moderate researches (Jean Baudrillard). But, to my mind, in order to see what are the reasons or causes of such imitation we have to go further than just to identify this doubling with the cunning of the society of consumption, assuming even previously contradictory practices for its own sake (Baudrillard).2 Similarly, we shouldn’t stop on the mere statement of this doubling as the ridiculous parallelism (Dauvé). Challenging apparatus theory of the 1970s, which had presumed a basic uniformity and historical continuity in cinematic style and spectatorship, the ‘historical turn’ of recent decades has prompted greater attention to transformations in technology and modes of sensory perception and experience. In my view, while film scholarship has subsequently emphasized the historicity of moving images, from their conditions of production to their contexts of reception, it has all too often left the very concept of history underexamined and insufficiently historicized. In my project, I propose a more reflexive model of historiography—one that acknowledges shifts in conceptions of time and history—as well as an approach to studying film in conjunction with historical-philosophical concerns. My project stages this intervention through a close examination of the ‘crisis of historicism,’ which was widely diagnosed by German-speaking intellectuals in the interwar period.

RHETORICAL BEING: A METAPHYSICS OF FREEDOM AND ESSENCE by NATHAN R. WAGNER Under the Direction of Lynée Lewis Gaillet, PhD and Michael Harker, PhD ABSTRACT My dissertation examines the connection between rhetoric and being. I critique subject- oriented phenomenological assumptions that have perpetuated for decades within rhetorical theory and offer an alternative metaphysical methodology. I initially focus on Lloyd Bitzer and Richard Vatz’s debate about the rhetorical situation, which shaped accepted theories of subjectivity for decades to come. I offer an alternative model of the subject that is based on Augustine’s metaphysical model of being, and I focus on this notion of rhetorical being as a means of revealing knowledge as potentially, contextually already present through readings of Martin Heidegger and Emmanuel Levinas’s work. Augustine’s paradigm of the human being as perpetually free yet dependent on contextual surroundings for meaning, whether empirical or ephemeral, affords this study a framework through which to examine the subject within the rhetorical situation.
