Kaila & K. Nupponen Abstract The taxonomy of Palearctic Elachista species similar to E. deceptricula Staudinger, 1880 is revised. Five species are treated: E. spumella Caradja, 1920, E. deceptricula Staudinger, Elachista athroa Kaila, sp. n. from Turkey, E. conferta Kaila sp. n. from Spain, and E. sagara Kaila sp. n. from Kyrgyzstan. Lectotype is designated for E. spumella Caradja. These species are assigned to the Elachista dispilella complex sensu Kaila in Elachista subgenera Aphelosetia . The E. dispilella complex now comprises 24 species. KEY WORDS: Lepidoptera, Elachistinae, Aphelosetia , Elachista dispilella group, Elachista dispilella complex, new species, taxonomy. Introduction The Elachista dispilella s. l. group comprises species of Elachista (Aphelosetia ) (Elachistidae) generally characterized by white or pale yellowish - greyish forewing, either unicolorous or having two dark spots or an irregular scattering of dark grey or brown scales on forewing as the sole pattern (TRAUGOTT-OLSEN, 1988, 1990, 1992). In the genitalia, members of the E. dispilella group are characterized by a narrow valva with an elongate cucullus, the phallus without a caecum, and the basal opening posteriorly oriented in the male genitalia. The papillae anales of the females have ventrally a basal swelling (see KAILA, 1999, 2012 and KAILA & SUGISIMA, 2011 and KAILA et al . (2015) for definition and characterization). TRAUGOTT-OLSEN (1988, 1990, 1992) defined three species complexes within the E. dispilella group, and a number of taxa were left pending further grouping. The system of Traugott-Olsen was later proven not straightworward (KAILA et al ., 2015, KAILA, 2015), and two of these complexes, i.e. E. triseriatella and E. dispunctella complexes were merged by KAILA (2015). Nor is it possible to delineate unequivocally the E. dispilella complexes (KAILA et al. , 2015). 415 L. KAILA & K. NUPPONEN Nevertheless, these groupings serve well an orientation in this species-rich group of superficially similar species. In this paper species that can be associated with Elachista deceptricula Staudinger, 1880 are treated. This conglomerate appears not to be ‘natural’ as a separate group, as all these species could also be placed in the E. dispilella complex as defined by TRAUGOTT-OLSEN (1990) even though he did not do so. That convention was also followed by KAILA et al. (2015). The species here associated with each other are characterized by a straight, needle-shaped cornutus, often basally with another short one. They also have a large, round or wide gnathos unusual to the E. dispilella complex (but see E. cornuta Parenti, 1981 and E. sitibunda Kaila, 2015). In the absence of any real separating traits the five species treated in the present paper are merged to the E. dispilella complex which now comprises the following 24 species: E. athroa Kaila, sp. n. E. bazaensis Traugott-Olsen, 1990 E. bigorrensis Traugott-Olsen, 1990 E. bruuni Traugott-Olsen, 1990 E. conferta Kaila, sp. n. E. cornuta Parenti, 1981 E. curonensis Traugott-Olsen, 1990 E. deceptricula Staudinger, 1880 E. dispilella Zeller, 1839 E. distigmatella Frey, 1859 E. festucicolella Zeller, 1853 E. filicornella Kaila, 1992 E. flavescens Parenti, 1981 E. implana Kaila, 2015 E. laterotis Kaila, 2015 E. levasi Sruoga, 1998 E. nitidulella (Herrich-Schäffer, 1855) E. ripai Kaila, 2015 E. sagara Kaila, sp. n. E. sitibunda Kaila, 2015 E. spumella Caradja, 1920 E. teruelensis Traugott-Olsen, 1990 E. turkensis Traugott-Olsen, 1990 E. vartianae Parenti, 1981 Material and methods Specimens were examined from the following collections: Bucharest Natural History Museum, Romania (L. LIETUVOS ENTOMOLOGŲ DRAUGIJOS DARBAI. 3 (31) tomas 73 NEW DATA ON NEW AND INSUFFICIENTLY KNOWN FOR LITHUANIAN FAUNA SPECIES OF ELACHISTINAE (LEPIDOPTERA: ELACHISTIDAE) VIRGINIJUS SRUOGA1, POVILAS IVINSKIS2, JOLANTA RIMŠAITĖ3 1Vytautas Magnus University, Education Academy. Donelaičio 58, LT-442448 Kaunas, Lithuania; 2, 3Institute of Ecology of Nature Research Centre, Akademijos 2, LT-08412 Vilnius, Lithuania. E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] Introduction The subfamily Elachistinae (family Elachistidae) belongs to the megadiverse lepidopteran superfamily Gelechioidea and contains presently 805 described species considered valid (Kaila, 2019). The larvae are obligate leaf miners, most species feed on monocotyledonous grasses and only some on dicotyledonous plants (Parenti & Varalda, 1994; Sruoga & Ivinskis, 2005). The moths are small, often cryptic, with a wingspan usually between 4 and 20 mm. Adults are poorly attracted to light and usually escape the general moth surveys and are poorly represented in museum and private collections. Therefore, the knowledge on species distribution is still insufficient. Since the monograph on Elachistidae of Lithuania (Sruoga & Ivinskis, 2005), only few papers dealing with the distribution of elachistid species in Lithuania have been published (Paulavičiūtė, 2006, 2008a, 2008b; Paulavičiūtė et al., 2017; Paulavičiūtė & Inokaitis, 2018; Ostrauskas et al., 2010a, 2010b; Sruoga & Ivinskis, 2011, 2017). The purpose of this paper is to provide new distribution data on two new and another eleven Elachistinae species reported from 11 administrative districts in Lithuania. Material and Methods Adult moths were collected by attracting them to mercury-vapour light and swept from low vegetation in the evening before sunset. The specimens were collected by Povilas Ivinskis (P.

  • South-Central England Regional Action Plan
Butterfly Conservation South-Central England Regional Action Plan This action plan was produced in response to the Action for Butterflies project funded by WWF, EN, SNH and CCW by Dr Andy Barker, Mike Fuller & Bill Shreeves August 2000 Registered Office of Butterfly Conservation: Manor Yard, East Lulworth, Wareham, Dorset, BH20 5QP. Registered in England No. 2206468 Registered Charity No. 254937. Executive Summary This document sets out the 'Action Plan' for butterflies, moths and their habitats in South- Central England (Dorset, Hampshire, Isle of Wight & Wiltshire), for the period 2000- 2010. It has been produced by the three Branches of Butterfly Conservation within the region, in consultation with various other governmental and non-governmental organisations. Some of the aims and objectives will undoubtedly be achieved during this period, but some of the more fundamental challenges may well take much longer, and will probably continue for several decades. The main conservation priorities identified for the region are as follows: a) Species Protection ! To arrest the decline of all butterfly and moth species in South-Central region, with special emphasis on the 15 high priority and 6 medium priority butterfly species and the 37 high priority and 96 medium priority macro-moths. ! To seek opportunities to extend breeding areas, and connectivity of breeding areas, of high and medium priority butterflies and moths. b) Surveys, Monitoring & Research ! To undertake ecological research on those species for which existing knowledge is inadequate. Aim to publish findings of research. ! To continue the high level of butterfly transect monitoring, and to develop a programme of survey work and monitoring for the high and medium priority moths.

Part 14. Elachistidae. (Insecta, Lepidoptera) by V asily V. Anikin, Sergey A. Sachkov , V adim V. Zolotuhin & Sergey Y u . Sinev received 5. November 2007 Summary: 65species of Elachistidae are listed from the Volgo-Ural Region. 64 species are recorded from the region in addition to Eversmann ’s list. Introduction: This paper is the 14lh in a series of publications', dealing with the composition of the present-day fauna of the family Elachistidae in the Middle Volga and the south western Cisurals. This region comprises of the administrative divisions of Astrakhan-, Volgograd-, Saratov-, Samara-, Uljanovsk-, Orenburg-, Uralsk- and Atyraus-(=Gurjev) Districts, together with Tataria and Bashkiria. As was accepted in previous parts of this series, only material reliably labeled and spanning mostly the last 25-50 years was used for this study. The main collections are those of the authors: V. Anikin (Saratov and Astrakhan Distr. and Kalmyk. Republic), S. Sachkov (Samara Distr.) and V. Zolotuhin (Uljanovsk and Astrakhan Distr.). Whilst completing this list we also took advantage of the information from recent papers on this region (Sachkov , 1996; Sachkov et al., 1996; Zolotuhin , 2001; K aila et al., 2003). The material in the collections of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg) has also been examined for our study. • One Species in Eight: DNA Barcodes from Type Specimens Resolve a Taxonomic Quagmire
Molecular Ecology Resources (2015) 15, 967–984 doi: 10.1111/1755-0998.12361 One species in eight: DNA barcodes from type specimens resolve a taxonomic quagmire MARKO MUTANEN,* MARI KEKKONEN,†‡ SEAN W. Sequence information from them is increasingly valuable due to the growing usage of DNA barcodes in taxonomy. As type specimens are often old, it may only be possible to recover fragmentary sequence information from them. We tested the efficacy of short sequences from type specimens in the resolution of a challenging taxonomic puzzle: the Elachista dispunctella complex which includes 64 described species with minuscule morphological differences. We applied a multistep pro- cedure to resolve the taxonomy of this species complex. First, we sequenced a large number of newly collected speci- mens and as many holotypes as possible. Second, we used all >400 bp examine species boundaries. We employed three unsupervised methods (BIN, ABGD, GMYC) with specified criteria on how to handle discordant results and examined diagnostic bases from each delineated putative species (operational taxonomic units, OTUs). Third, we evaluated the morphological characters of each OTU. Finally, we associated short barcodes from types with the delin- eated OTUs. In this step, we employed various supervised methods, including distance-based, tree-based and charac- ter-based.

After post Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of graduate work, my life unexpectedly changed, I got Sciences. I started as young scientist on the married and went to the Far East of Russia instead of Gornotaezhnaya station and after three years continued returning to Ukraine. Now, looking back, I can say that work in the Institute of Biology and Soil Science. My it was undoubtedly a stroke of good fortune, because main investigations have been the moths of the family the fauna of this region allowed many discoveries and Gelechiidae.

Bidzilya, Yu. Budashkin & A. Zhakov Abstract An annotated list of 71 species of Elachistidae of Ukraine is given. One species Elachista laurii Bidzilya & Budashkin, sp. n. is described as new from the Eastern Ukraine (Luhansk region) and Volga area of Russia (Ulyanovsk, Saratov and Volgograd regions). Elachista purella Sruoga, 2000 is recorded from Europe for the first time and the hitherto unknown female of this species is illustrated. Eight species: Elachista grandella Traugott-Olsen, 1992, Elachista parvula Parenti, 1978, Elachista nitidulella (Herrich-Schäffer, 1855), Elachista spumella Caradja, 1920, Elachista heringi (Rebel, 1899), Elachista nolckeni Sˇulcs, 1992, Elachista littoricola Le Marchand, 1938 = Elachista volgella Lastukhin, 2009, syn. n., and Biselachista contaminatella (Zeller, 1847) = Biselachista arzamastsevi Lastukhin, 2009, syn. n., are recorded from the Ukraine for the first time.
