AGAINST IDENTITY EVROPA AGAINST THE ALT RIGHT Big Nazi On Campus May 15, 2016 ON FRIDAY, May 6th, white nationalist Richard Spencer, President and director of National Policy Institute (NPI), (a think tank aimed at mil- lennials and educated adults that puts on conferences), and head of its publishing arm Washington Summit Publishers, arrived just before 3pm at UC Berkeley. Encircled by three other white nationalists, Spen- cer walked from the street through several corridors and hallways until finally making his way to Sproul Plaza where a group of other supporters had already gathered and started to live-stream and hold signs. In doing so, Spencer was stepping out of the world of paid con- ferences and weekly podcasts and into the terrain of street activism. Having announced the event on his twitter 48 hours before hand and working with Red Ice Radio, a live-streaming and in home studio run by a white nationalist married couple, the National Policy Institute along with Identity Europa, the youth wing of the American Freedom Party, (a key organizer for ANP is David Duke’s former right-hand man, Jamie Kelso), a Neo-Nazi formation, was working to create a “virtual rally.” The event itself was billed as a “Safe Space” to talk about race in America, using language common among left-wing, ac- tivist, and anarchist spaces. Before the rally even began, Spencer’s fellow white nationalists at Red Ice were already playing up what they imagined was going to happen that day. “Here is is, the birth of the free speech movement, and all of these liberals aren’t going to be able to stand white people talking about race,” they stated, (as if somehow Further resources Berkeley was devoid of white people doing just that). -

At this point, with almost no mathematical training and never having done any bio graphical writing, I became determined to write the life of David Hilbert, whom many considered the profoundest mathematician of the early part of the 20th century. Now, thirty years later, rereading Hilbert, certain questions come to my mind. -

The Dark Enlightenment Nick Land Part 1: Neo-reactionaries head for the exit March 2, 2012 Enlightenment is not only a state, but an event, and a process. As the designation for an historical episode, concentrated in northern Europe during the 18th century, it is a leading candidate for the ‘true name’ of modernity, capturing its origin and essence (‘Renaissance’ and ‘Industrial Revolution’ are others). Between ‘enlightenment’ and ‘progressive enlightenment’ there is only an elusive difference, because illumination takes time – and feeds on itself, because enlightenment is self-confirming, its revelations ‘self-evident’, and because a retrograde, or reactionary, ‘dark enlightenment’ amounts almost to intrinsic contradiction. To become enlightened, in this historical sense, is to recognize, and then to pursue, a guiding light. There were ages of darkness, and then enlightenment came. Clearly, advance has demonstrated itself, offering not only improvement, but also a model. Furthermore, unlike a renaissance, there is no need for an enlightenment to recall what was lost, or to emphasize the attractions of return. The elementary acknowledgement of enlightenment is already Whig history in miniature. Once certain enlightened truths have been found self-evident, there can be no turning back, and conservatism is pre-emptively condemned – predestined — to paradox. F. A. Hayek, who refused to describe himself as a conservative, famously settled instead upon the term ‘Old Whig’, which – like ‘classical liberal’ (or the still more melancholy ‘remnant’) – accepts that progress isn’t what it used to be. What could an Old Whig be, if not a reactionary progressive? And what on earth is that? Of course, plenty of people already think they know what reactionary modernism looks like, and amidst the current collapse back into the 1930s their concerns are only likely to grow. -

The development of Number Theory in the 19th century spawned an arithmetic theory of polynomials over finite fields in which an analogue of the Riemann Hypothesis suggested itself. We describe the history of this topic essentially between 1920 and 1940. This includes the proof of the ana- logue of the Riemann Hyothesis for elliptic curves over a finite field, and various ideas about how to generalize this to curves of higher genus. The 1930ies were also a period of conflicting views about the right method to approach this problem. The later history, from the proof by Weil of the Riemann Hypothesis in charac- teristic p for all algebraic curves over a finite field, to the Weil conjectures, proofs by Grothendieck, Deligne and many others, as well as developments up to now are described in the second part of this diptych: [44]. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 14G15, 11M99, 14H52. Ilka Agricola Philipps-Universit¨at Marburg Madrid, April 2019 — a tribute to the 100th anniversary of Noether’s habilitation — 1 What this talk is about. • History of science, because science is done by scientists, so their working and living conditions influence scientific progress • To be seen in historical context: Industrialisation and wars lead to deep changes in society, the formation of a working class, the need for engineers and other professionals, and sometimes a shortage of male employees • Partially based on a case study carried out in Marburg (2017/18) about the first generation of female math students in Marburg (see refs.) • Applies mainly to Germany and, to some extent, neighbouring countries; very different from situation in South Europe and elsewhere 1 Marburg: An old traditional university • Founded in 1527 by Philip I, Landgrave of Hesse • oldest protestant university in the world • Of relevance for us: As a consequence of the Austro-Prussian War (1866), Marburg and G¨ottingen became part of Prussia (the Electorate of Hesse and and the Kingdom of Hannover disappeared) • Hence, Marburg is typical for the development of universities in Germany’s largest state – to be honest, they developed much better after 1866. 1 Das ‘Mathematische Seminar’ • Mathematics was taught in Marburg since the foundation of the university 1527 (Papin, Wolff. ) • 1817: Foundation of the ‘Mathematisch- physikalisches Institut’ by Christian Gerling (student of C.F. Roquette Received December 15, 1974 DEDICATED TO HELMUT HASSE INTRODUCTION In a rather programmatic paper of 1880 Kronecker gave the impetus to a long and fruitful development in algebraic number theory, although no explicit program is formulated in his paper [17]. As mentioned in Hasse’s Zahlbericht [8], he was the first who tried to characterize finite algebraic number fields by the decomposition behavior of the prime divisors of the ground field. Besides a fundamental density relation, Kronecker’s main result states that two finite extensions (of prime degree) have the same Galois hull if every prime divisor of the ground field possesses in both extensions the same number of prime divisors of first relative degree (see, for instance, [8, Part II, Sects. 24, 251). In 1916, Bauer [3] showed in particular that, among Galois extensions, a Galois extension K 1 k is already characterized by the set of all prime divisors of k which decompose completely in K. More generally, following Kronecker, Bauer, and Hasse, for an arbitrary finite extension K I k we consider the set D(K 1 k) of all prime divisors of k having a prime divisor of first relative degree in K; we call this set the Kronecker set of K 1 k. Obviously, in the case of a Galois extension, the Kronecker set coincides with the set just mentioned. In a counterexample Gassmann [4] showed in 1926 that finite extensions. -

Some basic biographical facts about Emmy Noether (1882-1935), in particular on the discrimination against her as a woman LMS-IMA Joint Meeting: Noether Celebration De Morgan House, Tuesday, 11 September, 2018 Reinhard Siegmund-Schultze (University of Agder, Kristiansand, Norway) ABSTRACT Although it has been repeatedly underlined that Emmy Noether had to face threefold discrimination in political, racist and sexist respects the last- mentioned discrimination of the three is probably best documented. The talk provides some basic biographical facts about Emmy Noether with an emphasis on the discrimination against her as a woman, culminating for the first time in the struggles about her teaching permit (habilitation) 1915-1919 (main source C. Tollmien). Another focus of the talk will be on the later period of her life, in particular the failed appointment in Kiel (1928), her Born: 23 March 1882 in Erlangen, dismissal as a Jew in 1933 and her last years in the Bavaria, Germany U.S. Died: 14 April 1935 in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, USA Older sources Obituaries by colleagues and students: van der Waerden, Hermann Weyl, P.S.
