The Inventory of the Christopher Lehmann-Haupt Collection #1483 The Inventory of the Christopher Lehmann-Haupt Collection #1483 Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center LEHMANN-HAUPT, CHRISTOPHER 1934- #1226 The Christopher Lehmann-Haupt collection consists of 30 paige boxes, the bulk of which is manuscripts and correspondence. The manuscripts are mainly holograph and typescript book reviews written for the New York Times, 1969-1997. In addition there are manuscripts of his two novels, ME AND DIMAGGIO and THE CROOKED MAN as well as manuscripts of articles he has written for the Times and other publications. Correspondence is mainly from literary figures, including many publishers and authors. In addition, there is a sizable amount of printed matter by and about Christopher Lehmann-Haupt along with several files of personal and financial papers. Outline of Inventory I. Manuscripts A.     THE CANADIAN WRITER & THE IOWA EXPERIENCE Anthony Bukoski Τ PURPOSE OF THIS PAPER IS TWO-FOLD: to try to piece together from interviewlHsE and correspondence I have had with a number of Canadian authors — twenty-seven to be exact — a sort of general history, a chronological overview of their involvement in the Iowa Writers' Workshop, and to try to assess the significance of that involvement not only to the writers them- selves but to Canadian literature in general. I intend hedging a bit by including some writers who became Canadians only after leaving Iowa.1 Could so many writers have studied at the same institution in the United States without its having left some mark? What attitudes about teaching creative writing or the commitment to the writer's life and craft did they form? Given the method of Workshop investigation, the fragile egos of most young writers, and the fact that the Workshop is in another country, not all of them profited from the experi- ence of studying at Iowa. Speaking of her experiences there in the late 1950's, for instance, Carol Johnson, who teaches at the University of Victoria, noted, "Writ- ers on the whole seem notorious for their unhappiness. Legends of particularly unhappy types prevailed [though not necessarily Canadians]. Since writers are apparently predisposed to neurosis, it would be safe to assume that most of them would be unhappy anywhere."2 Those who were satisfied found the programme valuable, the atmosphere con- ducive to work — though perhaps neither so attractive nor congenial as the main character finds Iowa in W.

But most of what’s now played in concert halls and honored at the Kennedy Center has its roots in antisocial impulses—in a carpe diem hedonism that is a way of life for violent men with money to burn who know damn well they’re destined for prison or the morgue. Most music books assume or briefly acknowledge these inconvenient facts when they don’t ignore them altogether. But they’re central to two recent histories and two recent memoirs, all highly recommended. Memphis-based Preston Lauterbach’s The Chitlin’ Circuit and the Roots of Rock ’n’ Roll For anyone who cares about the history of pop—and also, in a better world, anyone relishes the criminal origins of a mostly southern black club scene from the early ’30s to who cares about the history of the avant-garde—Between Montmartre and the Mudd the late ’60s.     TONI MORRISON DISCUSSION GUIDE (630) 232-0780 [email protected] AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY The second of the four children of George and Ramah (Willis) Wofford, Toni Morrison was born Chloe Anthony Wofford in Lorain, Ohio, a steel town twenty-five miles west of Cleveland. During the worst years of the Great Depression, her father worked as a car washer, a welder in a local steel mill, and road-construction worker, while her mother, a feisty, determined woman, dealt with callous landlords and impertinent social workers. "When an eviction notice was put on our house, she tore it off," Morrison remembered, as quoted in People. "If there were maggots in our flour, she wrote a letter to [President] Franklin Roosevelt. My mother believed something should be done about inhuman situations." In an article for the New York Times Magazine, Morrison discussed her parents' contrasting attitudes toward white society and the effect of those conflicting views on her own perception of the quality of black life in America. Ramah Wofford believed that, in time, race relations would improve; George Wofford distrusted "every word and every gesture of every white man on Earth." Both parents were convinced, however, that "all succor and aid came from themselves and their neighborhood." Consequently, Morrison, although she attended a multiracial school, was raised in "a basically racist household" and grew up "with more than a child's contempt for white people." After graduating with honors from high school in 1949, Toni Morrison enrolled at Howard University in Washington, DC. Gavrila All Rights Reserved i ABSTRACT Dr. Jane Barnette , Advisor This study offers an exploration of Larry Kramer’s outsider persona, and how that persona affected both his writings as well as public perception of the author. My argument utilizes specific texts that provide insight into various facets of Kramer’s persona, both public and private. A critical analysis of Faggots, several activist texts from the Reagan administration, and The Normal Heart provide the case studies from which I analyze Kramer’s persona(s). This thesis analyzes these works and is informed by deconstructive terms, particularly those of Paul de Man and Jacques Derrida. In addition, Philip Auslander’s notion of persona provides the definition of a term that is continually explored in each of the three chapters. The outcome of this text is not whether Kramer has an outsider persona, but how that persona developed and became a permanent feature of his writings and public appearance. Kramer’s persona changed drastically in just a few years, usually in response to cultural events affecting him directly or though his community. In the conclusion of this study, I do not merely restate my argument but show, through recent writings, how Kramer’s persona and the public’s response to his words still are relevant today.
