Navigating Atheist Identities: an Analysis of Nonreligious Perceptions and Experiences in the Religiously Diverse Canadian City of Ottawa NAVIGATING ATHEIST IDENTITIES: AN ANALYSIS OF NONRELIGIOUS PERCEPTIONS AND EXPERIENCES IN THE RELIGIOUSLY DIVERSE CANADIAN CITY OF OTTAWA Steven Tomlins Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctorate in Philosophy degree in Religious Studies Department of Classics & Religious Studies Faculty of Arts University of Ottawa © Steven Tomlins, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 ii Abstract There is very little research that is empirically-based about atheism in Canada; this thesis seeks to contribute foundational knowledge in this area. It begins with a historical and contemporary overview of atheism in Canada by examining its appearance in government, law, and media. It then addresses the question: “How do atheists construct their identities in the context of a religiously diverse Canada?” through an analysis of data collected from participant-observation with an atheist university club, the Atheist Community of the University of Ottawa (ACUO), followed by an analysis of five significant themes which arose from forty life history interviews (twenty with ACUO members; twenty with Ottawa-area atheists who did not belong to an atheist community that met in person). These themes are: loss of religious identity and/or development of atheist identity; group belonging; perceptions of media and public understanding of atheism; the use of the United States for narrative or comparative purposes; and the frequency of receiving a negative reaction simply for being an atheist. This study found that most interviewees perceived the Canadian public and the media as not understanding atheism because the subject is not commonly reported on or discussed, and many said that (ir)religiosity rarely came up in conversations with strangers, acquaintances, or co-workers. These notions were often seen as resulting from a Canadian social etiquette which dictates that controversial subjects should be avoided in order to minimize the risk of causing offense. Moreover, members of the ACUO often said that they joined an atheist community because they wanted a safe space to meet like-minded people with whom they could freely discuss religion without causing offense to religious others. Unlike in findings from the United States, interviewees did not speak of their atheist identities as being considered ‘un-Canadian’ or as excluding them from their conception(s) of Canadian society. While interviewees often said they were selective with whom they decided to express their atheism, most felt quite positive about living as an atheist in Canada, especially compared to the plight of atheists living in other countries, and atheism came across as being ‘just’ another ‘idea’ in a mosaic of cultural ideas. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank the staff and faculty of the Department of Classics and Religious Studies at the University of Ottawa who have been exceptionally supportive throughout my years of study. The current legal protection of atheists is largely defined by the use of the Establishment Clause to strike down laws that reinforce this stigma or that attempt to deprive atheists of their rights. However, the growing atheist population, a religious pushback against secularism, and a neo- Federalist approach to the religion clauses in the Supreme Court could lead to the rights of atheists being restricted. This Comment suggests that the United States could look to the legal protections of atheists in Europe. Michael Parrish, Ph.D. The trouble with “definitions” is they leave no room for evolution. When a word is concretely defined, it is done so in a particular time and place. Contextual interpretations permit a better understanding of certain heavy words; Atheism as a prime example. In the post-modern world Atheism has become more accepted and popular, especially as a reaction to global terrorism. However, the current definition of Atheism is terribly inaccurate. It cannot be stated properly that pagan Atheism is the same as New Atheism. By interpreting the Atheisms from four stages in the term‟s history a clearer picture of its meaning will come out, hopefully alleviating the stereotypical biases weighed upon it. In the interpretation of the Atheisms from Pagan Antiquity, the Enlightenment, the New Atheist Movement, and the American Judicial and Civil Religious system, a defense of the theory of elastic contextual interpretations, rather than concrete definitions, shall be made.     MODEL SECULAR POLICY GUIDE SECULAR VALUES Freedom Beliefs Protected, Not Imposed A society that truly respects the freedom of the individual must strike a balance between protecting freedom of thought and belief, and protecting citizens from being forced to conform to the beliefs of others. Inclusion All Faiths and None In the American melting pot, people come from all walks of life, yet can feel connected to each other through shared pride of our national heritage. Every American, no matter who they are and what they believe, should feel included in our national symbols and traditions. Equality Unbiased Governance Protecting the rights of all its citizens equally, while also holding everyone equally responsible for abiding by laws that serve to benefit our society, is a fundamental tenet of America’s constitutional democracy. Our laws must be unbiased and religiously neutral. When the government favors one group and their belief system over another, it relegates all others to a second-class status. Knowledge Information Empowers We are constantly in awe of the scientific and technological accomplishments human beings have made, particularly how these advances have improved and saved so many lives. Continued progress depends on society valuing science and fostering free inquiry. When the government skews scientific findings for ideological reasons or suppresses accurate information, it restricts freedom of thought and halts scientific progress.
