Genesis God, at the beginning of time, created heaven and earth. Earth was still an empty waste, but already over its waters, stirred the breath of God. Then God said, Let there be light; and the light began. God saw the light, and found it good, and he divided the spheres of light and darkness; the light he called Day and the darkness Night … And God said, Let us make man, wearing our image and likeness; let us put him in command of the fishes in the sea, and all that flies through the air, and the cattle, and the whole earth, and all the creeping things that move on earth. So God made man in his own image, made him in the image of God.— The Book of Genesis1 In a single blinding pulse a moment of glory much too swift and expansive for any form of words, the singularity (a point or region in space time in which gravitational forces cause matter to have an infinite density) assumes heavenly dimensions, space beyond conception. The first lively second (a second that many cosmologists will devote careers to shaving into even finer wafers) produces gravity and the other forces that govern physics. In less than a minute the universe is a million billion miles across and growing fast … In three minutes, 98% of all matter there is or will ever be produced. We have a universe. It is a place of the most wondrous and gratifying possibility, and beautiful too. And it is done in about the time it takes to make a sandwich. — Bill Bryson2 In both the Biblical and the modern scientific account3 it was seemingly from nothing that the universe we inhabit was created. In one version it took six days, in the other the time it takes ‘to make a sandwich’. One version is beautiful in its simplicity and majesty of its prose. The other has a fearful beauty in its almost impersonal force but is prosaic in its telling. One version has been a generator of countless pieces of literature, art and theology, many of which are sublime artefacts of Western civilisation. The other has no such artistic pedigree but has influenced not only how we view the universe but also our view of how we evolved as a species. In one, the world is created by the breath of God; the other is hard to visualise in tranquillity and probably too 6 Christianity, Islam & Atheism complex to fully apprehend. No tolerance of disparate world views can give both versions a commonality of purpose. For one is a story devised in the Bronze Age (approx. 3600-1200 BCE), the latter is a modern and scientific explanation. In the Bronze Age facts were not collected, analysed, sanctified and collated like the contents of a filing cabinet. It was a world where creation myths were given a metaphysical aura of being the paramount explainer of the world; in ours it is science. The Bronze Age was a world of great complexity and sophistication but also one inhabited by gods, demons and unexplainable natural events. Ours is a more materialistic, sceptical and literal age. Some religious believers, who were not disturbed by the advance of science, and who did not wish to lose their contact with the numinous and the unutterable, turned the Bible into metaphor. Genesis became an account of what happens when our human ego gets the better of us and we lose sight of our fallibility. Most of the current crop of atheist writers seem to disregard interpretation; in their binary world the story is simply untrue, and no attention is paid to its moral and cultural aspects. Radical social commentators acknowledge the moral in the tale and point out that the story has an enduringly dark aspect: the loss of Eden and our innocence, the latter being a lack of awareness of sexuality. Being banished from paradise we inherited the carnality of sex and its capriciousness — our desire for it and fear of it. In the eyes of the Church sex was something to be avoided and if that was not possible, confined to procreation in the marital bed. Intertwining this fear of sex was misogyny. This was because the devil in the guise of the serpent tempts Adam’s partner Eve (born from the rib of Adam) first and then Eve tempts Adam; as a result we are exiled from paradise. The question then is not whether the tale is true (it is not) but what use is made of the tale. It is not simply a tale of man’s hubris but the beginning of misogyny in Western discourse, the constricted role of women and the fear of human sexuality that was and still is one of the meta-narratives not only in Christendom but also amongst other religious groups in our secular world. Being of the left, I consider that religious belief is a personal matter best explored in one’s home,

    Philosophy Of Religion / Atheism AO2 Atheism AO2 Handout Part 1 New Atheism successfully shows the incompatibility of science and religion. Evaluate this view. 1. New Atheists seem to argue that scientific theories are based only on evidence, whilst religion runs away from evidence. The claim is that atheism is rational and scientific while religion is irrational and superstitious. Faith is not an element of science since evidence for a correct conviction compels us to accept its truth. As Dawkins says “Faith is a state of mind that leads people to believe something – it doesn’t matter what – in the total absence of supporting evidence. If there were good supporting evidence, then faith would be superfluous…” However, Alister McGrath points out that such a view “fails to make the critical distinction between the ‘total absence of supporting evidence’ and the ‘absence of totally supporting evidence’.” It is true that some facts about the world have been proved (e.g. the chemical formula for water) but the bigger scientific questions such as is there a Grand Unified Theory that explains everything rely on answers based on the best evidence available but they are not certainties. In future years they may well change as new evidence is considered. As Gauch concluded “Science rests on faith”. Dawkins in his book “The God Delusion” does argue that the existence of God is a testable hypothesis and concludes that the hypothesis is falsifiable. Therefore the hypothesis is open to the scientific method. So here is a New Atheist proponent arguing that that the existence of God is a meaningful hypothesis.

Michael Parrish, Ph.D. The trouble with “definitions” is they leave no room for evolution. When a word is concretely defined, it is done so in a particular time and place. Contextual interpretations permit a better understanding of certain heavy words; Atheism as a prime example. In the post-modern world Atheism has become more accepted and popular, especially as a reaction to global terrorism. However, the current definition of Atheism is terribly inaccurate. It cannot be stated properly that pagan Atheism is the same as New Atheism. By interpreting the Atheisms from four stages in the term‟s history a clearer picture of its meaning will come out, hopefully alleviating the stereotypical biases weighed upon it. In the interpretation of the Atheisms from Pagan Antiquity, the Enlightenment, the New Atheist Movement, and the American Judicial and Civil Religious system, a defense of the theory of elastic contextual interpretations, rather than concrete definitions, shall be made. According to the CIA World Factbook, one-third of the world practices some sort of denomination of Christianity.1 The problem with this listing from the Factbook is that it does not take into account the schisms of faith that have fractured the faith from the Enlightenment, the Reformation, and every point leading to the formation of Christianity itself. In addition, the proliferation of Atheism is an important concept to view when discussing religion. Originally starting as a product of searching for truth, we see Atheism evolve into something that stands vehemently against any form of religion in modern society. When looking chronologically at the Christian faith, we see ourselves with a drastically different example of theology upon examination of ancient origins to the modern “everyone is saved” mentality of the current church. This paper aims to examine the transformation of the Christian religion, as well as examining the conflict between modern atheism and modern Christianity. Before jumping into the examination of sources, some terminology needs to be explained. Of prime importance is the concept of transcendence. To be transcendent is to be beyond any possible understanding in the eyes of man. No matter how hard one tries to focus on a transcendent ideal, they will not come to understand it, simply because of it being something so far beyond the possible understanding of man. In the concept of ancient religion, God was a transcendent being, one that man could never fully understand, or process how he worked.

RALPH WALDO EMERSON THE GOD HYPOTHESIS 31 The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, fili- cidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully. Those of us schooled from infancy in his ways can become desensitized to their horror. A naif blessed with the perspective of innocence has a clearer perception. Winston Churchill's son Randolph somehow contrived to remain ignorant of scripture until Evelyn Waugh and a brother officer, in a vain attempt to keep Churchill quiet when they were posted together during the war, bet him he couldn't read the entire Bible in a fort- night: 'Unhappily it has not had the result we hoped. He has never read any of it before and is hideously excited; keeps reading quotations aloud "I say I bet you didn't know this came in the Bible ..." or merely slapping his side & chortling "God, isn't God a shit!"'16 Thomas Jefferson - better read - was of a similar opinion: 'The Christian God is a being of terrific character - cruel, vindictive, capricious and unjust.' It is unfair to attack such an easy target. The God Hypothesis should not stand or fall with its most unlovely instantiation, Yahweh, nor his insipidly opposite Christian face, 'Gentle Jesus meek and mild'. (To be fair, this milksop persona owes more to his Victorian followers than to Jesus himself.

    ABSTRACT On Science and Atheism: Whether Atheistic Belief is Scientifically Motivated Charles L. Jester Director: Gerald Cleaver, Ph.D. The intent of this paper is to explore the motivation behind the rejection of theistic religious faiths by modern atheist scientists, and whether it is justified to claim that this rejection is scientifically motivated. First, a brief background of the development of the contemporary schism between faith and science is given, noting in particular changes in belief amongst the scientific community. Next, an exposition on the motivations for scientists’ convictions concerning God is laid out, followed by an address to the question of whether atheistic scientists reject all properties of God, or only certain of them. Based on analyses of personal statements, statistical data on beliefs, and developments in twentieth-century physics and mathematics, it is concluded that modern scientists who reject theism are not overwhelmingly motivated by science, and that they in fact do not reject all ideas of God.
