To achieve this purpose, a total of 285 respondents were used for the study. A stratified random sampling technique was used.In this technique; the six (6) geo-political zones in Nigeria were used. Experts in the field of Physical and Health Education vetted the questionnaire in order to determine its face and content validity. The final draft of the questionnaire was administered on the respondents. The data collected were statistically analyzed using Descriptive statistics of frequency, means and standard deviation to determine the average responses of the respondents, The Chi-square statistical technique was used to test the influence of the FIFA organized competitions, one sample t-test was used to determine whether the rated influence is considered statistically significant or not and One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used for differences among the perception of the respondents on the influence of FIFA Organized Competitions on the attainment of Millennium Development Goals in Nigeria. The findings indicate that FIFA organized competitions have no significant influence on the eradication of poverty and hunger in Nigeria, FIFA organized competitions have no significant influence on achieving the objectives of Universal Primary Education of the Millennium Development Goals. It was therefore concluded that the activities of FIFA organized competitions have not helped in the promotion of gender equality and women empowerment in Nigeria.Combating HIV/AIDS in Nigeria within the Millennium Development Goals have no significant impact of the various activities involved in FIFA organized competitions. The Federal Government could exploit FIFA organized competition for promoting peace among ethnic and religious groupings thereby promoting the games in Nigeria. It was recommended that there is a need to develop more infrastructural facilities for FIFA organized competitions in Nigeria as this would pave ways for hosting the games. vii TABLE OF CONTENTS Cover Page i Title Page ii Declaration iii Certification iv Dedication v Acknowledgements vi Abstract vii Table of Contents viii List of Tables xiii List of Figures xiv List of Abbreviations xvi Operational Definition of Terms xvii CHAPTER ONE:INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background to the Study 1 1.2 Statement of the Problem 4 1.3 Purpose of the Study 5 1.4 Research Questions 6 1.5 Basic Assumptions 7 1.6 Hypothesis 8 1.6.1 Sub-hypotheses 8 1.7 Significance of the Study 9 1.8 Delimitation 10 CHAPTER TWO: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE 2.0 Introduction 11 2.1 History and Development of FIFA 11 2.1.1 Post-War Expansion of FIFA 14 2.2 The History of FIFA since Inception 15 2.2.1 FIFAStructure 17 2.2.2 Recognitions and Awards 19 viii 2.2.3 Governance and Game Development 19 2.2.4 Discipline of National Associations 19 2.2.5 FIFA Anthem 20 2.2.6 2011 FIFA Presidential Election 21 2.2.7 Response to Allegations 22 2.3 Vision and Mission of FIFA 23 2.3.1 Vision of FIFA 23 2.3.2 Mission of FIFA 24 2.3.2.1 Developing Football Everywhere and for All 24 2.3.2.2 Organizing Inspiring Tournaments of FIFA 24 2.3.2.3 Caring about Society and the Environment 25 2.4 Strategic Planning and Objectives 25 2.5 Types of FIFA Tournaments 28 2.5.1 Eight FIFA Men‘s Tournaments 28 2.5.2 FIFA Women‘s Tournaments 28 2.5.3 Common FIFA Tournaments (for both genders) 28 2.6 FIFA Organized Competition for Promoting Global Peace 30 2.7 FIFA Organized Competition in Promoting UBE in Nigeria 42 2.8 FIFA Organized Competition forPromoting Sport and Physical Education in Achieving Millennium Development Goals in Nigeria 51 2.9 Theoretical Framework 61 2. 10 History of Millennium Development Goals 62 2.10.1 Monterrey Consensus 62 2.10.2 MDGs at the World Summit 62 2.11 Millennium Development Goals 64 2.12 The United Nations Eight (8) Millennium Development Goals 66 2.12.1 Eradication of Poverty and Hunger 66 2.12.2 Achieve the Universal Primary Education 66 2.12.3 Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women 66 2.12.4 Reduce Child Mortality 66 2.12.5 Improve Material Health 66 ix 2.12.6 Combat HIV and AIDS, Malaria and other Diseases 67 2.12.7 Ensure Environmental Sustainability 67 2.13 Contribution of FIFA to the Millennium Development Goals 67 2.13.1 Eradication of Poverty and Hunger 67 2.13.2 Achieve the Universal Primary Education 67 2.13.3 Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women 68 2.13.4 Reduce Child Mortality 68 2.13.5 Combat HIV and AIDS, Malaria and other Diseases 68 2.13.6 Ensure Environmental Sustainability 69 2.13.7 Develop a Global Partnership for Development 69 2.14 Chapter Summary 72 2.14.2 History and Development of FIFA 72 2.14.3 Types of FIFA Tournament 72 2.14.4 Vision and Mission of FIFA 73 2.14.5 Meaning of Millennium Development Goals 73 2.14.6 FIFA and Millennium Development Goals 73 CHAPTER THREE: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY 3.0 Introduction 75 3.1 Research Design 75 3.2 Population 75 3.3 Sample and Sampling Technique 76 3.4 Instrumentation 77 3.5 Validation of the Instrument 78 3.6 Reliability of the Instrument 78 3.7 Procedure for Data Collection 79 3.8 Procedure for Data Analysis 79 CHAPTER FOUR: RESULTS AND DISCUSSION 4.1 Introduction 80 4.2 Descriptive Analysis of the Socio-demographic Characteristics 80 4.4 Test of Hypotheses 99 4.5 Summary of Findings 107 x 4.6 Discussion 108 CHAPTER FIVE: SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS 5.1 Summary 113 5.1.1 Summary of Major Findings 114 5.2 Conclusions 115 5.3 Implication of the Study and Contribution to Knowledge 115 5.4 Limitations of the Study 115 5.5 Recommendations 116 5.6.

December 2014 19:20 UTC Canada at the Crossroads: Improving International Performance by Establishing a New Canadian Soccer League Duane W. Rockerbie* December 2014 Abstract: Canada’s national soccer team program has met with disappointing results in the qualifying rounds of play in the CONCACAF zone that lead to World Cup qualification. Canada has not appeared in the World Cup tournament since 1986 and more recent performances place Canada well down in the FIFA world rankings. Canada has not benefitted from a national soccer league since 1993 and Canadian players have difficulty finding training opportunities abroad. This paper develops an econometric model to explain a nations FIFA world points to determine the expected improvement in Canada’s FIFA world points, and subsequent FIFA world and CONCACAF rankings, by establishing a hypothetical ten-team Tier II soccer league. The model suggests that only a modest improvement could be expected since most FIFA member nations already feature at least one professional or semi-professional league of some sort. *Department of Economics, University of Lethbridge 4401 University Drive, Lethbridge, Alberta Canada T1K3M4 E-mail: [email protected] Football is undeniably the most popular team sport in the world. Although many countries feature semi- professional and professional leagues with club sides, nothing captures the public interest and generates feelings of nationalistic pride than football played at the national team level.

  • Sports India and World
SPORTS INDIA AND WORLD World Cup Cricket History The idea of organising a World Cup of cricket was mooted and agreed to in principle in 1971 when such a proposal was discussed at a meeting of the International Cricket Conference in London. However, due to various commitments the tournaments could not be staged until 1975 when the original plan of a South African team's visit to England fell through following opposition to the country's racial policy. England's Prudential Assurance Company came forward with sponsorship and for three consecutive years - 1975, 1979 and 1983, the one-day limited overs cricket tournament was held in England. It became famous as the Prudential Cup. In the first two tournaments, apart from the six full members of the International Cricket Conference (England, Australia, West Indies, New Zealand, India and Pakistan), Sri Lanka, before being elevated to Test status in 1981, had joined East Africa in 1975 and Canada in 1979 (two top teams among the associate members) to complete the groups in the tournaments proper. The West Indies, under Clive Lloyd, not only won the first two tournaments in 1975 and 1979 but in true Calypso style they produced sparkling cricket and confirmed their unassailable supremacy in this game. India broke the West Indian stranglehold in 1983 to open a new chapter in the brief annals of this prestigious tournament. • The Story of Football in Trinidad and Tobago 1893 -2000
The Story of Football in Trinidad and Tobago 1893 -2000 Chapter One Kick-off THE Trinidad News and San Fernando Gazette of June 6, 1893, was not at all happy with what was happening in the Trinidad society during the year. The paper reported that there was growing corruption among the youth in the colony which was the direct result of the invasion of Government offices as well as stores and estates by strangers from the United Kingdom. In its editorial entitled ‘Agricultural pursuits,’ the paper noted: “What with the invasion of government offices, of stores and sugar estates by strangers from the mother country, more particularly from Scotland, and what with the growing corruption of our young men by frequentation of places of evil, gambling halls, dignity balls etc, our youth of the better classes are in a fair way of becoming a nuisance to themselves and their country, instead of, as in other countries, forming the main factor of the moral, intellectual and physical wealth of their native land.” The paper continued: “It would be knocking our heads against a stone wall to find fault with Scotsmen who now have the dry goods trade and the management of sugar estates mostly in their hands because they send their poor relatives or friends from Scotland to fill situations of emoluments under them. We believe our creole youth to be brighter than the young strangers who are imported to occupy posts which of right, should be theirs and with the knowledge they have of people, their ways, their language and their wants, they would certainly be more useful.

Review of Paul Darby's Africa, Football, and FIFA : Politics, Colonialism, and Resistance Emad Mirmotahari When reading PauJ Darby's Africa, Football, and FIFA : Poliric~. Colonialism. and Resistance. I could not help reminiscing about a central problematic m htstorical schola~hip that I encountered in my early studies. I took a !)eminar entitled ' Historiography and Revolutionary france', m '' hich \\C examined different theorettcal approaches to 1789 and its impact on subsequent revolution:,. The point of the course was to acquaint students with the scholarly shift from History to hisrories. We first read R.R. Palmer's 1keh·e Who Ruled-a work of Hi tory. which profiles alJ of the key revolutionaries from Marat to Robe!)pterre. The details of the revolution, its principles, its causes, and i~ trajectory were ultimately to be gleaned from these individuals' ideas and actions. Later on we read hi.Hories, works like Roger Chariter's The Cultural Origins ofthe French Revolution and Roben Dam ton's The Great Cat Massacre, works that disperse 1789 throughout a complex web of social, cultural, and ideological transformations in France and Europe. Paul Darby's book, while well researched, metic ulous, and lucidly written, represents the first inclination in scholarship, the classic History, which favours 'events', the official, the top-down, and the institutional at the expense of histories, which privilege 'processes', the popular, the cultural, and the holistic. Though Darby acknowledges that any discussion about the development of African football depends on its rigorous contextualisation, the ' people' in FlFAaround whom much of the book is written, claim the bulk of the narrative.

THE BALL IS FLAT THE BALL IS FLAT: A STUDY OF INSTITUTIONAL RACISM IN FOOTBALL By ERIC POOL, B.A. A Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts McMaster University © Copyright by Eric Pool, September 2010 MASTER OF ARTS (2010) McMaster University (English) Hamilton, Ontario TITLE: The Ball is Flat: A Study ofInstitutional Racism in Football AUTHOR: Eric Pool, B.A. (University of Waterloo) SUPERVISOR: Professor Chandrima Chakraborty NUMBER OF PAGES: v, 127 ii Abstract: This project examines the ways in which the global mobility of players has unsettled the traditional nationalistic structure of football and the anxious responses by specific football institutions as they struggle to protect their respective political and economic hegemonies over the game. My intention is to expose the recent institutional exploitation of football's "cultural power" (Stoddart, Cultural Imperialism 650) and ability to impassion and mobilize the masses in order to maintain traditional concepts of authority and identity. The first chapter of this project will interrogate the exclusionary selection practices of both the Mexican and the English Football Associations. Both institutions promote ethnoracially singular understandings of national identity as a means of escaping disparaging accusations of "artificiality," thereby protecting the purity and prestige of the nation, as well as the profitability of the national brand. The next chapter will then turn its attention to FIFA's proposed 6+5 policy, arguing that the rule is an institutional effort by FIF A to constrain and control the traditional structure of football in order to preserve the profitability of its highly "mediated and commodified spectacle" (Sugden and Tomlinson, Contest 231) as well as assert its authority and autonomy in the global realm.

  • On the Importance of the Probabilistic Model in Identifying the Most Decisive Game in a Tournament
UC3M Working Papers Departamento de Estadística Statistics and Econometrics Universidad Carlos III de Madrid 15-14 Calle Madrid, 126 ISSN 2387-0303 28903 Getafe (Spain) June 2015 Fax (34) 91 624-98-48 ON THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PROBABILISTIC MODEL IN IDENTIFYING THE MOST DECISIVE GAME IN A TOURNAMENT a b a Francisco Corona , Juan de Dios Tena and Mike Wiper Abstract Identifying the decisive matches in international football tournaments is of great relevance for a variety of decision makers such as organizers, team coaches and/or media managers. This paper addresses this issue by analyzing the role of the statistical approach used to estimate the outcome of the game on the identification of decisive matches on international tournaments for national football teams. We extend the measure of decisiveness proposed by Geenens (2014) in order to allow to predict or evaluate the decisive matches before, during and after a particular game on the tournament. Using information from the 2014 FIFA World Cup, our results suggest that Poisson and kernel regressions significantly outperform the forecasts of ordered probit models. Moreover, we find that although the identification of the most decisive matches is independent of the model considered, the identification of other key matches is model dependent. We also apply this methodology to identify the favorite teams and to predict the most decisive matches in 2015 Copa America before the start of the competition. Furthermore, we compare our forecast approach with respect to the original measure during the knockout stage. Keywords: Decisive game, Entropy, Poisson model, Kernel regression, Ordered probit model. a Department of Statistics, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.

In this article, I will discuss the role of sport and how sports organizations responded to the increasing hostilities. What happens to the claimed ‘un-political sport’ when the context in which it takes place becomes ever more politicized? Should sport take a stand or should it stick to the favourite position of Western sporting officials in the 1930s that ‘sport and politics should not mix’? What can be sport’s main contribution in times of conflict and war? Although I shall here have a particular emphasis on the small, occupied nations in Europe, I shall also discuss the attitudes and politics of the IOC and other international sports organizations in the critical years leading up to and into the war: Was it possible to keep the Olympics going? Based on recent research with primary and secondary sources, archive materials from the IOC and other organizations, as well as international research literature, I conclude that sport’s symbolic ambiguity as it related to peace and war was reflected in the different ways in which sportspeople and organizations reacted to WWII.

  • Flow Concacaf Caribbean Club Championship
Welcome to the Congress To our Member Associations’ Presidents, Delegates and Guests, We begin this welcome letter for our 34th Concacaf Ordinary Congress with a great sense of pride about Concacaf. As we look back on last year — in fact, the last three years since our administration took office — it is remarkable how much our organization has accomplished on our journey to move football forward throughout the region. We are ONE family that works within a culture defined by a love for our game, with ONE mutual goal of becoming champions, on and off the field. Guided by our brand pillars of Unity, Football, Quality and Access, we continue to make excellent progress in the execution of our regional strategy. As a result, we are happy to report on another record year for our Confederation. First, from a competition standpoint, we have seen the introduction and expansion of tournaments aimed at raising the quality of Concacaf’s football, while creating more access to all of the game’s stakeholders. • There is tremendous pride in the launch of the Concacaf Nations League. When we see the results and emotions from our federation’s presidents, coaches, players, fans and the media, we can already perceive how our joint efforts are generating benefits of increased competition and development for the Confederation as a whole. • The expansion of the Concacaf Gold Cup, from 12 to 16 nations, is another signature achievement. More importantly, for the first time in the 15 editions of the competition, we are bringing our top national team championship to a Caribbean and Central American pitch.
