At first reluctant to shelter the girl, Osamu’s wife agrees to take care of her after learning of the hardships she faces. Although the family is poor, barely making enough money to survive through petty crime, they seem to live happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals hidden secrets, testing the bonds that unite them… INTERVIEW WITH KORE-EDA HIROKAZU Director You decided to make this film after learning about incidents of families illegally receiving the pensions of parents who had already died years ago. Was your inten- tion to depict a family from a different angle compared to your previous films? The first thing that came to my mind was the tagline: “Only the crimes tied us together”. In Japan, crimes like pension frauds and parents making their children The later scenes showing the family being split up are heartbreaking.

The New York neighborhood I’ve been living in for the past year posted on December 24, 2011 has many such establishments, a small interior layout with abundant nautical Mediterranean accents that might indicate bad taste—if the seafood weren’t so good. The restaurant opens up to the sidewalk, where numerous tables are arranged to take full advantage of all available space, and make room for the steady flow of customers during its busy hours. This wasn’t a busy time of day, a few couples drinking wine and sharing small plates, enjoying the sun after so many days of rain. Past lunchtime, but too early for an early dinner, the time of day the manager would ask someone to come in for a job interview. I was getting takeout. From my line of sight at the bar, the balance of the building on its foundation seemed crooked, the sidewalk appeared to rise at an incline out of balance with the avenue in front of me.

  • Koreeda Hirokazu at Yale University February 25-26, 2011
Koreeda Hirokazu at Yale University February 25-26, 2011 “If anyone can be considered an heir of the great Yasujiro Ozu, it might be Hirokazu Koreeda.” –Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun-Times, 2009) on Still Walking Koreeda Hirokazu was born on June 6, 1962. He originally wanted to become a novelist, and attended Waseda University to study literature. Upon graduation, Koreeda joined the independent production company TV Man Union in 1987, and worked there as an assistant director for three years. In 1991, he made his first two documentaries: Lessons from a Calf (Mō hitotsu no kyōiku: Ina shōgakkō haru-gumi no kiroku) and However... (Shikashi…fukushi kirisute no jidai ni), which earned him a promotion to full director and launched a career filled with both feature films and television documentaries. Koreeda’s first fictional film, Maborosi (Maboroshi no hikari, 1995), won the Golden Oscella Award at the 52nd Venice Film Festival. He would go on to make other feature films such as After Life (Wandafuru raifu, 1998), Distance (2001, nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival), Nobody Knows (Dare mo shiranai, 2004), Hana (Hana yori mo naho, 2006), Still Walking (Aruitemo aruitemo, 2008) and Air Doll (Kūki ningyō, 2009, selected for Un Certain Regard at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival). At the same time, he would continue to make television documentaries that focused on figures such as the author Miyazawa Kenji, filmmakers Hou Hsiao Hsien and Edward Yang, poet Tanikawa Shuntarō, controversial AIDS victim Hirata Yutaka, and most recently comedian Hagimoto Kin’ichi. While Koreeda has sometimes been overlooked by critics in Japan, his work demands our attention.
