Traffic Counts & Transportation Access

With the increase of population, vehicle travel has also increased.

• Forest Grove is only 24 miles to downtown Portland.

• Forest Grove can be accessed by State Highway 8 (Tualatin Valley Highway) or Highway 47 in Forest Grove. US Highway 26 is 6 miles to the north. Direct connections to Highway 26 can be made through Highway 47 bypass in Banks or through Verboort, Cornelius or North Plains. It is approximately 8 miles to Hwy 26, 25 miles to I‐405, 16 miles from Highway 217, and 20 miles to I‐5..

• Highway 47 (Quince Street) and Highway 8 (Pacific Avenue) intersect in Forest Grove. At this location there is an Average Daily Traffic count (ADT) of:

ƒ 36,000 vehicles on TV Highway 8 (Pacific Avenue). ƒ 22,000 on Highway 47 (Quince St.) just north of Pacific Avenue (TV Highway 8).

• The 57‐TV Hwy/Forest Grove Trimet bus route connects Forest Grove, Cornelius, Hillsboro, Aloha and Beaverton, via Pacific, Baseline, TV Highway and Canyon Road. During the weekday morning and afternoon rush hours, buses run about every 15 minutes. Service operates from 4:00 am to 1:00 am weekdays, 5:00 am to 1:00 am Saturdays and Sundays.

• GroveLink transportation was added to the Forest Grove community in 2013. Extending beyond TriMet’s line 57, the GroveLink bus serves a greater part of the city, helping to link residents with downtown locales as well as with bus line 57.

• Light Rail station to Portland and the westside suburbs is only 6 miles from the center of Forest Grove. Connections can be made via frequent public bus service that arrives every 15 minutes during peak times.

Fine Dining

• There are two fine dining restaurant in the area including Forest Grove, Cornelius, Gaston, Banks. North Plains and the surrounding villages. Both are in Forest Grove ‐1910 Main, An American Bistro and Stecchino Bistro. A third, featuring Italian/French/tapas cuisine is scheduled to open in downtown Forest Grove late January 2014. o There are 2 fine dining restaurants within a 1 miles radius o There are 2 fine dining restaurants within a 5 miles radius o There are 2 fine dining restaurants

• The only sit‐down full‐service family restaurant within a 8 mile radius is Prime Time Sports Bar and Restaurant in eastern Forest Grove on Hwy 8. They have recently rebuilt a new facility with a large amount of seating and a large menu offering breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mcmenamins Grand Lodge also has a full menu

including pizza and burgers. Godfathers Pizza is at the Ballard Towne Shopping Center in Forest Grove with a fair amount of seating. In downtown Hillsboro, there is an Elmers that serves a full menu of home‐cooked type meals including breakfast. Approximately 10 miles away on TV Highway 8, there is a Shari’s, Izzy’s Pizza‐ an american food buffet, and a Red Robin. There are no other facilities within a 10 mile radius in any direction.

• There are only three fast‐food operations in Forest Grove: a McDonalds, Taco Bell and a Jack in the Box. Within five miles in Cornelius there is a Sonic and Burger King. There are four pizza chains Domino’s, Papa Murphy’s, and Godfathers Pizza and one local chain, Pizza Schmizza. There is one sub sandwich chain, Subway and two local independents: Phil’s subs and Little Monkey Deli. In Cornelius within 6 miles there is a Little Caesars Pizza.

• The ethnic restaurants represented in Forest Grove are Mexican (3), Chinese (3). Middle Eastern (1) Thai (2) British (1), Japanese (1) .All are local independents. In Cornelius within 5 miles is one Chinese restaurant and multiple Mexican eateries. In downtown Hillsboro approximately 8 miles away there is a high quality Japanese restaurant ‐Syun, one Chinese and two Thai and multiple Mexican. While the food is good and the facilities clean, most have limited seating. They are all independents.

Breakfast

There is a need for a full service sit down breakfast menu. In addition, there is a large population attending church services on Sunday.

• Within Forest Grove, Cornelius, Banks, and Gaston there are limited options. • Two larger facilities, Prime Time and McMenamins restaurants, serve daily breakfast until 2pm. Currently Maridon and 22nd Street Station serve a full breakfast daily but are very small establishments with limited seating. In downtown Forest Grove

1910 –Main serves a breakfast on weekends while Maggies Buns (closed on Sunday) and Connies Corner Café and Ice Cream have a limited breakfast menu.

• There are no breakfast establishments in Cornelius. Heading east within downtown Hillsboro ‐8 miles away there is an Elmers. Heading west of Forest Grove toward Tillamook State Forest there is a full daily breakfast menu at Colemen’s 10 miles away.

• Forest Grove offers the most wineries in the 6‐county Portland metro area. There are 12 wineries in the Forest Area and many more not too far away.

• Forest Grove is building a branding identity affiliated with local wine, while also looking to establish a wine center as the northern gateway to wine country. The City is seeking to get a share of the fast growing wine enthusiast tourism sector. These people are very valuable because they tend to spend more on average than others. They also have cross‐over interests such interest in fine dining, outdoor recreation and history and heritage. Two fine dining restaurants serve wine country tourists and visitors. Grove also has two B&B’s/Inns that are marketing to this industry. They are also looking to establish small winery tours. Washington County wineries have been strengthening the Washington County Vintners Association, to develop wine tourism –much of it would come right through Forest Grove.

• Forest Grove attracts tourists and visitors with an amateur sports athletic complex; outdoor recreation such as Tillamook State Forest, Hagg Lake, bicycling tour routes, Fernhill Wetlands Birding sanctuary; and history and heritage including Pacific University.

• Lastly for a small city, Forest Grove runs several colorful events including the Concours d’ Elegance car show, Main Course/Forest Grove Uncorked Food and Wine on Main Street, Sidewalk Chalk Art Fest, First Wednesday, Christmas Light Parade, University Hawaiian Luau, Pacific University Performing Art Series and Farmers Market

• Pacific University offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in liberal arts and the fast growing healthcare field. Pacific has nearly 3,500 students (1,720 undergraduates and 1,713 graduates). Their strategic plan calls for growth to 4,000 students.

• Pacific employs nearly 500 faculty and staff. The University also attracts non‐students with professional summer conferences, alumni events, college athletic events and a range of arts and culture programs for the public including concerts, art, theatre and more.

• Founded in 1849, the private liberal arts university offers 52 undergraduate degrees in the College of Arts and Sciences including the new dental hygiene program. They also offer professional programs in education and five health professions including optometry, professional psychology, occupational therapy, physician assistant, and pharmacy.

• Major investments in the past two years are a $12 million 42,000 LEED academic building, a 163 bed, 4‐story LEED dormitory and a $11 million Lincoln Park sports complex including 300 and 500 seats stadium, and track and field center, attracting semi‐professional and amateur sporting events.

• Each fall, a new freshman class of 500 students arrive on campus. They make expenditures on a range of items to outfit there dormitory or on‐campus apartment.

• The university attracts additional visitors into the region with a number of college and community events such as parent and alumni functions, sport events, a performing arts series, fine art, lectures, workshops and small conferences. They also hold annual events such as the Founders Day Corn Roast and Hawaiian Luau.

Forest Grove has two large institutions, Pacific University and Merix Company and one sector –Assisted Living that generates a need to entertain clients, friends and family.

• McMenamins Grand Lodge. Part of the regional chain of lodges and restaurants. This former Masonic & Eastern Star property is a 77 guestroom resort rich with historic significance, restaurants, live music, a spa and charm—and on the edge of Oregon wine country. The Lodge’s two restaurants serve local and seasonal pub fare. Choose from distillery flights or signature cocktails; unwind with inventive beers and wines crafted from the very grapes and hops that characterize the Cascade region. The disc golf clubhouse, Pat's Corner, offers seasonal outdoor seating on the lawn where you can glimpse the course, and, in summer months, enjoy live music along with your drinks on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings.

• Viasystems Group, Inc. Circuit board manufacturer, Viasystems Group is the largest employer in Forest Grove. They are a global company, with facilities in Forest Grove, California and China. They operate 7 days a weeks. Their largest manufacturing facilities and headquarters are in Forest Grove. They employ 1,000 in Forest Grove.

• Assisted Living Care. On a per capita basis, Forest Grove has one of the highest concentrations of Assisted Living and Nursing Home Care in the . There are 8 major facilities in the City. They account for 700 residents in their facilities. These eldercare facilities do some group trips for a meal. More importantly, they attract visits from their children and relatives. When in town they seek local dining options for what are often short visits.
