The Case of Sesame Workshop
IPMN Conference Paper USING COMPLEX SUPPLY THEORY TO CREATE SUSTAINABLE PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS FOR SERVICE DELIVERY: THE CASE OF SESAME WORKSHOP Hillary Eason ABSTRACT This paper analyzes the potential uses of complex supply theory to create more finan- cially and institutionally sustainable partnerships in support of public-sector and non- profit service deliveries. It considers current work in the field of operations theory on optimizing supply chain efficiency by conceptualizing such chains as complex adaptive systems, and offers a theoretical framework that transposes these ideas to the public sector. This framework is then applied to two case studies of financially and organiza- tionally sustainable projects run by the nonprofit Sesame Workshop. This research is intended to contribute to the body of literature on the science of delivery by introducing the possibility of a new set of tools from the private sector that can aid practitioners in delivering services for as long as a project requires. Keywords - Complex Adaptive Systems, Partnership Management, Public-Private Part- nerships, Science of Delivery, Sustainability INTRODUCTION Financial and organizational sustainability is a major issue for development projects across sectors. Regardless of the quality or impact of an initiative, the heavy reliance of most programs on donor funding means that their existence is contingent on a variety of external factors – not least of which is the whims and desires of those providing finan- cial support. The rise of the nascent “science of delivery” provides us with an opportunity to critical- ly examine how such projects, once proven effective, can be sustainably implemented and supported over a long enough period to create permanent change. -

In the twentieth century, puppeteers began to explore puppetry’s capabilities, producing challenging and innovative theatrical work in a distinctly American style. Puppetry was given a stage as popular broadcasting content on the newly invented television. In this media environment, Jim Henson pioneered new techniques, becoming the most famous puppeteer in history. His success enabled him to serve his field as a spokesman and sponsor. In 1982, he established the Jim Henson Foundation, a non-profit organization to support puppetry artists. The Jim Henson Foundation is the only organization in the United States devoted to funding puppet theater and its mission reflects Jim Henson’s commitment to the community of artists who make American puppetry the vivid panorama it has become. Without the Foundation, puppetry in the United States would not be experiencing the explosion of creativity and exposure it currently enjoys. To present a picture of puppetry in the United States and Henson’s work, a brief history of puppetry in America as well as an in-depth scrutiny of Jim Henson’s career is provided. -

Nigerian Educators' Appropriation of Sesame Classroom Materials
Global early childhood policies 17 Localizing Play-Based Pedagogy: Nigerian Educators’ Appropriation of Sesame Classroom Materials Naomi A. Moland School of International Service, American University Abstract This article examines how international organizations promote play-based pedagogical approaches in early childhood settings around the world, and how local educators respond. As a case study, I investigated Sesame Workshop’s efforts to introduce play-based approaches in Nigerian classrooms. In addition to producing a Nigerian version of Sesame Street (called Sesame Square), Sesame Workshop trains educators in play-based approaches and has distributed alphabet flashcards, puppet kits, and storytelling games to more than 2,700 early childhood classrooms across Nigeria. These materials were intended to support Sesame Square’s messages, and to foster interactive, child-centered learning experiences. However, teachers often used the materials in ways that reflected more rote-based, teacher- centered approaches. Data was gathered through observations and interviews in 27 educational sites across Nigeria that use Sesame materials. Findings reveal that teachers’ resistance to play-based approaches was sometimes for structural reasons (e.g., large class sizes), and sometimes related to their knowledge and training (e.g., they were accustomed to drilling the alphabet). I argue that ideals about constructivist, play-based learning are being disseminated by international organizations—alongside contrasting formalistic pedagogical approaches—and that all approaches will shift as they are localized. I question if approaches that are considered universally developmentally appropriate are relevant in all settings, and explore how early childhood educators adapt global pedagogical trends to make sense in their classrooms. I call for international organizations to explore context-appropriate play-based approaches that develop educators’ capacities to help all children thrive, while also incorporating local cultural beliefs about childhood and teaching. -

The rhyming alphabet picture book is designed to delight and inform, acknowledging the BOARD OF TRUSTEES present and the history of our area. Two hundred copies were printed and bound (by the students themselves!) Mr. Kevin Botterbush, President and donated to schools and day care centers all over the area. We quickly found there was a demand for Mr. Peter Tassinari, Vice President more books, so we’re pleased to announce that there will be a second printing in time for the holidays! Background Sesame Workshop Bangladesh (SWB), the country office of Sesame Workshop, produces Sisimpur, the local version of world-famous kids’ television program Sesame Street in Bangladesh. Sisimpur has been made possible in Bangladesh with the generous support from USAID. The TV show has been airing since 2005 with a view to making early childhood education delightful and enjoyable for Bangladeshi kids. This program has been developed to address the educational needs of kids between the ages of 3 and 8. Along with the kids, parents, caregivers and teachers are involved in Sisimpur through different school and community-based intervention. SWB undertakes different school and community-based interventions to reinforce the messages aired through TV program. It develops and distributes school based educational materials, trains teachers, monitors classroom activities and provides technical assistance for using them in the classroom along with community engagement and outreach programs. Since its inception, Sisimpur has been a tremendous success in Bangladesh and within a very short time, it became the most famous television program for kids as well as their caregivers.
