    Global Governance, Poverty and Inequality In the first decade of the twenty-first century the world experienced a series of crises that have combined to exacerbate already profound conditions of global economic inequality and poverty in the world’s poorest countries. In 2007, the unsound lending practices that caused a collapse in the US housing market ushered in a broader economic crisis that reverberated throughout the global financial system. This economic shockwave had a global impact, triggering not just instability in other industrialized countries, but also in their developing counter- parts, also highlighting deficiencies in the current structures of global governance to protect the world’s poorest and most disadvantaged. In these times of crisis, it is important to question the capacity and the appropriateness of existing global governance approaches to address both poverty and inequality. This work seeks to critically evaluate the role of global governance mechanisms for dealing with these pressing issues. With a focus on both formal and informal governance mechan- isms, and drawing leading scholars together from a range of disciplines, this collection offers sharp analyses of the successes and failures of the global system in tackling the pressing problems of poverty and inequality. Historically, Trinidad's Carnival2 has served as a social barometer of sorts, registering the ethos, fantasies, ideals, and contests of the society, what Victor Turner (1986:41) has called the hopelessly intermingled indicative and subjunctive "moods" of a culture. In turn, Carnival has had a profound effect on the Self-conscious- ness and behavior of Trinidadians as a people. Each year, Carnival is known, and sometimes expected, to generate a controversy or highly con- tentious issue.     The XIV Adlith Brown Memorial Lecture Storm in a Teacup or Crisis in Jamaica's Financial Sector by Gladstone Bonnick Dr. Gladstone BOil/lick Gladstone Bonnick, a Jamaican national, has rendered outstanding services at a national, regional and international level. He started his academic career at the Roosevelt University, Chicago, graduating with a B.A. (Honours) in 1958. He then proceeded to the University of Chicago, where he graduated in 1962 with a Master's degree (M.A.) in Economics and Statistics. This was followed by a Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in Economics in 1965 trom the same University. During his studies in the United States, Dr. Bonnic~ was awarded the Marshall Field Fellowship in 1958 and the Frank Knight Fellowship in 1962 by the University of Chicago. His working life started with the Govemment of Jamaica in 1951 in The Administrator General's Office and continued in various positions including Director, Central Planning Unit; and Deputy Govemor, Bank of Jamaica. Dr. BOlU1ick left the region in 1978 to begin a career in the World Bank which spmU1ed a period of seventeen years. He left the Bank in 1995 as Principal Evaluation Officer in the Operations Evaluation Department. He retumed to the region in 1997 as a member of the Board of Directors of the Financial Sector Adjustment Company (FINSAC). He was appointed Executive Chainnan in JmlUary 1997 and held that position until February 1998 . For his outstanding service to his native country, Dr. BOlmick had the distinction of being made Commander of the Order of Distinction in 1998 by the Government ofJmnaica.

    PRESS RELEASE 2013 Independence Day Honours List His Excellency the Governor-General, Sir Elliott Fitzroy Belgrave, G.C.M.G., K.A., has consented to the announcement of National Honours on the occasion of the Forty-seventh Anniversary of the Independence of Barbados. The Barbados National Honours and Decorations system was instituted by Letters Patent dated July 25, 1980. The Letters Patent provide inter alia for the establishment of the Order of Barbados in which there are four (4) classes of awards: a) Knight or Dame of St. Andrew b) Companion of Honour of Barbados c) The Crown of Merit in two grades – the Gold and Silver d) The Barbados Service Award in two grades – the Star and Medal The Barbados Star of Gallantry, the Barbados Bravery Medal and the Services Medal of Honour were also instituted by Letters Patent dated July 25, 1980.
