Southwestern College was founded in 1885 by the Southwest Conference of Methodist Episco pal Church. It graduated its first class in 1889. SC is celebrating its 120th year in existence. SC earned its accreditation in 1917 from North Central Association of Schools and Colleges. In 195 most of the main administrative building (at that time called Richardson) burned, but the four pil lars that overlooked the Walnut Valley remained. With only three buildings at that point, one of which just burned and another condemned, the future of the college was very much in doubt. In June of 1950, the Central Conference of the United Methodist Church voted to continue the college and assure its future through "The Million Dollar Building Program." Richardson was rebuilt and christened as the now known Christy Administration Building.

One of the greatest mysteries of the history of Southwestern College is the 77 steps. They were built about the same time as Richardson Hall (now known as Christy Administration Building) around the early 1900s. They were first renovated in 1985 and then again this past year. The real question, however, is why 77 steps. When approached, many individuals and departments were stumped. Even former archivist, Jerry Wallace, could not explain such a number. Many ries were entertained, however. One such story was related to the alma mater, which happens to have 77 words to it. It can be concluded that in an effort to remember the alma mater each step was assigned a particular word for the graduates to recite as the approached the top. By far, the story that resurfaced the most was that it just happened to take 77 steps to reach the apex of t hill from the foot of the hill. So to this date, it will be maintained that the contractors of 1907 fou out that 77 approximately 14-inch steps reached the apex of the hill from the bottom. This is why there are 77 steps leading up to the front of the Christy Administration Building.

Saturday, August 21 brought about an early start for the freshmen of sc. Over 140 new freshmen participated in the 14th annual Freshman Workday, planned by Leadership Southwestern. The day is designed to bring men together in service with the Winfield community. The freshmen were divided up into different groups and assigned separate work sites. Each of the 18 work sites had many projects, including painting and gardening. After a long day of manual labor and a short rest period, the workday volunteers were treated to a banquet a Hawaiian theme. At the end of the day, new bonds of friendship had been built not only with fellow stUr1a,.. ~ but also with faculty volunteers and members of the Winfield community itself.

Among the builder floats, the egg toss at the Crazy Olympics, and blazing bonfire, Southwestern students had a busy week to make Homecoming 2004 a memorable one. With a theme of "A Builder Storm is Brewin", many events including the Dedication of the renovated 77 steps, the Athletic Hall of Fame Induction, where past athletes were noted for their outstanding athletic performances, Campus Beautification, the upper classman trying to put out the Builder Flame on the freshman, and the unforgetable Lawn Art that also helps beautify the campus; these activities helped keep the students in a Southwestern spirited mood. The Builders ended the week by crowning Tia Leach and Joe Wood Homecoming and Ugly Man and the Moundbuilder Football team beating the McPherson Bulldogs 24-14. Striking characters and imaginary worlds were created under the multi-talented theatre department. Heading department, Roger and Allyson Moon led the students to perform to the best of their abilities in acting, sing dancing in shows such as "The Wiz" and "Eagerheart." The efforts of those behind the scenes also did not go noticed as extraordinary stage design, lighting and costumes boasted the hard work of the production crew bers who spent countless nights slaving away on sets. Student Government Association, or SGA, gave students an opportunity to discuss current issues affecting Southwestern College. They met every Tuesday evening at 5:30 in the student lounge. Every week there was anywhere from two to four bills introduced, discussed, and voted on by the members. Many of the bills dealt with funding for other organizations' trips and fundraisers. Student Government is designed for any students that are interested in how a government works.

Students interested in television production can film and edit all their own work for SCTV. Now students with an in film can enjoy working in the fun environment of SCTV. Students get to learn about the inner workings of te'levision station. KSWC is a fun and energetic group who always gets laughs on the radio air waves. The station is on air Sunday through Friday from 3pm-12am and the variety of music played is as broad as the members themselves. Almost anyone on campus can find some type of music they will enjoy. Phi Sheeba Phi is an organization that supports the importance of sisterhood on Southwestern Campus. many people believe it, these girls are not an organization of African-American women that just get together hang out. With a very dedicated Sheeba, Chelsea Hampton, spending second semester to study at the Urban Center in Chicago, the girls stuck together, stayed strong and also helped out the Phi 54 Phi fraternity with nual Halloween Bash. They invited anyone and everyone interested in being a part of their organization to to join them. They model themselves after great Nubian Women such as Alice Walker, Harriet Tubman, Truth, and Mary McLeod Bethune. Between group holding the annual Winter Formal, Luau and numerous service projects for Southwestern and the Winfield , they figured out what the meaning of sisterhood is. Holding a rush in the fall as well as the spring and adding many new members to their organization, Phi Delta Theta was a very busy group this school year. They held their annual Casino night, which is always a popular event, and also held a fundraiser to auction off a T.V. at one of the home basketball games. The Phi Delts, as they are commonly called, held many activities for their rushes and the rest of the student body, like water in White P.E. and a barbeque in Wallingford lawn. The organizaton also helped the Beta Sigma Phi girls with annual Winter Formal, and actually had 2 members, Jonathan Leeper and Brian Nickerson get crowned King Prince.
