F Aces of Southwestern College the Moundbuilder 2004-2005 R F aces of Southwestern College The Moundbuilder 2004-2005 r Sarah Abu-Hasira Don Berg Ben Carden Zach Badie Brian Brazill Southwestern College was founded in 1885 by the Southwest Conference of Methodist Episco pal Church. It graduated its first class in 1889. SC is celebrating its 120th year in existence. SC earned its accreditation in 1917 from North Central Association of Schools and Colleges. In 195 most of the main administrative building (at that time called Richardson) burned, but the four pil lars that overlooked the Walnut Valley remained. With only three buildings at that point, one of which just burned and another condemned, the future of the college was very much in doubt. In June of 1950, the Central Kansas Conference of the United Methodist Church voted to continue the college and assure its future through "The Million Dollar Building Program." Richardson was rebuilt and christened as the now known Christy Administration Building. Right: Scott Stoughton plays catch with a teammate during football practice. (photo by Sarah Morton) 3 Mira Minner Dani McCaulley Lindsay Morgan Josh Melcher Eloy Mendoza One of the greatest mysteries of the history of Southwestern College is the 77 steps. They were built about the same time as Richardson Hall (now known as Christy Administration Building) around the early 1900s. They were first renovated in 1985 and then again this past year. The real question, however, is why 77 steps. When approached, many individuals and departments were stumped. Even former archivist, Jerry Wallace, could not explain such a number. Many ries were entertained, however. One such story was related to the alma mater, which happens to have 77 words to it. It can be concluded that in an effort to remember the alma mater each step was assigned a particular word for the graduates to recite as the approached the top. By far, the story that resurfaced the most was that it just happened to take 77 steps to reach the apex of t hill from the foot of the hill. So to this date, it will be maintained that the contractors of 1907 fou out that 77 approximately 14-inch steps reached the apex of the hill from the bottom. This is why there are 77 steps leading up to the front of the Christy Administration Building. Right: Danecia Williams and Levi Moreland hang out at Java Jinx.
