It also considers the Semi-Annual Statement on Monetary Policy released in May 2000. The report concentrates mainly on issues discussed in the May 2000 public hearing, which was one of the Committee's biannual meetings with the Governor of the Reserve Bank. These meetings are assuming a growing importance, as the role of the Bank and management of monetary policy takes on an increasing significance in the Australian economy. The Australian economy has now enjoyed nine consecutive years of growth and the stability of our monetary policy has been influential in continuing that growth trend. Nevertheless, the Committee has been concerned to see interest rates increased four times in six months. In undertaking this review of the Reserve Bank's operations, the Committee appreciates the assistance and cooperation given by the Bank’s staff. The Committee has once again been pleased with the level of professionalism demonstrated in their approach to the hearing and in the preparation and presentation of the Semi-Annual Statement for May 2000. The Committee also appreciates the briefings it received before the hearing from Mr Peter Osborne, Chief Economist with Merrill Lynch and Mr Barry Hughes, Chief Economist with Credit Suisse Asset Management. During the preparation of this report, the Committee and Secretariat were shocked and saddened to learn of the death of the Deputy Chair Greg Wilton. Each event is watched closely by the parliament, financial sector and community. 1.2 With the Central Bank’s management of monetary policy playing an ever more significant role in the management of the Australian economy, these appearances are not only closely observed nationally but are also of growing international interest. 1.3 The background to these appearances is an agreement between the Treasurer and the Governor on key aspects of Australia's monetary policy framework.1 The Reserve Bank's Semi-Annual Statements on Monetary Policy, together with the Bank's annual report and the Payments System Board annual report, form the basis for discussion. 1.4 The procedural basis for the Committee's work is House of Representative's standing order 324 (b) whereby annual reports within a committee's area of portfolio responsibility stand referred for any the inquiry the committee may wish to make. 1 Reserve Bank of Australia. The Sydney Morning Herald of 27 August 1925 reported the first speech given by a female Member of Parliament (hereafter MP) in New South Wales. In the Legislative Assembly on the previous day, Millicent Preston-Stanley, Nationalist Party Member for the Eastern Suburbs, created history. According to the Herald: ‘Miss Stanley proceeded to illumine the House with a few little shafts of humour. “For many years”, she said, “I have in this House looked down upon honourable members from above. And I have wondered how so many old women have managed to get here - not only to get here, but to stay here”. The Herald continued: ‘The House figuratively rocked with laughter. Miss Stanley hastened to explain herself. “I am referring”, she said amidst further laughter, “not to the physical age of the old gentlemen in question, but to their mental age, and to that obvious vacuity of mind which characterises the old gentlemen to whom I have referred”. Members obviously could not afford to manifest any deep sense of injury because of a woman’s banter. They laughed instead’. Preston-Stanley’s speech marks an important point in gender politics. It introduced female participation in the Twenty-seventh Parliament. It stands chronologically midway between the introduction of responsible government in the 1850s and the Fifty-first Parliament elected in March 1995.

Redistribution Gains parts of Boronia, Ferntree Gully and The Basin from La Trobe, reducing the Liberal margin from 8.6% to 7.6% History Aston was created in 1984. Its first member was Labor’s John Saunderson who held it until he was defeated in 1990 by the Liberal Party’s Peter Nugent and it has stayed in Liberal hands ever since. Nugent was MP until his death in 2001 and was succeeded at the by election by Chris Pearce (The Aston by-election has been regarded as the moment where John Howard turned around his electoral fortunes). Pearce was a parliamentary secretary in the last term of the Howard Government and was Shadow Financial Services Minister during Turnbull’s first stint as leader before being dumped by Abbott. He retired in 2010 and was succeeded by Alan Tudge. Candidates Alan Tudge- LIB: Before his election, Tudge worked for the Boston Consulting group before becoming an adviser on education and foreign policy for the Howard Government and, subsequently, running his own policy advisory firm. Tudge was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister before being promoted in 2015 by Malcolm Turnbull to the front bench as Minister for Human Services, he held this portfolio until December 2017 when he was made Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs. He is currently the Minister for Cities, having been appointed to this position when Scott Morrison became prime minister.

It is located on a 32-hectare site on Capital Hill in Canberra. In 2013 the Parliamentary Library published a chronology of events, Australia’s Parliament House—More Than 25 Years in the Making!, in recognition of the building’s 25th anniversary.
