KLJUČNE BESEDE Slovenija druga svetovna vojna domobranstvo organizacijski štab ABSTRACT The capitulation of Italy in September 1943 was a pivotal historic event for Slovenia as well as at the global level. The communist forces obtained large quantities of ammunition and arms, since the German army was only partially successful in disarming the Italian forces. Partisans joined the efforts against all the opponents of the revolution and internal conflicts spread from the Notranjska region to Gorenjska and Primorska in particular. It should be mentioned that the partisan army allowed unpunished withdrawal to the Italians even though they committed a series of war crimes against the Slovenian nation. Unhindered withdrawal of the Italian army was probably allowed also in order to facilitate the partisan forces to focus on their internal opponents, which is clearly evident from the destruction of the Slovenian Chetnik Troop in Grčarice and later the extermination of the core of anti-communist units concentrated in the Turjak castle at the time. The German invaders were forced to allow the establishment of Slovenian Home Guard, due to a lack if their own forces, which suited well the leading domestic political forces that were fiercely against the communism and revolution. This facilitated the fulfilment of numerous preconditions for a bloody battle showing certain elements of a true civil war. Pojem domobranstvo v večini izmed nas še vedno pušča občutke nedorečenosti, nenavadnosti in neraziskanosti. 1.3 PREDPOSTAVKE IN OMEJITVE V danem primeru problem predstavlja neraziskanost pojava slovenskega domobranstva, njegovega delovanja, sodelovanja z nemškim okupatorjem in tragične usode ob vrnitvi po zaključku druge svetovne vojne. chapter 1 Monuments, Mediatisation and Monuments, Mediatisation and Memory Politics. Memory Politics The Slovenian Post-socialist Memorial Landscape in Transit Oto Luthar (T)he only way that history could work is if we continue to think of it precisely as history, rather than as a policy of memory. Timothy Snyder Introduction As the (re)interpretation of the Second World War on Slovenian territory re- mains the focal point of the post-1991 Slovenian politics of the past, its mediati- sation, and the mediatisation of the socialist period, is continually perceived as the greatest “division in the Slovenian nation.”1 In this vein, the Slovenian nation is portrayed as a bipolar political entity or society in which, after a brief interlude of harmonious unity during the independence process, a cultural struggle between liberals and conservatives has reignited. One characteristic of such an interpretation is its deliberate disregard of historical analyses and its dismissal of the influential role played by the media and popular historiog- raphy. The latter has not only overshadowed historical research on the Second World War, but it has started to define national history in general, as well as having an influence on everyday political decisions: be they in regard to the role of women, migrants, homosexuals, or cultural heritage. Part of the populist understanding of the past also includes changes in the memorial landscape, which I previously brought to the fore in one of my first articles on this topic.2 Ever since then, the interpretation of the developments that unfolded in Slovenia during the Second World War has undergone radical 1 The term was first used by Tamara Griesser Pečar, the author of the following book with a similar title: Razdvojeni narod.

• Dear Colleagues, Dear Recipients of This Message, Please Find Enclosed
Dear colleagues, dear recipients of this message, Please find enclosed the English text prepared based on two constitutional complaints lodged against the judgement of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Slovenia. This judgment set aside the judgment pronounced at the Slovenian “Nuremberg Trial” in 1946 against the most notorious Slovenian collaborationist leader and antisemite, thus violating human dignity and other complainants’ rights. The complaints filed are practically identical. Therefore, the translation only brings the first one, to which the complainants who have filed the second one is added. The constitutional complaints were prepared by Dr Miha Hafner and the undersigned, in cooperation with Dr Ljubo Bavcon. The translation was done by Želja Cilenšek Bončina and Irena Šumi. Added to the complaint are two introductory notes by Prof. Dr Ljubo Bavcon and the undersigned that were penned specifically for the press conference held at the occasion of lodging of the complaints. The translation will be sent to complainant organizations (the Associations of the National Liberation Movement of Slovenia; the Jewish Community of Slovenia; the City Municipality of Ljubljana), to individual complainants and both attorneys who have filed the constitutional complaints, as well as to our colleagues and friends abroad – in particular to those who have expressed their indignation with setting aside of the judgment against General Leon Rupnik. I am kindly asking you, in the name, and on behalf of the complainants, to use all the channels at your disposal including posting on the web and publishing in the media to draw attention to the setting aside of the judgment, and to the fact that two extensive, well-substantiated complaints have been filed with the Constitutional Court.

  • Racial Legislation, Propaganda and Measures in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and in the German, Italian and Hungarian Occupational Zones in Slovenia During the WW II1
Racial legislation, propaganda and measures in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and in the German, Italian and Hungarian occupational zones in Slovenia during the WW II1 Yugoslav state was created in the wake of World War I from parts of the former Austro- Hungarian monarchy and of some lands that were in the 19th Century part of the Ottoman Empire. In 1929 King Alexander suspended the constitution and the parliament and proclaimed a royal dictatorship. In 1934 Croatian and Macedonian extremists organized the King’s assassination in Marseille. Polarized country with huge nationalistic quarrels and authoritarian regimes in the second half of the thirties was more and more under the influence of Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. Anti-Semite legislation was introduced, Concentration camp in Bileća for the opponents of the regime established and Parliament was dissolved at the end of thirties. The war in Yugoslavia began on April 6th 1941 with bombing Belgrade. Yugoslavia was quickly defeated, surrendering in Belgrade on April 17. The government fled into exile. When the Axis powers in April 1941 invaded Yugoslavia, Ustasha regime seized power in Croatia and “Independent Croatian State” under German and Italian control was set up. Other parts of Yugoslavia were divided among occupiers. In Slovenia all of three occupying forces wanted to include the occupied territories into their respective states permanently, extending their administration to the Slovenian territory and including it into their social order. • Participation, Role and Position of Slovenian Women in the World War II Resistance Movement
«Qualestoria» n. 2, dicembre 2015 Participation, Role and Position of Slovenian Women in the World War II Resistance Movement di Vida Deželak Barič Abstract ‒ Participation, Role and Position of Slovenian Women in the World War II Resistance Movement The following discussion focuses on the mass participation of women in the resistance move- ment during the occupation of Slovenia (1941-1945) and compares it with the women’s position in the anti-communist and collaborationist political camp in the context of the civil war, which took place in certain areas of Slovenian territory during the occupation. It analyses the aspects of the liberation struggle activities which women took part in. These activities included the activist fieldwork in the context of various organisations (Liberation Front of the Slovenian Nation, Slovenian Anti-fascist Women’s Association – a special women’s organisation), inclu- sion of women in the Partisan armed formations, intelligence operations, as well as cultural and educational activities. The discussion underlines the monopoly of the Communist Party, the transmissive role of the resistance organisation in the eyes of the communists, problems with the implementation of the equal position of women in the men’s world, as well as fatalities among women. Key words: Slovenia, resistance, women, partisan women, emancipation Parole chiave: Slovenia, resistenza, donne, donne partigiane, emancipazione The resistance and politicisation of women World War II had a substantial impact on the traditional gender roles in Slovenia. Under the influence of the dramatic situation brought about by the occupation in April 1941 and the functioning of the ideological mechanisms, at that time women in fact took a large step and entered the public space which had until then been in the almost exclu sive domain of the male half of the society however, this does not mean they were not present in the public sphere.

The article presents a basic overview of the war record of the chief of the supreme staff of the partisan army Arso Jovanović. Jovanović’s war biography is described in relation to three social groups in which he had oper- ated. The first social group was the piper clan, or the local Montenegrin context in which he was born and grew up. The other social group was the leadership of the Communist party of yugoslavia (KpJ) with which he coop- erated during the war. The third social group was the circle of Montenegrin generals of the yugoslav army (JA) which Jovanović belonged to until his unexplained death in the summer of 1948. This paper describes how all these groups were interlinked through Jovanović, how they affected each other creating the preconditions for the events of World War ii and the post-war period in yugoslavia. • The Roman Catholic Church and Clergy in the Nazi-Fascist Era on Slovenian Soil
Athens Journal of History - Volume 4, Issue 3 – Pages 227-252 The Roman Catholic Church and Clergy in the Nazi-Fascist Era on Slovenian Soil By Zorica Petrović The revisionism of the role the Catholic Church and collaborators had during World War II has been quite a typical approach in Slovenia, as one of the post-transition countries of the former Yugoslavia. With their own interpretation of the causes and consequences of pre-war, wartime and post-war events, the role of the Slovenian Home Guard and the Catholic clergy has been deliberately portrayed for years, as one of naivety and good intentions in the name of home, God, and religion. In relation to that, the aim of this paper is to point out some crucial facts, which are well documented and supported by recorded evidence. An insight into socio-political developments in the Slovenian territory, and the ideological background that conditioned the attitude of the official Church authorities towards representatives of the occupier is, therefore, essential. Also, the paper provides a closer look at the clergy’s attitude towards occupying forces and the National Liberation Forces in Slovenian regions, occupied by both the German and Italian agressor, given the time, space and social conditions. The conclusion addresses not only the process of reconciliation, but also the possibility of an alternative for a far more credible moral stance of the Church, in its attempt to be a key element of nation and state sovereignty in the eyes of the people and history in the long run. Introduction This paper discusses the role of the Slovenian Catholic church during World War II within all of its variables.

A special focus will be placed on the adoption of ideological constructions of the Organization of Yugoslav Nationalists and contemporary French veteran movements. The paper also sheds light on the complex relations between AFY, the 6 January regime and contemporary, ideologically related political groups, and on the role of ideological conceptions of AFY in the creation of the ideology of the Yugoslav National Movement Zbor. Keywords: Association of Fighters of Yugoslavia, Organization of Yugoslav Nationalists, integrationist Yugoslavism, clericalism, Yugoslav National Movement (YNM) Zbor. pon its inception in 1929 the Association of Fighters of Yugoslavia (AFY, Serbian BOJ) was at first sight one of many veteran/patriotic non-political organizations U established after the 6 January Manifesto in order to back the monarchical dictatorship regime and ensure support among the wider population. In contrast to the majority of these organizations, during its existence (1929–1935) and relying on the membership and ideological legacy of the Organization of Yugoslav Nationalists (OYN, Serbian ORJUNA), AFY managed to build a strong organizational structure, broaden its membership base and shape, to a greater or lesser extent, its ideological construct, connect itself with ideologically similar political groups and thus expand its influence outside the borders of the Drava Banovina (Slovenia).
