Fagley, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2009 This dissertation is a thematic exploration of bachelor figures and male bastards in literary works by Guy de Maupassant and André Gide. The coupling of Maupassant and Gide is appropriate for such an analysis, not only because of their mutual treatment of illegitimacy, but also because each writer represents a chronologically identifiable literary movement, Realism and Modernism, and each writes during contiguous moments of socio-legal changes particularly related to divorce law and women’s rights, which consequently have great influence on the legal destiny of illegitimate or “natural” children. Napoleon’s Civil Code of 1804 provides the legal (patriarchal) framework for the period of this study of illegitimacy, from about 1870 to 1925. The Civil Code saw numerous changes during this period. The Naquet Law of 1884, which reestablished limited legal divorce, represents the central socio-legal event of the turn of the century in matters of legitimacy, whereas the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and the First World War furnish chronological bookends for this dissertation. Besides through history, law, and sociology, this dissertation treats illegitimacy through the lens of various branches of gender theory, particularly the study of masculinities and a handful of other important critical theories, most importantly those of Michel Foucault, Eve Sedgwick and of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. iv Bachelors and bastards are two principal players in the representation of illegitimacy in Maupassant and Gide, but this study considers the theme of illegitimacy as extended beyond simple questions of legitimate versus illegitimate children. The male bastard is only one of the “counterfeit” characters examined in these authors’ fictional texts. This dissertation is divided into three parts which consider specific thematic elements of their “bastard narratives.” Part One frames the representation in fiction of bachelor figures and how they contribute to or the roles they play in instances of illegitimacy. Part Two springs from and develops the metaphor of the “counterfeit coin,” whether represented by a bastard son, an affected schoolboy, a false priest, or a pretentious littérateur. Finally, I thank my parents and dedicate this dissertation to my mother, the most authentic person I know. ix 1.0 INTRODUCTION “L’enfant naturel a en général les mêmes droits et les mêmes devoirs que l’enfant légitime dans ses rapports avec ses pères et mères… Il entre dans la famille de son auteur.” (Code civil, 1972, loi de 3 janvier) When the law of January 3, 1972 was passed in France, it assured the legal equality of legitimate and illegitimate children alike. This law expresses the juridical end of illegitimacy as a basis for the long-standing privation of inheritance, financial support, and basic needs, suffered by illegitimate children in France. Of present importance is the law’s reference to a child’s “author” (auteur). While the illegitimate child’s rights and duties are explained to be equal to that of a legitimate child, specifically in relation to both that child’s male and female relatives (“ses pères et ses mères”), the “family” to which the child belongs is specifically that of the child’s auteur, the father. With this consideration of the family as specifically that of the father, the importance of a person’s biological sexual identification remains capital for their role within the traditional family, even while the law provides for equality between legitimate and illegitimate children of unspecified gender.     The Dark Knight's War on Terrorism John Ip* I. INTRODUCTION Terrorism and counterterrorism have long been staple subjects of Hollywood films. This trend has only become more pronounced since the attacks of September 11, 2001, and the resulting increase in public concern and interest about these subjects.! In a short period of time, Hollywood action films and thrillers have come to reflect the cultural zeitgeist of the war on terrorism. 2 This essay discusses one of those films, Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight,3 as an allegorical story about post-9/11 counterterrorism. Being an allegory, the film is considerably subtler than legendary comic book creator Frank Miller's proposed story about Batman defending Gotham City from terrorist attacks by al Qaeda.4 Nevertheless, the parallels between the film's depiction of counterterrorism and the war on terrorism are unmistakable. While a blockbuster film is not the most obvious starting point for a discussion about the war on terrorism, it is nonetheless instructive to see what The Dark Knight, a piece of popular culture, has to say about law and justice in the context of post-9/11 terrorism and counterterrorism.5 Indeed, as scholars of law and popular culture such as Lawrence Friedman have argued, popular culture has something to tell us about society's norms: "In society, there are general ideas about right and wrong, about good and bad; these are templates out of which legal norms are cut, and they are also ingredients from which song- and script-writers craft their themes and plots."6 Faculty of Law, University of Auckland.

The character of Batman has developed into a symbol with relevant characteristics that develop and evolve with each new story and new author. The Batman canon has become so large and contains so many different audiences that it has become a franchise that can morph to fit any group of viewers/readers. Our understanding of Batman and the many readings of him gives us insight into ourselves as a culture in our particular place in history.

  • Bel-Ami” Is a Novel in Which the Reader Is Drawn by the Visual Appeal of the Colourful Descriptions
    Abstract Published in 1885, Maupassant’s “Bel-ami” is a novel in which the reader is drawn by the visual appeal of the colourful descriptions. Although the novel can be read as the story about the advance of a mediocre man to social and political prominence, this article will show that Maupassant uses a dual-voiced discourse and juxtaposes a recognizable 19th century Paris and his protagonist’s sexual exploits in order to call our attention to the duplicity of the Parisian th society during Belle-époque. In spite of his 19 century Paris: carefully assumed impartiality, we shall see that Shifting Norms and Ironic Maupassant’s style is marked by ironical Storytelling in Maupassant’s comments where apparently insignificant remarks reveal their implications as the “Bel-ami” narrative unfolds. Copyright © Marie-Anne Visoi In “Bel-ami”, Maupassant challenges the modern reader to reconstruct various aspects of 19th century Paris as they are revealed through descriptive scenes. As I propose to show, the consistent shift between an ironic narrator and the represented speech of the main character in this novel creates a dual-voiced discourse that enables us to have a clear view of the Parisian society of Maupassant’s time. The uniform simplicity and clarity of Maupassant’s style succeed in conveying his protagonist’s thoughts and feelings without breaking the illusion of fiction. As the reader gradually finds out through carefully sequenced descriptive detail, Duroy’s seductive power and provocative sensuality will enable him to change his destiny from a modest clerk working at Northern Railway to a millionaire who has learnt how to manipulate women in order to climb the social ladder.

    “JE ME NOMME THÉNARDIER”: THROUGH THE MELODRAMATIC MIRROR by AMY ELLEN LAWS (Under the Direction of Timothy Raser) ABSTRACT The name Thénardier has become a synonym for “evil” as a result of Victor Hugo’s melodramatic characterization of Monsieur and Madame Thénardier in Les Misérables. Describing these characters in exquisite detail and revealing nearly countless evil deeds, the reader is left wondering how a couple capable of such deplorable acts could ever find redemption in what seems like a state of absolute evil. Upon closer examination of the melodramatic genre and Hugo’s own insertions through the lines of his characters and his poetry, he reveals the answer. The reader must decide if any of the characters in his novel are absolutely good or evil, and whether, in the melodramatic world, absolutes are even required. After serving in the army during the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871), he studied with Gustave Flaubert for seven years and made writing his career. Although he also wrote poems, travel books, and several novel-length stories, Maupassant is primarily remembered for his more than 300 short stories, written in slightly more than ten years. His naturalistic and ironic treatment of human weaknesses in tightly structured stories won him a lasting place in literature. Mau- passant died of syphilis at age forty-three. She was one of those pretty and charming girls who are sometimes, as if by a mistake of destiny, born in a family of clerks. She had no dowry, no expectations, no means of being known, understood, loved, wedded by any rich and distinguished man; and she let herself be married to a little clerk at the Ministry of Public Instructions. She dressed plainly because she could not dress well, but she was as unhappy as though she had really fallen from her proper station, since with women there is neither caste nor rank: and beauty, grace, and charm act instead of family and birth. Natural fineness, instinct for what is elegant, suppleness of wit, are the sole hierarchy, and make from women of the people the equals of the very greatest ladies.

    SURVEILLANCE, SOCIAL ORDER, AND GENDERED SUBVERSIONS IN BATMAN COMICS, 1986-2011 by © Aidan Diamond (Thesis) submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master’s of Arts Department of English Memorial University of Newfoundland October 2017 St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador !ii ABSTRACT Batman is “the world’s most popular superhero.”1 An icon of American excep- tionalism, Batman has been featured in radio programmes, television shows, musicals, and more films than any other superhero since his 1939 comic book inception. While Batman has also been the subject of more scholarship than any other superhero, sustained scholarly inquiry of his vigilante infrastructures and their effects upon those Batman deems criminal is scarce; instead, critical readers prefer to interrogate his fascist under- tones. This thesis aims to ameliorate this lack of scholarship by interrogating Batman’s regulatory surveillance assemblage, particularly how it is negotiated and subverted by Barbara Gordon/Oracle and Selina Kyle/Catwoman. Using Foucault’s theories of crimi- nality, Lyon’s articulation of surveillance, Haraway’s cyborg hybridizations, Mulvey’s deconstruction of the gaze, and Butler’s and Tasker’s respective conceptualizations of gender, I argue that female characters problematize and complicate the otherwise unques- tioned authority of Batman’s surveillance assemblage in the 1986-2011 DC continuity. 1 “Batman Day Returns!” DC Comics. 14 June 2016, www.dccomics.com/blog/2016/06/14/batman-day- returns.
