Sadri ©2009 Chadia Louai ii ABSTRACT The Clash of Civilization thesis by Samuel Huntington and the claims of other scholars such as Bernard Lewis reinforced the impression in the West that the Arab world is a homogeneous and rigid entity ready to clash with other civilizations. In fact, some in the West argue that world civilizations have religious characteristics, for that reason the fundamental source of conflict in this new world will be primarily cultural and religious. However, other scholars argue that there is no single Islamic culture but rather multiple types of political Islam and different perception of it. -

International Journal of Innovation, Creativity and Change. www.ijicc.net Volume 13, Issue 5, 2020 Modernization and Resistance: Healing the Social Ills in Leila Aboulela’s Lyrics Alley aAli Abdullah Saaed Alfuady, bLecturer Ahmed Sa'ad Aziz (Ph.D.), cLecturer Suhaib Majeed Kadhem, a,b,cDepartment of English/College of Arts/ University of Al-Qadisiyah /Iraq, Email: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Following the postcolonial Sudanese writer, Tayeb Salih’s perspective in his famous novel, Season of Migration to the North (1969), Leila Aboulela exposes the binary identity that her characters gain it through migration and transportation. This paper examines the traditional resistance to modernity in Aboulela’s Lyrics Alley (2011). It investigates how Sudanese parochial norms resist the Western modernity and how to rejuvenate and modernize such tradition. As she attempts to create a real image of the Sudanese postcolonial situation, Aboulela shows out the deep- rooted norms of Sudan that set up a barrier between Sudanese tradition and Western modernity. Sudanese think of education as a shame for women and a waste of time for men. Education is considered “as being a great evil that come to them with the armies of occupation” (Tayeb Salih 1969: 19). The novel points out the feminist voice which strives to get her moral choice, her privacy and her personal freedom. It brings out the importance of education to narrow the gap between Sudan and the West that may help Sudanese cope with modern world. The paper critically questions women’s position in the conservative Sudanese family and the fragmented identity that fails to stand in front of the patriarchal hegemony. -
Ameen Rihani: the English Manuscripts and Universalism
Ameen F. Rihani: The English Manuscripts and Universalism In 1998 the Albert Ferris Rihani family donated to the Library of Congress facsimiles of the manuscripts of all of the English works and correspondence of pioneer Arab-American author Ameen F. Rihani (1876- 1940). The originals of these documents remain in the family museum in Freike, Lebanon. Since most scholars could not travel there to conduct research, an exception was made in Library policy that allowed the acquisition of copies while originals are extant. In the 1998 negotiations, Ramzi Rihani represented the family for this Gift to the Nation. Ameen Rihani’s papers are important to the nation’s memory. He was the first American of Arab heritage to devote himself to writing literature, to publish a novel in English, and the first Arab author to write English essays, poetry, novels, short stories, art critiques and travel chronicles. He is now the author of 32 books in English, published from 1911 to 2002, his publishing life being extended already by 62 years due to the editorial efforts of the Rihani family. His writings in English mark the beginning of a body of literature that is Arab in its concern, culture and characteristic, English in language, and American in spirit and platform. He published in the United States during the first three decades of this century in many major magazines and newspapers. According to University of Pennsylvania Professor of Arabic Roger Allen, Rihani and his fellow Arab immigrants were leaders in "the literary movement that was so crucial to the life and development of certain communities in the United States (especially Brooklyn, Cincinnati and Detroit) and also to the development of cultural and literary ties to the Middle East region."1 Rihani is recognized as the founder of Arab-American literature and the forerunner of ethnic American literature written by popular Middle Eastern writers. -

Nordic Journal of African Studies 17(4): 269–287 (2008) The Public, The Private and The Sphere in- between: Re-Reading Najib Mahfuz's Children of Our Quarter* AFIS AYINDE OLADOSU University of Ibadan, Nigeria “Sovereigns are rulers over people, but it is the learned who rule over the sovereign” -Abul ’Aswad ABSTRACT This paper is hinged on the following proposition: that in no other region in Africa are the arguments about the role of the artist in the “public” sphere more intense as is the case in North Africa; that the problematic of what constitutes the “public” sphere in North Africa is circumscribed by the struggle for and the contest over “power”, “status” and “authority”; that the attempt by North African writers particularly Najib Mahfuz (d. 2006) to mirror the socio- political and cultural fissures and contradictions in the public sphere usually lead to conflict not only over what constitutes the “public sphere” and who governs it, but equally on how the “private” and the sphere “in-between”-in its quintessential slippery and highly charged textures- could be reclaimed for the “public good”. In grappling with the foregoing the paper rereads Najib Mahfuz’s Awlād Hāratinā (Children of our Quarter 1959). In reading for “meaning” and the “meaning of meaning” in the novel the paper pays attention to the socio- political and cultural “codes” provided by Najib Mahfuz even as it searches for possible theoretical insights that the works of Arab-African and Euro-American writers including Ibn Qayyim, Abdul Qāhir al-Jurjānī, Edward Said, Michel Foucault and Benhabib could yield in an excursus which probes into how the trialetic of “power”, “status” and “authority” continues to shape the “public” the “private” and the sphere “in-between” of the Egyptian society. -

Though he worked with them, and even with I)errida in the symposium Deconstruction and Criticism (1979), "he has fre- quently and explicitly dissociated himself from deconstructionist principles and methods.''1) His critical approach resembles no one else's and may be unique: "Bloom is very much his own man, one of the most ideosyncratic critics writing today. "2) For 王~loom, the understanding of a literary work means not "seeking to understand any single poem as an entity",3) but seeking to understand it in the relation of other literary works. Major poets, he insists, should de丘ne the orlglnality of the works against the works of their poetic prede- cessors. American International Journal of Contemporary Research Vol. 5, No. 1; February 2015 An Exploration of the Rhetorical Devices in Leila Aboulela’s Novel “The Translator” Ms Enaam Hashim Albashir Teachers’ College Nile Valley University Sudan Dr. Ibrahim Mohamed Alfaki ELI, King Abdul-Aziz University Nile Valley University, Atbara, Sudan Jeddah, King Saudi Arabia Abstract This article attempts to explore Aboulela's literary style of writing through her novel The Translator. Leila Aboulela is an Egyptian-born Sudanese and British educated writer .The Translator is her first novel, published in 1999. The Translator is a story about a young Sudanese widow living in Scotland and her sprouting relationship with Islamic scholar Rae Isles. The research method adopted is a blend of narrative, rhetoric, and stylistic analyses. All these analytic techniques are from within the constructivism interpretive research paradigm. The analyses focus on the rhetorical devices which are used in the novel: The Translator. These devices are identified and discussed with examples from the novel. The findings indicate that: Aboulela’s style reflects rich vocabulary and an increasing flexibility of prose. Although the form of her writing is organized according to the formal patterns of prose , it has sense of rhythm , repetition and balance. These are not governed by a regularly sustained formal arrangement and the significant unit is the sentence. Keywords: Leila Aboulela, The Translator, rhetorical devices 1. The Politics of Legibility: Writing and Reading Contemporary Arab American Women’s Literature by Dana M. Olwan A thesis submitted to the Department of English In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (September, 2009) Copyright © Dana M. Olwan, 2009 Abstract This dissertation focuses on contemporary literature produced by Arab American women authors. My study utilizes the works of Diana Abu-Jaber, Mohja Kahf, Suheir Hammad, Naomi Shihab Nye, and Laila Halaby, to raise questions about the processes, methods, and practices of writing, publishing, and reading Arab American women’s literature. Influenced by developments in contemporary Arab American studies, postcolonial, and reception theories, this dissertation examines, from an interdisciplinary perspective, novels, poetry, prose, and online articles that these authors produced in the aftermath of the First Gulf War until today (1993-2007). A study of this literature, I argue, facilitates a more comprehensive understanding of the history of Arab American literature, its recent trends, and possible futures. Chapter Two focuses on the work of Diana Abu-Jaber, one of the most important Arab American women authors today. Tracing literary developments, shifts, and alterations in the author’s work, I argue that Abu-Jaber uses her writing to humanize Arab Americans for her predominantly western audiences. Focusing on what I see as shifts in the author’s political commitments and ideals, I analyze her large body of works in order to understand how they are influenced by the western publication industry, marketing strategies, reader demand, and literary fame. Chapter Three deals explicitly with the works of Mohja Kahf as I examine the author’s attempt to reconfigure Islam’s negative status in the United States by defying the politics of literary representation and challenging the restrictive cultural, racial, and religious boundaries of the Muslim ummah or community.
