José López Pinillos and the Early Spanish Social Theater: the Theme of Caciquismo in El Pantano , Esclavitud , and La Tierra
JOSÉ LÓPEZ PINILLOS AND THE EARLY SPANISH SOCIAL THEATER: THE THEME OF CACIQUISMO IN EL PANTANO , ESCLAVITUD , AND LA TIERRA MARTHA ALEXANDER A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Romance Languages (Spanish) Chapel Hill 2010 Approved by: Dr. José M. Polo de Bernabé Dr. Frank A. Domínguez Dr. Carmen Hsu Dr. Larry King Dr. Adam Versènyi ©2010 Martha Alexander ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT MARTHA ALEXANDER: José López Pinillos and the Early Spanish Social Theater: The Theme of Caciquismo in El pantano , Esclavitud , and La tierra (Under the direction of José M. Polo de Bernabé) This dissertation studies three plays by pre-Civil War Spanish playwright, José López Pinillos, that deal with caciquismo : El pantano (1913); Esclavitud (1918), and La tierra (1921). This study considers these plays through the lens of Naturalism, melodrama, the honor play, and the grotesque to show how he harnessed these popular theatrical conventions and the grotesque aesthetic to communicate his condemnation of caciquismo as a national problem and a practice that is unjust toward the economically disadvantaged and as the root of Andalusia’s social problems of his time. The first part provides the context for these social plays by López Pinillos. It describes his life and times, his career as journalist, the popular theatrical conventions of his period, plus his own involvement with these and his penchant for the grotesque. Subsequent chapters discuss each of the selected plays. The chapter on El pantano discusses how, through Naturalism and the grotesque, this play shows caciquismo as a backward practice that has made rural Andalusia into an environment that is harmful to its inhabitants. -

387686 Thesis Estefania Final
HERITAGE OR CRUELTY? THE CONFLICT OF VALUES AMONG SUPPORTERS AND PROTESTERS OF BULLFIGHTING TRADITIONS Estefanía Duque Cardona Supervisors: Anastasia Gotovou & Carsten Jacob Humlebæk MSc in Social Science in Service Management Minor in European Business Studies Pages: 78 Number or characters (including spaces): 158.854 Copenhagen Business School September 2017 ABSTRACT Bullfighting has always been a controversial topic in Spain. Spaniards either support it or repulse it, not many seem indifferent when being asked about their opinion about bullfighting traditions. However, little is known about the reasoning behind the attitudes towards bullfighting. This thesis aims to review some of the results of previous bullfighting studies and try to find out the underlying values in the Spaniards that support bullfighting or protest against it. For this purpose, I used a survey as a quantitative method, which included open questions that served as qualitative data. It was elaborated after the literature review of different social psychology theories with particular emphasis on Schwartz´s Theory of Cultural Value Orientations, and it was distributed through social networks. 1640 Spaniards participated in the survey during the 35 days it was available online. By checking the survey distribution and analysing the data obtained with SPSS, I found out that: I) Spaniards with profiles in social networks against bullfighting were very active in sharing the survey and had a keen interest to prove that most Spanish people are against bullfighting. II) Women are more likely to be against bullfighting than men. III) Most Spaniards agree with the membership of Spain in the European Union, and some would be supportive of a European regulation of bullfighting events. -
Ritual and Contemporary Catalan Theater: the Work of La Fura Dels Baus
Journal of Catalan Studies 2015/2016 Ritual and contemporary Catalan theater: the work of La Fura dels Baus Duri Long Goergia Institute of Technology Introduction One only has to witness a few hours of La Mercè in Barcelona to experience the inherent theatricality involved in traditional Catalan rituals. From the pyrotechnics and demonic costumes in the correfoc to the enormous papier-mâché masks in the xambanga de gegants, performance is central to many Catalan festivities. Although there is a well-developed body of literature discussing contemporary Catalan theater (George & London 1996; Feldman 2009) as well as literature discussing traditional Catalan rituals (Hernández 2005; Noyes 2003) there is little that explores more than a surface level relationship between these two genres of performance. This essay will investigate this connection by identifying key thematic and symbolic elements that are present in Catalan rituals and examining how these elements have influenced theater in the period following the end of Franco’s regime. Focusing on elements such as non-verbal theatrical devices, motifs of teamwork and social union, and the use of theatrical catharsis, this essay will look at the work of Catalan theater company La Fura dels Baus in order to explore the presence of Catalan ritual in their work and investigate some of the possible implications of this presence on Catalan cultural identity. Catalan Identity From a theatrical point of view – and from the narrow perspective allowed by this focus – the main concern in this area relates not exclusively to history or politics but to the notion of civic or cultural national consciousness. -
