During that period he established an opera school, much expanded the area of early-childhood music-education and, most notoriously, in 928 established the world’s irst academic class in jazz studies, a decision which unleashed a storm of controversy and protest from nationalist and fascist quarters. But Sekles was also a composer, a very good one whose music is imbued with a considerable dose of the unexpected; it is traditional without being derivative.     1 JOSEF SCHELB: CHAMBER MUSIC WITH CLARINET by Hartmut Becker Te composer and pianist Josef Schelb is one of the most important creative musicians from south-western Germany in the early to mid-twentieth century. Unlike the older Julius Weismann (1879–1950), who came from the same area of southern Baden, Schelb belonged to the generation of Frank Martin, Prokofev, Honegger, Milhaud and Hindemith. All were raised in conservative traditions; no sooner had they completed their studies than they experienced the cataclysmic cultural collapse that was the First World War. It is easier to understand Josef Schelb’s intellectual origins and creative activities if one considers the context and the events in his musical training. Josef Schelb was born on 14 March 1894, the son of a spa doctor in the tranquil watering place of Bad Krozingen. Te young Josef’s musical talent developed very early and at such a rate that while he was a pupil at the Bertold Gymnasium in Freiburg, no suitable teacher could be found for him locally. His parents therefore decided that he should pay regular visits to Basle, where he could be taught to an appropriate standard by the director of the city conservatoire, Hans Huber (1852– 1921), who himself had trained as a pianist and composer under Carl Reinecke at the Leipzig Conservatoire. Under Huber the young Josef reached the point where, afer gaining his Abitur in Freiburg in 1913, he felt equipped for the life of a professional musician. Schelb chose to study in the French-Swiss city of Geneva. Franz Liszt’s last important pupil, Bernhard Stavenhagen (1862–1914), had been active there since 1907.

After this discovery, musicologists have turned their attention to Rott’s life and music. This thesis discusses the key musicological publications after 1980 on the subject of Rott’s life and music, specifically in relation to Mahler. Chapter 1 presents the theoretical framework and introduces the concept of the ‘great composer’ as described by Jim Samson. Further, it discusses how musicologists in general have addressed Rott and his relationship with Mahler, and addresses shortly the musical fragments that Mahler borrowed from Rott’s symphony. Chapter 2 turns to a case study.     HANS ROS BAUD: A DISCOGRAPHY by Les lie Gerber Hans Rosbaud was born in Graz, Austria, on July 22, 1895. His major studies were at the music conservatory of Frankfurt am Main. In 1929 be was appointed to his first major post, director of the Mainz School of Music. He left the following year to become conductor-in-chief of Radio Frankfurt. During World War II he was musical director of the city of Strasbourg. In 1945 he became conductor of the Munich Philharmonic. Rosbaud's most important appointment was made in 1948, when he was picked to reorganize and conduct the orchestra which became the Southwest German Radio Orchestra of Baden-Baden. Although devoting him­ self to other projects as well, Rosbaud's main interest seems to have been the Baden-Baden orchestra, of which he remained director until his death. In 1952 he be­ came conductor of the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra, and in 1958 was made chief conductor of the Zurich Stadt­ theater. Other activities of Rosbaud's last years were his appearances at the Aix-en-Provence Festival and at the Donaueschinger Musiktage. He died in Lugano, Switzerland, on December 29, 1962. The essay contains a brief treatment of Rott’s major work, the symphony in E Major and discusses how the history of music would have changed, had he lived longer. [1] What music has lost in him is unmeasurable. His first symphony soars to the heights of such genius as to make him the founder of the new symphony as I know it. (Mahler on Rott) [1a] You will not find a finer young man or a better musician (Bruckner on Rott) [1b] Every once in a while, a name is resurrected from the forgotten shrouds of musical history which has remained there unjustly, giving rise to an exciting new field of research. One of these is Viennese-born composer Hans Rott, who lived from 1858–1884. He was a favourite student of Bruckner as well as one of the major influences on his friend and contemporary Gustav Mahler. [1c] This past summer, I was in Vienna, together with Bob Freeman and Patricia Hall, both from the music department of UCSB. We found ourselves sitting in a little café, somewhere behind the Spanish riding school. Bob expertly ordered the most delightful pastries from the menu as he informed me that I was in shock, and needed something to get me on my feet again, preferably something with plenty of cream on top.
