    ABSTRACT The Contribution of John Lounsbury to the Development of the Middle School Movement in American Education: An Oral History Sheila Rogers Gloer Committee Chairperson: Betty J. Conaway John H. Lounsbury is considered to be one of the founders of the middle school movement. His career began in the 1940’s as a junior high school teacher. He later became one of the key leaders in the junior high reform movement and subsequently, a leader in the middle school movement. Although Lounsbury retired from his position as professor and dean of the School of Education at Georgia College and State University two decades ago, he is still actively involved in the National Middle School Association and is the senior publications editor for the organization. This dissertation describes his career and his contributions to the middle school movement and his understanding of key philosophical underpinnings. The dissertation also analyzes the impact of Lounsbury’s work in molding the movement and how his work impacted other key leaders. Oral interview was the selected venue for this research because the interview process allowed for Lounsbury’s own interpretation of events which he experienced. Interviews with Lounsbury were conducted in 2005 and 2006. They were transcribed and analyzed along with interviews of twelve key leaders in the middle school movement as well as interviews of Lounsbury’s wife, Elizabeth Lounsbury, his executive assistant, Mary Mitchell, and high school best friend, Tom Rogers. The following four research questions were employed in each interview: 1) What led Lounsbury and others to develop and promote the middle school philosophy? 2) What factors present in the 1950’s and 1960’s necessitated reform for the education of young adolescents? 3) What are essential elements for successful education of the middle level student? 4) What is the future of middle level education? The responses to these four questions by all interviewees were analyzed and then organized into key themes.

Demographic changes coupled with an ever-increasing cultural diversification within American society has resulted in the Black frontline worker and the client of color engaging in therapeutic dialogues that involve different cultural backgrounds, beliefs, values, practices, behaviors, and/or languages. These types of therapeutic dialogues are persistent features of any competent frontline worker’s approach to honing his or her craft. Therefore, in a society that is rapidly becoming more racially and culturally diverse, combined with the complexities of contemporary racism, racial prejudice, and/or cultural miscommunication, it is extremely important that Black frontline workers begin to understand how their perception of racial microaggressions and how they racially self- identify may influence their decision-making process during the intraracial therapeutic counseling relationship.

It was his purpose to publish and preserve the material, but unfortunately this purpose was not accomplished. He extended his research to the Netherlands and had made several visits there. A genealogist, recommended by the Archivist in the City of Utrecht, was engaged to trace the family, and succeeded in extending the line of descent to the great grandfather of Jan Pietersz van Deventer, the first American ancestor. The very thorough research made by Mr. Charles 0. Van­ devanter of the original records in all states where the early ramily had been located, has added materially to the value of this work. Much family data was supplied by various descend­ ant families. One of the first to undertake research, at a time when the subject was whol)y undeveloped, was Mr. Charles H. Van Deventer, of New York. Mr. James Thayer Van Deventer and three of his sons have contributed valuable records. Mr. Paul M. Chamberlain devoted considerable time to research.     Cecil County, Maryland Wills 1777-1810 Briefly abstracted by John W. McCoy © 2010 ([email protected]) Due to the importance of Cecil Co. as a jumping-off point for migrations into Virginia, the Carolinas, Ohio, Western Pennsylvania, etc., and also because we found so many contradictory statements about particular wills from this county, we decided to abstract the early will books, attempting to get all of the heirs, and all of the dates. With this information, the genealogist will be able to find the full text on the microfilms. We happened to start with the Family History Library microfilm that has books ―CC 3‖ to ―FF 6‖. The wills contain much additional information about slaves. Many are mentioned by name, and there are a few whose parents are named as well. We have not attempted to extract this information. Some of the wills express confusion about whether the testators were living in Chester Co., PA or Cecil Co., MD, because of the boundary disputes of that period. We only list locations when there is specific information. Some individuals are identified as Quakers in these records. This happens most often when they appear as witnesses who ―affirm‖ rather than ―swear‖ to the authenticity of a will. Original spellings are used (barring typographical errors in the abstracts!), but names are frequently spelled in different ways in the same record. Alternate spellings attested within a given probate are shown in parentheses. When we have guessed, through internal evidence or otherwise, the modern equivalent of a particular spelling, we show that in parentheses with an equal sign: Mevey (=McVey).

They were originally published under the title The New Haven Genealogical Magazine, and were consolidated and reprinted in eight volumes as as Families of Ancient New Haven (Rome, NY: Clarence D. Smith, Printer, 1923-1931; reprinted in three volumes with 1939 index Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1974). Their focus was upon the early families of that area, which are listed in alphabetical order. With a few exceptions this file begins with the ninth volume, when the magazine's title was changed to The American Genealogist and New Haven Genealogical Magazine and its scope was expanded. The title was shortened to The American Genealogist in 1937. The entries are listed by TAG volume. Each volume is preceded by the volume number and year(s) in boldface.

From vaudeville to the Broadway stage, actors have carved a niche for themselves in the theatrical landscape of the United States. Yet, little has specifically been written on the functionality of the primary theatrical actors’ association and union, Actors’ Equity Association. This dissertation examines the formation of the theatrical industry and the simultaneous development of Actors’ Equity Association as an institution within that industry. In doing so, the work makes connections between development of the industry and the role of Actors’ Equity Association on the field’s development. This interpretive historical inquiry sets the stage for the contemporary understanding of theatrical actors. The research is focused on unionism, the evolution of labor in the United States, the development of the theatrical industry, and the reactive and proactive behavior of Actors’ Equity Association. This case study investigates the development of a creative sector union and its role within an industry through three lenses: resource dependence, institutional isomorphism, and collective action.
