From vaudeville to the Broadway stage, actors have carved a niche for themselves in the theatrical landscape of the United States. Yet, little has specifically been written on the functionality of the primary theatrical actors’ association and union, Actors’ Equity Association. This dissertation examines the formation of the theatrical industry and the simultaneous development of Actors’ Equity Association as an institution within that industry. In doing so, the work makes connections between development of the industry and the role of Actors’ Equity Association on the field’s development. This interpretive historical inquiry sets the stage for the contemporary understanding of theatrical actors. The research is focused on unionism, the evolution of labor in the United States, the development of the theatrical industry, and the reactive and proactive behavior of Actors’ Equity Association. This case study investigates the development of a creative sector union and its role within an industry through three lenses: resource dependence, institutional isomorphism, and collective action. Each of the theories offers a different perspective for understanding Actors’ Equity Association and the theatrical industry in which it operates. It is argued ii the development of the theatrical industry is significantly linked to the collective action behavior of Actors’ Equity Association. Concurrently, resource dependence has helped shape Actors’ Equity as well as the larger theatrical field. Project labor agreements are unique to the construction industry. Unlike collective bargaining agreements between other industrial employers and their unions, collective bargaining agreements in the construction industry usually apply only to work performed by signatory contractors in specified counties or other well-defined geographic areas. Project labor agreements are even more specialized and focus on one particular construction project. They are often referred to as “prehire” agreements because they are usually negotiated between construction contractors and one or more building trade union in advance of submitting a bid for the project, and before anyone is actually hired to perform the work. The terms and conditions of a project labor agreement generally: (1) apply to all work performed on a specific project or at a specific location, (2) require recognition of the signatory union(s) as the exclusive bargaining representatives for covered workers, whether or not the workers are union members, (3) supersede all other collective bargaining agreements, (4) prohibit strikes and lockouts, (5) require hiring through union referral systems, (6) require all contractors and subcontractors to become signatory to the agreement, (7) establish standard work rules, hours and dispute resolution procedures and (8) establish wages and benefits.

    SONY CENTRE FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS Executive Summary to Staff Reports Outlining Strategic Plan & Budget for 2014-15 BACKGROUND: At its meeting of September 26, 2011, City Council considered the Core Service Review completed by KPMG and authorized the City Manager to issue a Request for Expression of Interest (“REOI”) to determine the options for sale, lease, operation or other arrangement in respect of the three major civic theatres, including the Sony Centre. The report can be found on pages 101-108: http://www.toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis/2011/ex/bgrd/backgroundfile-39626.pdf On September 29, 2011, the Mayor established a Task Force – Arts & Theatres. The Task Force examined the role that the civic theatres play in the city’s culture, economy and community. The Task Force recommended essential criteria for each of the three theatres for the REOI, along with other recommendations for consideration. An REOI was issued by the City in May 2012 to consider options for the future of the civic theatres, including the Sony Centre. The options were to include the sale, lease, operations or any other arrangements for any or all of the three theatres to meet the City’s cultural, social and economic goals. At its meeting held on November 27, 28 and 29, 2012 City Council adopted Item EX25.5 concerning the results of the REOI. At that time, City Council recognized the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts and the Toronto Centre for the Arts as community cultural assets and directed the Boards of these two theatres, in consultation with the General Manager, Economic Development and Culture, to develop long term strategic and five- year business plans that ensure creative, cost effective and sustainable operations, minimize the City's tax funding, include performance measures for its service to the community, and provide for operating and capital reserves.
