Monuments have been inscribed with new meanings, and acquisition and collecting policies have changed at existing museums to embrace a wider definition of culture. In addition, a series of new museums, often with a memorial purpose, has provided opportunities to acknowledge previously marginalized histories, and honor those who opposed apartheid, many of whom died in the Struggle. Lacking extensive collections, these museums have relied on innovative concepts, not only the use of audio-visual materials, but also the metaphoric deployment of sites and the architecture itself, to create affective audience experiences and recount South Africa’s tragic history under apartheid. DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH FACULTY OF ARTS AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY ZARIA, NIGERIA. 1998 vi ABSTRACT The rise of Shaka the Zulu and the Mfecane, the entrenchment and consolidation of the Boers in the region, and the Mineral Revolution and its consequences are the essential themes of 19th century South African history. These themes are developed within the context of various literary ideologies in the mass of creative writing that assess South Africa during the period. Critical works on the artistic efforts of the period dwell extensively on the pedigree of the novel, the various thematic thrusts, and the relationships and influences evident in the works. There is also a consideration of symbolism in a general sense. However, no work has been done on the significance of Nature and social symbols, and the evocative power these possess as beacons of social realities in South Africa of the 19th century. This is the thrust of this research which aims at focusing on Nature and Social symbolism to redress the uneven balance of previous scholarship, and to highlight the significance of symbols for purposes of historical reconstruction of the period The study consists of five chapters. The first chapter surveys details of 19th century South African history, and establishes the basis for the research. Chapter Two considers Shaka the Zulu and the Mfecane vii in Nada The Lily (1958) , ChaKa (1931) and Shaka Zulu (1955) Chapter Three examines the colonial intrusion which is reflected in King Solomon' Mines (1982) Allan Quatermain (1956) and Mhudi (1978). -

The series spans four volumes, an original graphic novel , and a spin-off trilogy of graphic novella. While the men fight, Mina comes face to face with Janni, who recognises her. The vicious gangster bosses of London's East End find themselves brought into contact with a counter-culture underground of mystical and medicated flower-children, or amoral pop-stars on the edge of psychological disintegration and developing a taste for Satanism. He recognises one of the men in his visions as paranormal detective Simon Iff , and the League go to a gentlemen's club Carnacki and Iff regularly attend to learn more about him. Moore was in too much hurry to finish. The sequence in which Janni Dakkar aka Pirate Jenny exacts her brutal revenge on the London docks is probably the best- executed in the book. -

Spain [email protected] ABSTRACT The music for the animation cinema is closely linked with the characters’ movement and the narrative action. This paper presents the Temporary Semiotic Units (TSU’s) proposed by Delalande, as a multimodal tool for the music analysis of the actions in cartoons, following the tradition of the Mickey Mousing. For this, a profile with the applicability of the nineteen TSU’s was applied to the fourteen Pixar movies produced between 1995-2013. The results allow us to state the convenience of the use of the TSU’s for the music comprehension in these films, especially in regard to the subject matter and the characterization of the characters and as a support to the visual narrative of this genre. When "Century" was announced, it was only natural to wonder which direction the series would end up in. While it's certainly pulled back from the rampant text pieces that overtook "The Black Dossier," it's no longer a plot-driven adventure story either. It has become a rather bleak meditation on heroism. It seems fitting, though, as the story is evolving past the era of literature that was driven by pulp stories and into the one of "finer" literature. This particular installment is clearly inspired by the opera work of Bertolt Brecht, specifically "The Threepenny Opera," whose songs this book adapts liberally. Mina Murray and Allan Quatermain are now immortal, and joined in their league by fellow immortal Orlando, currently male; the thief Raffles; and the psychic Carnacki. They are tasked with thwarting an apocalypse which Carnacki has foreseen, involving the mystic cult led by Oliver Haddo. They blunder through their investigations, uncovering little of value and potentially cluing Haddo himself into what he might specifically need to bring about this foretold apocalypse. -

Article Differing interpretations of reconciliation in South Africa: a discussion of the home for all campaign1 Sally Matthews [email protected] Abstract The theme of reconciliation remains an important one in South African politics. The issue of reconciliation was recently highlighted by South African Human Rights Commission chairperson, Jody Kollapen. According to Kollapen, in South Africa we have a problematic narrow interpretation of reconciliation, one that presents reconciliation and transformation as being in opposition to one another. This paper explores some of the debates about reconciliation as a process and then relates these to the Home for All Campaign. This Campaign was aimed at encouraging white South Africans to acknowledge the injustices of the past and to commit themselves to healing divisions and reducing inequalities in contemporary South Africa. It conceived of reconciliation as a process in which the onus is on white South Africans to take the initiative in reconciling with black South Africans. The Campaign received much publicity and provoked debate but never managed to gain the support of a significant number of white South Africans. In this paper, I explore the reasons for the Campaign’s failure to meet all of its objectives, relating this to contemporary South African discourse on reconciliation. I argue that the Campaign’s interpretation of reconciliation was valuable and necessary and that it remains imperative in South Africa that white South Africans critically reflect upon past and present privileges and take the initiative in processes of inter-racial reconciliation. More than fifteen years after the end of apartheid the topic of post-apartheid inter-racial reconciliation in South Africa remains pertinent. -

RECONCILIATION MONTH “United in Action Against Racism, Gender Based Violence and Other Intolerances” ”We must therefore act together as a united people, for national reconciliation, for nation building, for the birth of a new world We must therefore act together as a united people, for national reconciliation, for nation building, for the birth of a new world” Nelson Mandela BACKGROUND TO SOUTH SFRICA’S RECONCILIATION Day of Reconciliation, also called Day of the Vow, Day of the Covenant, or Dingane’s Day, public holiday observed in South Africa on December 16. The holiday originally commemorated the victory of the Voortrekkers (southern Africans of Dutch, German, or Huguenot descent who made the Great Trek) over the Zulus at the Battle of Blood River in 1838. Before the battle, the Voortrekkers had taken a vow that, if they succeeded in defeating the Zulus, they would build a church and observe the day as a religious holiday. The observance became known as Dingane’s Day (after the Zulu king Dingane), and in 1910 the day was established as a public holiday. In 1952 the ruling National Party passed the Public Holidays Act, which changed the holiday’s name to Day of the Covenant (later changed in 1980 to Day of the Vow) and formally declared the day a religious holiday. As a result, activities such as sports events and theatre performances were banned. The Day of Reconciliation is observed on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 in South Africa. The day gained additional significance in 1961, when the military wing of the African National Congress, Umkhonto we Sizwe (“Spear of the Nation”), chose the date to begin an armed conflict against the ruling government’s policy of apartheid. -

South Africa’s democratic transition, however, seemed to announce the death of the Afrikaans film. In 1998, the industry entered a nine-year slump during which not a single Afrikaans film was released on the commercial circuit. Yet, in 2007, the industry was revived and has been expanding rapidly ever since. This study is an attempt to explain the Afrikaans film industry’s recent success and also to consider some of its consequences. To do this, I situate the Afrikaans film industry within a larger – and equally flourishing – Afrikaans culture industry. -

Volume 10 Number 004 Anglo-Zulu War - I Lead: In the late 1870s faced with a British imperial ultimatum to disband their military system, the Zulu clans of Northeastern South Africa prepared for a war their leader was certain they would lose. Intro.: A Moment in Time with Dan Roberts. Content: The ancient tribal homeland of the Zulu lies north of the Tugela River in the northeastern part of South Africa’s Natal Province. The Zulu are a Bantu-speaking people, part of the Nguni ethnic grouping and were a relatively unimportant clan until the early decades of the 1800s. At that time there came to the throne one of the significant military thinkers in world history. Shaka (Chaka) subdued his family rivals and united the Zulu clans under his leadership. He then began to re- organize the Zulu war apparatus. He modified the traditional tribal weapon, the assegai, creating a new short iron sword designed for close in combat, he shaped his army into regiments, housed them in barracks for most of the year, refused to allow them to wear shoes so as to toughen their feet, thus increasing their speed, and then developed new unified flanking tactics directed by hand signals which when perfected overwhelmed his African enemies and gave the Zulu preeminence in the region. Shaka’s assassination in 1828 by his brothers Dingaan (din gane) and Mpande did not diminish Zulu power they were nearly everywhere triumphant until defeated by the Africaaners at the Battle of Blood River in 1838 and weakened by civil war in 1856.
