  • MTO 23.2: Lafrance, Finding Love in Hopeless Places
Finding Love in Hopeless Places: Complex Relationality and Impossible Heterosexuality in Popular Music Videos by Pink and Rihanna Marc Lafrance and Lori Burns KEYWORDS: Pink, Rihanna, music video, popular music, cross-domain analysis, relationality, heterosexuality, liquid love ABSTRACT: This paper presents an interpretive approach to music video analysis that engages with critical scholarship in the areas of popular music studies, gender studies and cultural studies. Two key examples—Pink’s pop video “Try” and Rihanna’s electropop video “We Found Love”—allow us to examine representations of complex human relationality and the paradoxical challenges of heterosexuality in late modernity. We explore Zygmunt Bauman’s notion of “liquid love” in connection with the selected videos. A model for the analysis of lyrics, music, and images according to cross-domain parameters ( thematic, spatial & temporal, relational, and gestural ) facilitates the interpretation of the expressive content we consider. Our model has the potential to be applied to musical texts from the full range of musical genres and to shed light on a variety of social and cultural contexts at both the micro and macro levels. Received December 2016 Volume 23, Number 2, June 2017 Copyright © 2017 Society for Music Theory [1.1] This paper presents and applies an analytic model for interpreting representations of gender, sexuality, and relationality in the words, music, and images of popular music videos. To illustrate the relevance of our approach, we have selected two songs by mainstream female artists who offer compelling reflections on the nature of heterosexual love and the challenges it poses for both men and women.

Pop-star Beyoncé Gisele Knowles-Carter is an interesting case in the discussion of colorism because her career has expressed a rich intimacy to Southern Black cul- ture and female empowerment while also playing into tropes of the mulatta “fancy girl,” whose relative proximity to whiteness adheres social value within mainstream culture. Finding aesthetic and thematic parallels between Beyoncé’s recent project Lemonade (2016) and Julie Dash’s cult-classic film Daughters of the Dust (1991) I draw a critical connection between Yellow Mary Peazant and Beyoncé, the prodigal child and the licentious “post-racial,” pop-star to argue that while Lemonade may not present the same critique of exclusionary Black womanhood present within Daughters of the Dust, reactions to the Beyoncé’s visual album and the “Formation” music video inadvertently demonstrate the longevity of harmful colorist prejudices and the disparaging of Black female sexual and creative agency within the Black community.

  • Christina Aguilera
Christina Aguilera True to its title, Stripped, the audacious new RCA Records release from Christina Aguilera, strips away the last remnants of her previous teen idol persona and what’s left is as real as it gets. The sixteen new tracks that comprise Stripped, including her sensational debut single, "Dirrty," showcases an unadorned, unfettered and fearlessly outspoken artist who has liberated herself, her soul and her music on an album that is as much a declaration of independence as it is a convincing demonstration of her fierce and original talent. Simply put, this is the real deal. "When you’re seventeen years old, green and inexperienced, you’re grateful for any guidance and direction you can get." Says Christina on her rocket sled ride to the top following the 1999 release of her eponymously-titled debut album, with its string of consecutive chart toppers, including "Genie In A Bottle" and "What A Girl Wants." It was a feat she would repeat the following year with Mi Reflejo, the smash Spanish language version of her debut, followed by her hit holiday release, My Kind Of Christmas. Ten million plus albums, a Grammy win for Best New Artist and a marathon round of world touring later, Christina began to fearlessly break free from the mass media mask that hid her true self, and the full scope of her talent. "I felt trapped," she admits. "I was under the thumb of people who were mostly interested in keeping me doing exactly the same thing. But I’m not blaming anyone," she’s quick to add.

  • Charles Armstrong 24 October 2012 Linguistics Research Thesis Advisor: Prof
Charles Armstrong 24 October 2012 Linguistics Research Thesis Advisor: Prof. Aaron Dinkin Vox Evocative: Pinpointing a possible sociological strategy for the typing of the phonatory and articulatory features of a singing genre Introduction The human singing voice. Discrepancies in the quantification and description of the work of our vocal cords offer a seemingly eternal source of academic discord. Despite the ubiquity of familiarity with singing voices, scientists and listeners alike seem to still perpetuate these massive discrepancies over the shared experience of listening to singing voices. One might expect a phenomenon almost as accessible as observing the blueness of the sky to have a consensual academic explanation. However, despite the amount of attention paid to the phenomenon of human singing by scientists and listeners around the world, much discordance and attention remains over how to describe and quantify this experience. Maybe this aforementioned academic conflict over quantitative and qualitative evaluations of the singing voice owes to the sheer acoustic diversity of human singing voices. If singing voices and styles were more homogenous objective entities, maybe the work of voice scientists and critical listeners would be simpler. Works of science fiction, even popular cartoons like Dexter's Laboratory and Family Guy, beg the comparison of voice scans to fingerprints. Just like the right voice evokes a response in these fictitious scanning machines, certain vocal qualities tend to evoke certain evaluations by humans. The ubiquity of references such as the ones from the described cartoons makes a case for the existence of a common latent acceptance of the unique and evocative qualities of the human voice.
