Dass wir uns nicht falsch verstehen: Punk war zweifelsohne wichtig in der Geschichte der Jugendkulturen, und ist es nach wie vor – als Tape im Auto, kecker Modetipp und Zutat für die individuelle Charakterbildung. Und zumindest weißen Mittelstandsjungs kann in ihrer adoleszenten Sinnsuche kaum Besseres passieren, als mit dem Geschepper anderer wenig älterer weißer Mittelstandsjungs in Kontakt zu kommen. Allein, als Sprachrohr der Kritik an gesellschaftlichen Missständen dient Punk – seien wir ehrlich – schon lange nicht mehr. So wie die Popkultur generell seit einer Weile unfähig scheint, relevante Kommentatoren des Status quo hervorzubringen. Entweder äußern sich die Künstler auf banale Weise oder sie wissen schlicht nicht, wovon sie sprechen. Umso begrüßenswerter, wenn sie mal wieder auftaucht, die musikalische outsider art, die in abgehängten, miefigen Vorstädten so etwas wie ein – wenn auch mieses – Lebensgefühl treffend vertont. Sleaford Mods tun so etwas. Angefangen haben sie vor wenigen Jahren im drögen Großraum Nottingham. Mit einer handvoll CD-Rs und Veröffentlichungen auf Kleinstlabels sind sie bisher glücklicherweise nicht von der Musikindustrie vereinnahmt worden und bewegen sich bewusst in den Überresten der britischen und nun erstmals auch kontinentaleuropäischen DIY-Strukturen. Sleaford Mods, benannt nach einem Nachbarkaff, aus dem die beiden Bandmitglieder nicht kommen, und einer britischen Subkultur, der sie längst nicht mehr angehören, fabrizieren nichts Spektakuläres.

Sein Partner, der Multiinstrumentalist Andrew Fearn, legt minimalistische Beats und krachende Bassläufe darunter und versetzt das Konglomerat mit einigen Soundeffekten. Mehr braucht es nicht, um eine extrem pessimistische Zustandsbeschreibung von England zu geben. Das hat lange Tradition auf der Insel, denn seit Churchill bis Thatcher und Blair und Cameron lag und liegt doch immer noch vieles oder, wenn man den Sleaford Mods folgt, alles im Argen. Irgendwo zwischen Mod-Kultur und Wu-Tang Clan liegen die Wurzeln dieses Duos, das sich als Punk definiert und behauptet, es interessiere sich im Großen und Ganzen für gar nichts. Im vergangenen Jahr hatten Sleaford Mods nach vielen Jahren mit ihrem Album „Key Markets“ endlich auch den Charterfolg, der ihnen zusteht, denn die enttäuschte Jugend Großbritanniens hat längst erkannt, wer ihre Stimme in Wahrheit vertritt.     Southwell Minster Friends talk 17th June 2017 Peter Day Good morning everyone. Thank you very much indeed for asking me to be here today. I’m on an assignment from Canon Coates; he thought I might talk about this part of the world--The East Midlands-- as seen from my perspective as a long-established reporter for the BBC. We’ve called it “From our ex correspondent” because that’s exactly what it is: I stopped working for BBC News at the end of last summer, and thus for me thinking about the past is almost inevitable. And my past is bound up with the East Midlands, because it is where I spent most of the first 17 years of my life, which I’ll explain in a moment. Now, most of my more than 40 years at the BBC was taken up with reporting business and financial news, something which I am not particularly going to do here today. Radio is a wonderful medium to work in. You don’t have to dress up for it. Radio is quick and easy to do compared with the cumbersomeness of television or the elaborate teamwork of print journalism. Many years ago, the late Alistair Cooke described radio—in a speech to the American Medical Association—as “a modest kind of literature for the blind.” And he went on to describe a process very similar to the way we tried to make radio programmes about business: “I go to the men at the top,” he said, and—alas-- they still are predominantly men—“I go to the men at the top, and ask the questions a child would ask.” In fact, the trick of it is not to ask childlike questions, but to ask the question the listener would ask if he or she were there in person..particularly the supplementary questions, which is where it gets interesting..that interaction with the imagined listener on your shoulder, like a pet monkey.

    Highlights 2014 – Dan Fox DECEMBER 17, by Dan Fox 2014 As far as disgraceful social injustice and disgusting political corruption go, 2014 was a vintage year. So for me, two of the most significant works made by artists in 2014 were not artworks. The first of these, Laura Poitras’s film CITIZENFOUR, is an astonishing historical document, recording the days and weeks during which Edward Snowden’s revelations about electronic government surveillance became one of the defining political stories of our age. Whether or not CITIZENFOUR is a ‘good’ documentary in the aesthetic sense is neither here nor there. Since the film’s release in October, I’ve had numerous arguments with people who think that Poitras could have ‘done more’ with her footage. I think they are missing the point. (What do you want? A nine-channel HD video installation featuring the complexities of electronic surveillance explained through a Judson Church-influenced dance sequence, sound-tracked by Miley Cyrus, and accompanied by a collateral programme of talks and film screenings?) What CITIZENFOUR makes clear is how few documentary films actually record a story of global proportions unfolding in front of the director’s camera. Here is a subject that needs no embellishment, no artistic lace doilies. CITIZENFOUR will be seen in the future as an exceptional piece of primary historical evidence. I left the cinema stunned by the courage of those involved in breaking the story, and in the production of this film. Perhaps CITIZENFOUR felt all the more urgent because 2014 was a miserably grim year in world news, and Poitras’s film was just one particularly explicit expression of our frustration at the current shape of power.
