Representations of Rural England in Contemporary Folk Song
Representations of Rural England in Contemporary Folk Song Heather Skinner Institute of Place Management, UK [email protected] Purpose: This paper explores aural representations of the countryside and English rurality through the contemporary cultural product of folk song. Methodology: A textual analysis was undertaken of the sleeve notes and lyrics of Steve Knightley, songwriter and founder member of the folk/roots band Show of Hands. Findings: The concept of the rural idyll is thoroughly debunked in the majority of these lyrics. Many songs make specific reference to place, and these, in the main, focus on the historical and contemporary hardships of living in rural England, in many cases also making explicit reference to the historical or contemporary social issues deemed by the lyricist to be at the root of the problems faced by people living in English rural communities. Research limitations: This article analyses data obtained in lyrics of only one songwriter within only one music genre, but the artist is one of the most respected within the contemporary folk genre, and Show of Hands have won a number of prestigious nationally recognised folk awards. Originality/value: The extant literature contains little concerning aural representations of place identities through song. The contribution this paper makes is therefore in presenting a conceptual framework that shows how folk song, as a contemporary cultural product contributes to the construction and communication of rural place identities. Etnomusikologian vuosikirja, 30, 66-91. https://doi.org/10.23985/evk.69076 Noora Karjalainen IMAGINED, REMEMBERED, GENDERED: Narratives of cosy other in the media representations of female folk singers This article examines the ways in which contemporary folk singers Julie Fowlis (Scotland), Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh (Ireland), Emily Portman and Kate Rusby (England) are constructed in the media as what I call the ‘cosy other’. Discussed here in relation to these Western European artists, I argue that my concept of cosy otherness derives from the internal other that is both European and foreign (Bohlman 2000: 189–193; Gelbart 2007: 64; McKerrell 2016: 126; O’Flynn 2014: 238). Unlike the conventional definition of a post-colonial other and the concept of an internal other, the cosy other is not ominous, competing, or negative. Rather, it appears charming and unthreateningly different with singular cultural traits such as a performance language other than English, a discernible regional dialect, or a pronounced regionalism. The cultural baggage accumulated over time – for example the troubled history of both Ireland and Scotland with England – is wrapped up in cosiness, niceness and nostalgia. -

Along the way he supported the likes of The Feeling, Lotus Eaters and Bruce Foxton of The Jam. He’s influenced by a wide range of music, some favourites include, The Beatles, Big Star, Televison, and Buffalo Springfield. In 2014, after focusing on his songwriting craft, Richard went to Whitewood Studios between May and December 2014, to record his debut release, the Loaded Gun EP, which was recorded using some digital equipment, and an analogue tape machine. It was subsequently mastered at Abbey Road Studios, London. In June 2015, the record was released on CD, and digitally on iTunes, Spotify and Amazon. Loaded Gun, has already received national airplay and great praise from his fans. Dass wir uns nicht falsch verstehen: Punk war zweifelsohne wichtig in der Geschichte der Jugendkulturen, und ist es nach wie vor – als Tape im Auto, kecker Modetipp und Zutat für die individuelle Charakterbildung. Und zumindest weißen Mittelstandsjungs kann in ihrer adoleszenten Sinnsuche kaum Besseres passieren, als mit dem Geschepper anderer wenig älterer weißer Mittelstandsjungs in Kontakt zu kommen. Allein, als Sprachrohr der Kritik an gesellschaftlichen Missständen dient Punk – seien wir ehrlich – schon lange nicht mehr. So wie die Popkultur generell seit einer Weile unfähig scheint, relevante Kommentatoren des Status quo hervorzubringen. Entweder äußern sich die Künstler auf banale Weise oder sie wissen schlicht nicht, wovon sie sprechen. Umso begrüßenswerter, wenn sie mal wieder auftaucht, die musikalische outsider art, die in abgehängten, miefigen Vorstädten so etwas wie ein – wenn auch mieses – Lebensgefühl treffend vertont.
